Chapter 1099: Chapter 945: The Mystery of the Jinx Star_2
In fact, she suspected that the Counter-Intelligence Department had likely harbored doubts about Rob Lucci for quite some time, as his abilities provided him ample time to commit the crime at that time, and being the head of the highest operational department of Military Intelligence Section Seven, he also had a strong motive for the act.
Murder was in the style of Military Intelligence Section Seven; over the past decade or so, they had eliminated countless stumbling blocks for the United Government through similar means.
The epidemic in Oasis had exposed Rob Lucci’s true identity.
Lu Xiang had good reason to suspect that the Counter-Intelligence Department kept the case in the undeveloped stage merely for the sake of appearances.
Anyone with clear insight knew that this was the result of internal political struggles within The First Region, but given the particularly unique identity of the victim and the myriad of puzzles left behind, they had no choice but to adopt a delaying tactic—by leaving it unresolved, they didn’t have to officially announce the details to the entire United Government.
Lu Xiang, of course, had never thought of publicly exposing Song Lan in an open setting.
In fact, when everyone uses the phrase "Sir (Madam), you wouldn’t want to...", their true aim is not to denounce the other party but to coerce them into agreeing to their own terms of exchange.
Lu Xiang was well-versed in this tactic; there was nothing to it but practice.
She could no longer remember how many times she had used this sentence structure to make Song Lan agree to her demands.
"Once you understand the principle behind this, you can foresee the arrival of ’misfortune’."
This was the advantage of scientific rationalism, "Your Jinx Star constitution is due to the high overlap of your past actions and the pivot points of destiny, making many events seem caused by you. So now the question is, what would happen if you decided to use this trait to your advantage and intentionally avoid these pivot points?"
"The prison rebellion will still happen," blurted out Song Lan.
"That’s right, and without your presence, it will lead to even more irreversible damage."
All the recent signs in their work were subtly guiding them towards the most mysterious prison of the United Government, as if destiny had predetermined everything.
Even RT6 believed that this prison was very likely the source of "Overload Type IV," and the "Psychic Laboratory" that Vadim saw in his chaotic consciousness might not have been a hallucination but rather a remnant of consciousness tampering within the system.
The entire concept of the Overload system was an imitation of Song Lan’s abilities.
After generations of innovation, they had finally touched upon the essence.
This gave Lu Xiang plenty of reason to believe that an unprecedented rebellion in the prison was imminent.
"Lu Xiang, if your judgment is correct, then it’s time for us to reconsider a matter," Song Lan’s expression grew somber.
For some reason, he suddenly felt vindicated, "This suggests that the Jinx Star constitution is complete nonsense! Its real name should be Good Samaritan Constitution!"
Wherever a malignant incident occurred, the figure of a Good Samaritan was sure to be found.
This had always been the consensus among the people of Region Seventeen.
"There’s nothing wrong with having a Jinx Star constitution; it even sounds quite cute."
Despite unraveling the scientific secret behind it, Lu Xiang had no intention of correcting the name.
Good Samaritan Constitution was a mouthful and lacked character, whereas Jinx Star Constitution had such a distinctive ring to it; hmm, she definitely wasn’t holding a grudge over Song Lan’s smug tone on the phone.
She followed up with a reminder, "Come to the Counter-Intelligence Department tomorrow morning. After all, you’ve already clocked in three times this week, which is overachieving for you. I won’t call you when I leave tomorrow; you’re allowed to sleep in."
That night, out of consideration for Song Lan’s health and his condition for work the next day, Lu Xiang decided not to extend other evening entertainments.
Turning off the desk lamp and lying in bed, she couldn’t help but ponder another issue.
Wild Bone’s challenge, unsurprisingly, ended once again in failure. Like those before him who experienced a penetrating hand strike through the heart, his chest was pierced through, revealing a straight view of the landscape beyond.
But this was indeed the first time Song Lan had mentioned that someone could briefly touch the realm of time.
Although this seemed like an act of suicide, if it weren’t for his timely intervention pulling Wild Bone back, the latter might have been swept away by the currents of time on the very first day after factory repair, back to the distant Jurassic era.
Whether for military technology or the Review Meeting, with Song Lan’s involvement, they arrived at a result acceptable to both parties.
However, for Song Lan, it probably wasn’t the case.
This long-planned stab in the back was an adjustment targeting Song Lan’s abilities, allowing Wild Bone to indeed take one step ahead of everyone else. Vadim and Wild Bone were like two explorers cracking a secret that no one had ever touched before.
Song Lan’s abilities were invincible.
Lu Xiang, too, had come to a similar conclusion in his "Dumb Bird Observation Diary."
But this wasn’t a matter of sentimental admiration; it was a rational judgment made after fully understanding the details of Song Lan’s abilities. The "invincibility" referred to the state during the activation of Song Lan’s abilities.
The main reason no one had ever been able to harm him was that, at the moment of activation, Song Lan was already in a different space-time than them. Therefore, not even the Foster Family’s once steadfast belief that "creating an explosion that cut off all retreat, making it impossible for him to escape even when speeding up time" would be even remotely possible.
In fact, Song Lan didn’t need to run away at all. All he needed to do was stand still and activate his abilities, and even if a tactical nuclear bomb detonated in front of him, it would be separated by the space-time turbulence he spoke of.
Unless...
They could traverse the space-time turbulence and find Song Lan’s true location.
Although this sounded unbelievable, to ensure this low-probability event wouldn’t happen, Lu Xiang had always been keeping an eye on psychics worldwide using the Deep Web chips and the "Sea of Souls."
The only person she knew whose ability might be related to time was the current Chief Student of the Purple Wisteria Academy, whose psychic energy was still far too weak to pose a threat.
Lu Xiang had never anticipated that those to first touch this realm would not be psychics but some sort of mysterious cybernetic organism.
That was the main reason why, upon hearing the news, she immediately arranged the prison visit, where the "Overload Type IV" could very well have originated. Their goal was to find the source of "Overload Type IV" and the person who created it, nipping any potential threat in the bud.
This was a probe from their enemies, who, of course, did not place their hopes on a rehabilitated Wild Bone succeeding in an assassination attempt. He and Vadim were merely tools for gathering data.
The previous failure made the opponent much more cautious. They seemed to intend to unravel the secrets of Song Lan’s abilities slowly and silently, bit by bit.
The plethora of thoughts kept Lu Xiang awake all night. When sleepiness finally swept over her, the sky was already blush with the first light of dawn.
With less than two hours left before she had to report to the Counter-Intelligence Department, she didn’t even bother trying to sleep. Turning her head, she saw Song Lan, asleep and oblivious to the world.
The quality of this Dumb Bird’s sleep was always excellent. Despite so many events happening, he could still fall asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow, a trait Bai Zhu and Medea had openly envied more than once.
Couldn’t he feel a tinge of urgency?
Or, did Song Lan already have contingencies in place?
The scenes from The First Region were still vivid in her mind. Back then, Song Lan had used multiple tactics to make the Foster Family believe they had grasped his abilities, leading them to act rashly and exposing the Black Hand behind the psychic research institutions.
Was even the touching of the temporal realm within his plans?
"Song Lan..."
She called out to him softly.
Song Lan continued to sleep soundly, with no time to respond to her queries.
All she could confirm was that he wasn’t pretending to sleep.
