Chapter 1084: Chapter 938: Brand New from the Factory
"A new day, a new job,"
Early that morning, the H1 Department received a daunting mission related to combat, issued by military technology.
With Song Lan’s experience, when these keywords came together, nothing good ever happened.
However, other members of the H1 Department were eager to try; after reporting to H1 for a few days, they finally got their first substantial task.
Even though they enjoyed their daily ritual of sipping tea, chatting about fashion, and gossiping, the lack of endless work left them feeling somewhat uneasy, which made them realize that too much idling could also have its downsides.
Next door, Chief Eagle was relentless, bombarding Song Lan with eight phone calls early in the morning, showing more persistence than a debt collector. Song Lan had no doubt that had the relentless ringing not eventually woken him up, Chief Eagle would have kept on calling.
The conscientious Chief Eagle had also proved one thing to the members of H1 in practice—there was no such thing as not being able to reach the department head; if he wasn’t picking up, it only meant you hadn’t called enough.
"Boss, your hair,"
Seeing Song Lan yawning continuously as he took his seat, Jasmine hesitated for a long time before lowering her voice and pointing at the freshly sprouted "cowlick" on top of Song Lan’s head.
She suddenly realized that for beings of the "upper-world life-form" category, poor sleep and rushing out for work could result in sprouting a "cowlick" just like any ordinary working stiff.
As for the suit, it was impeccable, but combined with Song Lan squinting and yawning continuously, any mysterious aura he might have had evaporated, reverting him back to the image of an ordinary office worker.
As for the "Boss" title, it was an agreed-upon result, meeting Song Lan’s preference for the "Old" prefix while not being overly formal. Song Lan’s suggestion of "just call me Old Song" was unanimously rejected by everyone else.
Hog Foster pointed out that, although Song Lan himself preferred a more approachable image, he was still the head of the H1 Department, and that role deserved adequate respect.
And so, they all unwillingly obtained titles prefixed with "Old."
Rose protested several times to no avail, emphasizing to Song Lan that not all names suited the addition of "Old" for endearment—the chief stubbornly refused to consider any suggestions on this matter.
In one handover of work, the tragedy ultimately struck.
Rose would probably never forget Chief Eagle’s shocked expression upon hearing the nickname "Old Eagle," which made her suspect that the repeated calls Chief Eagle made to Song Lan were driven by personal vendetta.
"The representative from military technology has prepared the test site, and the special car should arrive at the United Government Security Bureau entrance in about ten minutes,"
Hog glanced at his schedule and said matter-of-factly.
Apart from the schedule and the hefty documents from his family, his desk also held a cup of hot tea.
The jasmine tea, known for its calming effects, had been shipped to him from a region famous for its jasmine tea by a friend of Yaku’s—it was said to be grown by hand without any technological assistance.
Ever since joining H1, Hog had changed his habit of guzzling coffee like water, smoothly transitioning to the health-conscious crowd.
Although it had only been a few days, he did feel much more relaxed in both mind and body.
"Before that, we need to have a short meeting,"
Song Lan said seriously, asking the soul-piercing question, "Why would military technology reach out to us? As far as I know, we shouldn’t have any business dealings with them, should we?"
It was now 6:31 a.m., a full two hours before his usual wake-up time.
Intuition told Song Lan that unless he resolved this issue fundamentally, more inexplicable tasks would be transferred to H1 in the future.
"Perhaps because... we’re too idle?"
Jasmine tentatively answered.
The fact that the H1 Department had nothing to do had long been public knowledge in the Security Bureau.
Rose added, "And the representative from military technology specifically requested the involvement of a Six Stars rescuer."
"No, that’s just superficial. The real question is, why does military technology know we’re idle? Haven’t I taught you? If anyone asks, we should say our work is substantial—conditioning our bodies, preparing for formidable foes; actively understanding international dynamics, collecting intelligence on enemies; studying the essence of the rescuer spirit..."
"Boss..."
The office atmosphere suddenly fell silent.
Rose, Yaku, and Jasmine exchanged looks; they knew they had no choice but to answer as a trio, the suddenly icy atmosphere presaging an outburst reminiscent of a dictator.
"They say..."
"They say we are Six Stars rescuers, which spiritual essence of rescuers are we supposed to be learning."
The title of a Six Stars rescuer itself represented the spirit of the United Government’s rescuers.
And there were three active six-star rescuers sitting right in this office.
Song Lan’s hand slightly trembled as it reached for his briefcase. He had to admit, this time he miscalculated. The universal excuse for slacking off hadn’t been updated to keep up with the times, leading to today’s predicament, proving the importance of keeping current.
