Chapter 107: Chapter 107: Reflection of the Future_1
At present, an act of illegitimate infringing was taking place in the East District.
The victim this time was a youth with a friendly face, riding a blue-grey bicycle.
The youth, pushing his bicycle, was cornered by several street thugs with ferocious expressions.
Faced with several thugs laughing menacingly at him, Song Lan could not help but lament that the East District deserved to be known as the most chaotic area of the Seventeen Districts. He was just cycling on the road, not bothering anyone, yet he was targeted.
"Kid, I feel annoyed just seeing you riding around on your bike."
The head of the thugs, holding a baseball bat, took a step forward. "Is this bike new? What would happen if I did this?"
He wildly waved his baseball bat, striking hard towards the handle of the MK-II.
In the next moment, the leader of the thugs felt his hand go numb. The recoil sent the baseball bat soaring a dozen meters away, landing on the ground with a crisp "clang."
He never expected an ordinary bicycle to be so resilient. His full-strength swing failed to do any damage to the bike.
Song Lan was not surprised by this. After all, the owner of the bicycle shop had assured him that even a Gatling gun wouldn’t pierce the defense of this bicycle.
Seeing that his swing had failed, the leader of the thugs predictably resorted to his usual tactic—rage.
He angrily grabbed Song Lan’s collar and said menacingly, "You don’t get cocky. This isn’t over yet!"
If he couldn’t hit the bicycle, he surely could hit the person riding it, right?
"5 seconds."
The calm Song Lan said while his collar was grabbed.
This was part of an experiment.
He spent an entire afternoon establishing that spiritual energy could not only control the behavior of passers-by but also greatly enhance their physical strength. So an octogenarian, reinforced with spiritual energy, could take down the leader of the street thugs without an issue.
And now, he had embarked on another street experiment.
"Huh? What did you say? You think I am—"
Regrettably, the thug leader couldn’t finish introducing himself before the five-second time limit had passed.
An empty bottle, tossed from afar, nailed him squarely in the forehead with a sound that was crispier than the sound of the baseball bat hitting the ground.
Before his followers could react, a beautiful figure clad in a maid’s outfit entered the battlefield. She gave the thugs little time to respond, each of her blows breaking the vulnerable part of their bodies.
Temple, throat, groin—all areas of vulnerability. The overconfident thugs hadn’t had the time to react before they all fell to the ground howling in pain, one after the other.
The reason Song Lan did not avoid these street thugs was that before he got surrounded, he had already foreseen the thug leader’s fate.
He ended up painfully collapsing onto the ground after an empty bottle hit him on the forehead.
This was the effect of integration of spiritual energy perception and ability. After probing for an entire afternoon, his ideas were finally realized.
But the downside was also quite obvious. With his current level of proficiency, he could only manage to see a single scene, for example, he saw the thug leader getting hit by the bottle, but he didn’t know who threw the bottle or why he would get hit in the head. Song Lan was clueless about these things.
The experiment merely proved that the predicted result would definitely happen.
『Mr. Chief, are you okay? (Penguin anxiety emoji)』
Valerian took out the tablet she carried with her, a worried look on her face.
For personal reasons, she had taken a day off, but she didn’t expect to encounter Song Lan surrounded by thugs during her day out. So, she immediately picked up a bottle from a nearby trash can and threw it at the leading thug.
"You arrived just in time; if you were any later, the consequences would be unthinkable!"
Song Lan said, still startled.
He had no idea that the person who threw the empty bottle was Valerian.
『My place is nearby, you can come over to rest for a while, Mr. Chief.』
Valerian extended an invitation.
『Actually, there are a few things I want to talk to you about.』
In fact, ever since the city-wide meeting concluded, and the mayor of Lyon City revealed the Foster Family’s crimes to the media, she had been torn.
Because after this incident ended, there was some additional good news for her.
Dorago Safron was dead.
This meant that she could return to her identity as Valerian. She no longer needed to hide her identity or pretend to be mute to avoid assassins. She wouldn’t need to use a tablet to express her thoughts.
Later that night, Lu Xiang privately asked for her opinion. As long as she agreed, the director would approve the transfer procedure and help her explain the entire incident to the leadership and colleagues of the crime investigation department, then she could return to her familiar life.
Becoming a proud law enforcer was Valerian’s childhood dream.
If she was asked a week ago, she might have readily agreed to return to the crime investigation department to continue her unfinished career. However, after experiencing the environment of the psychological counseling department, she hesitated.
She had never experienced such an environment before. Her interactions with Roger and Song Lan felt more like being with friends. In this three-person department, she felt a warmth she had never experienced before.
Life is indeed wonderful.
Actually, her first impression of Song Lan wasn’t good at all—when she asked him for help in the hospital via a note, he just betrayed her!
But after subsequent interactions, she realized that Song Lan was a good leader. Though he slacked off every day, when Roger was feeling low, it was him who came up with a series of plans to rescue the department that was on the brink of disbanding on the very first day.
Within less than ten minutes, Song Lan arrived at Valerian’s place.
A single-room apartment that looked to be less than fifty square meters surprised him with its tidiness, totally contradicting his image of Valerian guzzling vodka and throwing bottles around.
Valerian poured a glass of water for Song Lan and picked up her tablet.
『Actually, I’ve been keeping some things from you.』
Once seated, she kept rehearsing the words in her mind.
Song Lan had a rough idea why Valerian was stuttering. From the first day of the establishment of the psychological counseling department, he guessed her identity because it was quite conspicuous—how is it possible for a woman dressed as a maid with a completely different style to suddenly appear in the Law Enforcement Manor?
"Everybody has secrets. I believe we can all understand one another."
Hearing this, Valerian was slightly taken aback.
For a moment, she couldn’t determine if Song Lan knew about her identity from the start, considering his close relationship with Director Lu.
"If it were him, he would certainly understand you, as long as you..."
His words stopped abruptly.
While talking, Song Lan casually spread out his spiritual energy to consolidate the results of the afternoon’s street experiments.
But when the fast-forwarded process ended, the vision that manifested before his eyes was not of the two of them drinking merrily.
What appeared before him was a pool of blood and...
A fallen Valerian in the middle of it.
