Chapter 1049: Chapter 922: New God
As time passed, a mood of despair enveloped the entire square.
It wasn’t just Lute City, but survivors from other cities in Oasis, and even the Covenant Nation and the United Government, were watching everything unfolding in Lute City through live broadcasts.
For those who believed or hoped that the miracles of the God of Life could descend here, Ricochet’s recent words undoubtedly struck them hard.
In fact, aside from Ricochet and those who sincerely believed in the God of Life, no one was interested in the infighting among different Sects.
The labels of church and cult were ultimately decided by the final victors, a tradition since time immemorial, and those closely following the situation in Oasis hoped beyond hope to witness a real miracle that would provide a key to combat this unknown epidemic.
"Clap, clap clap clap—"
Applause emerged from the crowd.
But those clapping for Ricochet’s "brilliant" strategy were the cultists; after revealing their identities, they no longer bothered with disguises, "Worthy of you indeed, messenger of the God of Life, to think up a way to discern us in such a short time and design such a realistic Ceremony. Congratulations on successfully identifying us in the crowd."
They let proliferating plants take control of their bodies.
It was only then that the people in the square panickingly noticed a change in the clouds overhead, as more and more clouds gathered, their shapes becoming very strange. When they looked up, everyone felt that something was hiding above those clouds.
Something was looming over Lute City, looking down on them from a high vantage.
In the eyes of that unknown entity, these people gathered in the square were as insignificant as insects.
This overwhelming feeling, almost too much to bear, fit people’s imaginations of a Deity, to whom the entire world was merely their chessboard.
Those outside Lute, watching the live broadcast, could feel that chilling dread from the depths of their heart through the screen, an instinct seared into their genetic sequence.
"But at the same time, Ricochet, this is very disappointing."
The cultist’s speech continued, "We truly believed in the power of the God of Life and have strived until now. Are you telling me that the current God of Life can neither halt the spread of this epidemic, nor grant rest to the souls of those who once placed their hopes in Him? Is His only capability now to stir up internal fights within the Church, eliminating a few cultists in frustration?"
The survivors were in uproar.
This made the cultists even more smug, "But that’s inevitable, as times change, His power has dwindled terribly, ’not even one-tenth’ can hardly describe His current plight, one hundred? No, maybe one out of one hundred and fifty. In Lira, creating a massive tree was already His limit."
As he spoke, decay and foul smell spread across the square.
As the plants that had sprouted were enveloped by the corrosive gas, they quickly withered, and the cultists casually brushed aside, breaking free from the prison made of plants.
"But this is far from the limit of this plague, Oasis is just the beginning, soon it will spread to every nation... the United Government, neutral Covenant Nation, to every corner of this world, and that is the power a Deity should posses!"
"You, what exactly do you want to do?"
Someone in the crowd questioned the cultists.
"This is a selection mechanism."
The cultist rolled up his sleeves, revealing a mark on the back of his hand, "Of course, those marked by the New God can survive this plague and witness the arrival of a new era! Just like the Third War, those who survive will establish a new order on this land."
The crowd fell into a deadly silence again.
No one rebuked the cultist; everyone began to seriously consider the cultist’s invitation.
Those who are marked can become immune to this plague.
And for most people, the more tempting aspect is...
By joining the side of the victors, once the new era arrives and today’s world order is shattered, they might change their circumstances and secure a decent life.
As for whether it’s called the Church of Life or a cult, that was the least of the concerns. Should the New God championed by the cultists prevail in this war, they would naturally earn a justified reputation in the new era, while the remnants of the Church of Life would be labeled as the remnants of a cult.
So the only question they needed to confirm now was, "You just mentioned that the power of the God of Life has dramatically weakened, what’s that all about?"
"Don’t be swayed by the sweet words of the cultists!"
Ricochet tried to say something, but he quickly realized that everyone’s attention was on the cultists; no one bothered to give him another glance.
For a long time, the God of Life was the only hope for everyone to survive this plague, but now, the cultists offered them another possibility.
"If you don’t believe me, listen to what the experts say."
Following the gaze of the cultist, everyone’s attention shifted to the woman with the braided hair, who was nearly executed as a cultist a few days ago, "She was once the top archaeologist at the largest commercial house in the Covenant Nation and has touched the core secrets of the Oasis Peace Company."
