Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Don’t go crazy here _1

11:37, deep into the night.

In the guards’ break room of the remote-suburbs prison, Pero was sitting alone by the window, his gaze lazily drifting over the night sky, sleep eluding him.

The room was steeped in darkness, with only the moonlight feeble against the gloom. The room itself was starkly bare; apart from a few wooden beds, there was only a table and a few chairs remaining. Perhaps because of the hurried evacuation, the guards had left behind numerous personal belongings.

Cigarette packs, novels, professional books, magazines featuring provocative cover girls, and emptied cases of long gone compact discs were scattered around. They served as a grim testament to the mundane and dreary lives of the distant suburban prison’s guards.

A knock on the door disrupted the silence.

Before Pero could issue a response, the door inched open, and a petite girl with short yellow hair popped her head into the room. Her face was obscured by a gas mask, half hiding her features. A pair of hazel eyes peered through the fogged lenses of the mask.

She was donned in a white coat, yet due to the incessant skirmishes in the "outside world," it was faded to a dusty yellow. A few burnt holes on the bottom edge revealed glimpses of her thighs, covered in black stockings.

She held a burning flask emitting an unknown gas. Her voice came muffled through the gas mask, "All the prisoners have been put to sleep."

"You have my gratitude, Xu Xi."

"I still stand by my opinion."

Xu Xi voiced.

This was the second time she had reminded Pero, "We should depart as soon as possible."

Even though Region 17 was within the jurisdiction of the United Government, it was merely separated by a wall from the "outside world." This place was far from secure, especially since the detainee they were escorting was no ordinary prisoner but a pivotal figure of the Rebel Army.

The Witch of the Snow, Aishi.

In order to capture her, the special operations department had put in several months of planning and had even sacrificed three experienced rescuers. To the United Government, she was a vault of secrets, hence the team assigned to escorting Aishi could afford no missteps in ensuring she safely made it to the First Region.

This was a tribute to their fallen colleagues who lost their lives in the capture operation.

The escort mission should have proceeded smoothly, but...

After reaching Region 17, Pero had acted out of character.

He had not only overruled the initial plan and brought Aishi to the remote-suburbs prison but had also bizarrely extended their stay in Region 17. In his fit of pique, he had provoked the local gangs of the region.

Even though they were officially teammates with equal standings in the team, due to different responsibilities, most of the teams considered those with offensive capabilities as their core members, also known as "C seat" to others.

Pero was the undisputed core member of their team, having undergone prosthesis modification which was 53% of his body and equipped with weapon systems designed to counter psychic abilities. Therefore he had an absolutely prominent voice within the team.

After dismissing the guards from the remote-suburbs prison and confounding the prisoners into a comatose state, Xu Xi was then forced to consider another issue.

If Pero’s reckless behavior compromised the operation, she would need to formally request to be transferred out of the team.

There was no doubt about Pero’s combat capabilities, which were top of the line even within the special operations department, and he had garnered a reputation as the nemesis of psychic ability users. However, his intermittent mental instability was insufferable.

Often his teammates were unable to decipher his thoughts. The "outside world" not only failed to smoothen out his edges but also seemed to heighten his bouts of mania.

However, the United Government would not be concerned with such things. If this escort mission faced a hitch, Xu Xi might be held accountable along with Pero.

"The time is not ripe, Xu Xi."

Pero shook his head, "There is a great evil lurking in this city. Can’t you smell the scent of sin, sprouting and looming in this land?"

Under the moonlight, his face reflected sorrow. Seeing his mourning expression, Xu Xi wanted to reach out and feel his forehead, to check if the prosthetics he had implanted were faulty, and consequently had scorched his brain.

Influenced by her surroundings, Xu Xi also began to feel the weight of sorrow.

She realized her teammate was severely ill, the type of illness that had progressed beyond treatment.

She was merely a lackluster chemical weapons expert who had no understanding of how to repair a brain damaged by malfunctioning prosthetics.

"Sin must be eradicated."

"Yes, yes, yes."

Xu Xi sighed deeply, this was the seventh time in recent weeks she heard Pero saying that. For some reason, she felt Pero had completely forgotten the mission at hand and become trapped in his own world.

As the team member who lacked authority; how was she supposed to respond to Pero’s randomness?

Naturally, she only had one option – to comply with Pero, and hope the Rebel Army would experience a delay in reaching Region 17. "You’re always right. As long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters. I’ll go to the surveillance room to prevent any unwanted intrusions."

The sound of her high heels tapping against the floor gradually dwindled into silence, leaving the break room once again enveloped in silence.

Pero lifted his gaze to the sky again, which was cloaked in dark clouds.

A trace of menace flashed in his eyes.

Sin must be eradicated.

However, what Pero urgently wanted to exterminate was not the head of the criminal gangs in Region 17, not Lyon Seabot – the former mayor deeply entrenched with the underworld, nor the "benevolent citizen" that the rumors spoke of.

The real threat that needed immediate elimination was the Witch of the Snow, Aishi.

The moment they captured Aishi, they should have executed her on the spot.

However, on this issue, the teacher, special operations department, and even the United Government had a significant disagreement with him. They were planning to extradite Aishi back to the First Region from the "outside world". The mere thought of letting this sinister person linger alive was unacceptable to Pero.

He couldn’t go against the orders of the United Government, thus, he was left with no choice but to seek alternate methods.

Pero was convinced that he wasn’t delirious, instead, he believed his thoughts were crystal clear. He quickly came up with a method that would allow him to execute Aishi on the spot without repercussion from the United Government.

He needed to inform the Rebel Army’s rescue team of Aishi’s whereabouts and assassinate her while she was attempting to escape.

Due to the special nature of the "outside world" operation department, they were granted some autonomy to make decisions during emergencies. Therefore, he had leaked information that Aishi was locked up in the remote-suburbs prison, and all he needed to do now was wait for them to show up at his doorstep.

Region 17 was the predestined final resting place for the Witch of the Snow.

His task was to execute Aishi in this city and put an end to those who tried to rescue her – the evildoers who committed heinous crimes.

With this thought in mind, Pero’s eyes held a touch of determination.
