Chapter 1039: Chapter 917: 1 in 150 (Part One)_2
Legend has it that after the third war, the first people to return to the surface were guided by the God of Life to find this new homeland.
The God of Life never abandoned them.
The towering trees swayed a few times, and the fruits fell to the ground like rain.
Bathed in this apple rain, the people prayed devoutly, and when they bit into the apples, the diseases truly left them.
Lu Xiang watched the people crying with joy, their prayers and praises enveloping her, and their zealous faces always seemed a bit strange to her.
"Why do I feel like I’m the leader of a scam gang?"
As an upright Law Enforcer, her duty was to combat fraud gangs and all fervent church organizations, but Song Lan said that this was the first step of their plan and a necessary means for the people of the Oasis.
Belief is the antibody to infectious disease.
In any other context, anyone who made such statements would be closely monitored as a religious fanatic.
"You did indeed free them from the infectious disease, how could that be called a scam?"
Song Lan said with dark circles under his eyes, but he did understand Lu Xiang’s feelings at the moment.
The feeling of unreality filled everything when faced with a force too powerful, especially since Lu Xiang had gone through the Morning Star compulsory education and was a good student who had adopted the scientific principles of the United Government.
But this is the power of the upper world.
Even if it was only one hundred and fiftieth, it was enough to bring hope to people.
Lu Xiang pondered.
She strung the fragments into a necklace and hung it around her neck, which could also be considered a piece of jewelry given by Song Lan. Although it lacked design, it was far more valuable than any precious jewelry in the store.
"I went back to the Seventh District recently."
She said, "The director said that all my past records were forged."
Her birth originated from a meteorite.
She felt that she was getting closer and closer to the truth, according to Song Lan, the other half of her fallen power was now hidden somewhere in the Oasis.
"Isn’t that a good thing? I’ve always said, simplicity is the essence of truth."
Under the torment of sleepiness, Song Lan leaned lazily on a lounger under the shade, preferring the slow-paced life in District Seventeen, where he could clock out on time every day, and lay down for a good sleep whenever he was tired, instead of being sleepless all night due to some plague creator that had appeared out of nowhere.
"Old Void has never been so severely injured; he was drained of blood for tubes and tubes all night long!"
"...I feel like it’s your fault."
Lu Xiang knew Song Lan too well.
This man not only rejected any prosthesis transplantation technology but was also extremely resistant to medical procedures like injections and blood draws. Each time the department scheduled a physical examination, he would find an excuse to skip it, so much so that it wasn’t until they got to the Oasis that she saw Song Lan’s full medical report for the first time.
"Yes, it’s entirely your fault!"
Old Void’s voice approached from a distance. He had run out of the Oasis Prosthesis Hospital and now wanted to kick Song Lan off the chair with a fly kick.
If it hadn’t been for Song Lan constantly persuading him, how could those few crickets possibly take away tubes and tubes of his blood?
What was even more infuriating was that after Lu Xiang arrived, this bastard only cared about leaving on his own, leaving him alone in the hospital.
"Why are you out here?"
"I told them about Ricochet, and they finally decided to make a trip to Lute City."
In Song Lan’s plan, Ricochet was a key figure in spreading the teachings of the Church of Life. Once the medical team arrived in Lute City, they would discover a miracle from Ricochet.
He had to give a reason that the medical team couldn’t refuse in order to get away.
——If you take my blood again, I’ll shank all of you.
As it turned out, a threat was always simpler and more effective than a scam.
Realizing that the security chief Lu Xiang had already left, and their combat capability was essentially negligible, the medical team prudently released "Nothingness."
Song Lan decided to use a three-step plan to turn all Oasis people into followers of the God of Life, an expansion plan so radical that even in the past era, it would have been described as audaciously ambitious.
"But they really know how to hold their breath,"
"Nothingness" naturally referred to the Oasis Peace Company, which had expected the other party to do everything possible to exacerbate the spread of the disease and destroy this giant tree. Now, however, there was no sign of movement from the company, "Could it be that they’ve fled? That wouldn’t be a wise decision either."
"It’s not that simple."
Song Lan shook his head, δ said, "Corruption" is a villain who would do anything for his goals, his ambition for power wouldn’t allow him to just watch the power he had in hand slip away, "This is the chance to go through the long-sealed path to the upper world."
The dean of the Purple Wisteria Academy had spent most of his life on this illusory future for this opportunity.
"Old Void, it must have been a while since you interviewed a newcomer."
............
Meanwhile, in Lute City.
Ricochet made his way down the steep staircase, at the bottom of which lay an entirely unfamiliar area.
Having lived in Lute City for so many years, he never knew the city hid such a place.
The staircase was originally Skull Gang territory, and since the Skull Gang’s downfall, this hostel had taken control.
The pungent smell was everywhere, and with the dim light from a cellphone, it wasn’t hard to see that the basement of the hostel was much like a prison, with cells for confining prisoners and interrogation rooms filled with torture devices.
Just last night, he heard a Whisper that differed from the God of Life.
The Whisper guided him here and promised him a cure for the contagion.
"I can hear the hesitation in your heart."
The Whisper was close, seemingly only a few steps away.
When Ricochet pushed open the innermost door of the prison, what appeared before him was a familiar statue.
Two streams of blood tears flowed down the statue’s eye sockets.
Ricochet’s expression suddenly changed; the insect-like doctor had said that these two streams of blood tears were the source of the plague.
"Every night, in the quiet, you constantly ask yourself, why you, what is so special about you? An instructor in a camp, people like you are everywhere in the Oasis."
The explosion sound covered the Whisper from the statue.
The fragmented statue scattered, turning into a pile of rubble.
The God of Life had not granted him an extraordinary way of fighting, so before setting off, Ricochet had visited the arsenal, the object he had just thrown was a high-explosive grenade taken from the arsenal.
The thick smoke spread through the room, and the broken statue somewhat calmed him.
"In this world, there is more than one deity beyond the God of Life."
The Whisper did not cease, "Titles and powers are not important; only strength is the key to control everything. She is now waning, and can’t Lira’s happenings awaken you? Your god, despite her utmost effort, did no more than temporarily protect a city."
The Whisper paused, then added, "Whenever I wish, I can make the sacred tree wither and kill all the people in the city, for now, I am that powerful. However, I can also stop this plague, something your god could not do despite her best efforts, I can achieve with a mere thought. So, what about you, Ricochet? Do you want this plague to end right here?"
"What exactly are you trying to say?"
"I want to help you, help you, the God of Life’s emissary, stop this pestilence. I imagine the people would forever record your good deeds in the Church’s scriptures; perhaps in some years, everyone will remember the name Ricochet, the hero who saved the Oasis."
Ricochet emotionlessly activated the flame thrower.
He now intended to cleanse all the sources of infection.
"This is too much trouble, Ricochet, I told you, I can help you. I sincerely hope the God of Life can re-congregate her followers and revive this land," said the voice as the blood in front of his eyes evaporated into thin air before the flame could touch the ground, "And then, I can crush her in front of all her followers and take everything from her."
