Chapter 1035: Chapter 916: Fruit of Hope

"Breathing, restored."

"Organ failure has stopped."

"A miracle, this is a miracle!"

The excited voices in the ward furrowed the brow of the diplomatic executive. The moment he was awakened, the pain and weakness surged again.

He squinted through a slit in his eyes and saw the excited doctors in the ward, their movements restricted by the heavy isolation suit, preventing them from celebrating more extravagantly.

His memory still lingered at the conference, and just before his consciousness was engulfed by darkness, it seemed as if someone had approached him.

Then, a bright red, tempting apple fell in front of him.

Is this, hell?

There is a legend in the Oasis that a person’s soul does not immediately dissipate after death. Those who have committed many evil deeds will fall into hell.

This legend embodies the most straightforward, and also the last hope of the people.

In real life unable to make changes, nor able to resist the darkness that shrouds this land, people can only hope that evildoers will receive their comeuppance after death.

If the legend were true, then someone like him should rightfully fall into hell after death.

"Director Brock, you are awake indeed!"

The doctor excitedly said, "Don’t get agitated. Though the virus inside you has disappeared, you are still very weak, the healing of skin lesions and organ damage will take some time, please rest assured, we have prepared the best recovery plan for you."

With the current prosthetic technology, organ failure is not a problem at all. Once the body strength of the diplomatic officer recovers a bit, they could immediately prepare for the organ transplant surgery.

The latest synthetic organs are much stronger than the original human organs.

Brock took a long time to accept his current situation.

Even in the isolation zone, the ward was still luxurious. Through the anti-toxic face mask of the isolation suit, he recognized one of the people.

It was a professor of considerable reputation in the Oasis council.

As an official of the Oasis, he enjoyed the platinum membership package in the best hospital of the so-called Neutral Country, a "benefit" specially prepared by the Brotherhood for them. The Oasis Prosthesis Hospital provides a professional medical team around the clock for holders of the platinum membership scheme. Their motto is that they can snatch a person back from the grip of death, even if they have but one breath left.

But evidently, the Oasis Prosthesis Hospital’s claims were at odds with the current situation.

As Brock knew, in just one day, one-third of the members of the platinum package had died, among them the first confirmed deceased was the leader of the Brotherhood.

This is an indiscriminate contagious disease; members of the Brotherhood, as well as their protectors, could not escape this disaster.

"...Did you save me?"

Ultimately, Brock reached a conclusion.

For some reason, he had survived.

"It wasn’t us, it was, it was an apple."

The expert stuttered a bit as everyone knew it was a nearly absurd reason, and they still couldn’t find any theoretical basis for an apple to cure a contagious disease until now. Yet, bizarrely, Brock had become the first survivor they encountered today who had weathered the disease and lived.

This phenomenon, inexplicable by modern medicine, they could only describe as a miracle.

Brock’s gaze drifted to the nightstand, where a bitten red apple lay quietly placed on it. The sky outside the window was already turning belly-white, indicating that several hours had passed since he went to the conference.

The bitten area hadn’t oxidized; the whole apple still looked bright red and tempting.

"Director Brock, rest more; we need to continue our research."

The excitement of a miraculous event kept the medical team from sleeping; they were eager to understand the connection between the apple and the epidemic. Once they understood that, they could find the key to conquering the plague.

The medical team soon left.

Brock lifted a corner of the coverlet; the ulcerated parts of his body were already bandaged, but at this moment, he felt no joy of having survived a calamity.

In the doctors’ words, his recovery had become the hope of the Oasis people, affecting everyone’s life.

But in his view, it was indeed fate’s mockery and teasing.

Fate had allowed a man filled with sins to survive but took away his innocent and kind daughter.

"No, this is wrong..."

When the ward returned to silence, Brock couldn’t help but mutter, "There must be a mistake."

Good is rewarded with good, and evil with evil; this is people’s simplest emotion, and the mythological system of the Oasis is also based on this principle.

The Deity blesses the upright and kind, and punishes those who commit many evils.

So, it should have been his daughter who deserved to survive and become the hope of the people.

"Oasis Peace Company."

Before long, another voice sounded in the room.

He turned his face and saw someone in an isolation suit, the anti-toxic face mask being the same model as other medical workers, but he couldn’t see the person’s face, recognizing from the voice that she was a woman.

He also didn’t realize how she had entered.

Yes, before his consciousness dissipated, he had heard this voice.

That voice had told him to eat the apple, saying it might make him feel better.

"Before you fell unconscious, you seemed to be trying to convey a message."
