Chapter 1026: Chapter 912: Embrace Death to Seek Life

Before dawn broke on the second day, Lu Xiang sat on the bed in his bedroom, staring in the direction of the sunrise, his heart filled with a sense of guilt.

"What are you doing, Lu Xiang?"

He rubbed his face, questioning himself.

As an upright Enforcer, he should have drawn a clear line against fraudsters and actively fought against all of their actions, yet not long ago, he had listened to the advice of a professional con artist and hacked into the prosthetic operating system of a public official of Oasis, implanting an idea into his mind.

Technically, it wasn’t difficult, but it violated his inner conscience.

Because he knew that once this idea took root, it would bring earth-shattering changes to that person’s life.

And indeed, on the eve of dawn, Lute City welcomed a turn of events significant enough to be recorded in the history of Oasis.

The commander was awakened from his sleep by urgent footsteps; servants rushed into the room, decorated like a palace, bringing disastrous news.

For some unknown reason, the drillmaster had acted on a whim today and, before daylight, led a group of fully armed soldiers straight to his residence, surrounding the house tightly.

The commander tried to remain composed as he dressed, managing to finish washing up before his subordinates barged in.

"I thought joining the Church would at least keep you quiet for a while."

He scrutinized the drillmaster with a stern gaze, "A war is imminent, your Archbishop surely wouldn’t permit you to engage in such pointless actions, would he, Ricochet?"

The commander was quite certain of this.

Once a person reaches a certain status, they come into contact with the true rules of the game in this world.

In Oasis, the government forces, the Church of Life, the Brotherhood, and the Oasis Peace Company, are fundamentally the same—common interests bind them tightly together, and there are those naive youngsters who harbor absurd thoughts of challenging these rules.

The God of Life does not exist, it is merely a means to corral the hearts of people.

If one were to speak frankly, in a place like Oasis, those who wield power are the God of Life.

"Officer, this might be the last time I address you in this manner."

Despite having barely slept for less than two hours last night, the drillmaster felt more awake than ever.

He was keenly aware of what he was doing and where this path would lead.

What he needed to do now was race against time.

"I want to know, where did the order to engage in all-out war with the Rebel Army come from?"

The commander standing before him was merely a pawn in the chain of interests; someone else was manipulating everything behind the scenes.

"That’s none of your business. Now, get out of my house."

The commander barked furiously, "Remember your place."

"Before I came to your residence, I made a trip to your office."

The drillmaster spoke as he produced a data chip.

Bluffing.

The commander wished he could say that; his dealings with the Brotherhood and the Oasis Peace Company over the years had been encrypted at the highest level. Not to mention a mere camp drillmaster—even a top hacker infiltrating his office would be helpless. This was the elite promise of the Oasis Peace Company to him.

Yet the current situation gave him pause for thought.

"According to the laws of Oasis, the evidence inside here is enough to put you on trial."

Although recurrent suspicions had long since existed regarding the commander’s daily actions, Ricochet was still profoundly shaken when he saw the transaction records and the flow of money.

The commander’s actions were no different from those of warlords in conflict-ridden areas.

Human trafficking, illicit drug circulation, organ trafficking...

Every crime recorded in the laws of Oasis had the commander’s shadow looming over it.

The evidence of these crimes was easily found, further proving that the guidance he had listened to the night before was not a drunken hallucination.

"Now, I am going to arrest you in accordance with the laws of Oasis."

Lute City didn’t have a department like the Enforcers; during non-wartime, the local military assumed such a role.

"Utterly foolish."

The commander took a deep breath, his gaze shifting from Ricochet to the others, "What are you standing around for? Drillmaster Ricochet has gone mad. Take him to the prosthetic hospital or somewhere else. He needs treatment."

This series of conversations had already left him somewhat speechless.

He truly suspected that Ricochet had lost his mind, acting like a newbie who completely misunderstood the situation, attempting to use the laws of Oasis to sanction his actions.

People like him have never been under the jurisdiction of the law.

Even if Ricochet had truly hacked into the database of Oasis Peace Company and found things unfavorable to the overall situation, even if all of this were made public, it would not affect him in the least.

This was Oasis after the encirclement campaign.

History had already proved everything.

Those who had once, like Ricochet, sought to bring about change in this land had all become corpses. By now, there were probably not many people who could still remember their names.

The name Ricochet was nothing special either. People would soon forget it.

The commander no longer wanted to waste his time on Ricochet. This group of unwanted guests had severely affected his mood. He now needed to retrieve a bottle from his wine cellar and pair it with some caviar to ease the poor start to his morning.
