Chapter 1018: Chapter 908: Faith Thief_2
Those with connections all made their way to District Seventeen, where the entry permits for District Seventeen had been inflated to sky-high prices.
Concerned about the market environment in District Seventeen and the spread of Oasis’s corrupt influences to the district, Song Lan immediately reported what he had heard to his superiors.
The issue promptly drew significant attention from the Law Enforcers department, and Lu Xiang personally led a team to the border inspection station, where they even rooted out several guards who had taken bribes.
"I’ve come to know." "Nothingness" recalled the past and had an epiphany, "You want to return to your old ways again!"
He was one of the few who knew the extent of Song Lan’s fearsomeness.
Once an army had someone like Song Lan infiltrate its ranks, its doom was not far off.
The entire force would be corrupted by him, and even the most diligent and impassioned officers would be influenced by his ideology after prolonged association with Song Lan.
Yet, Song Lan always beautified his actions with words.
A bloodless revolution, where everyone could have a happy ending.
And now, he planned to infiltrate the temporary military forces assembled by the Oasis Peace Company.
"Old Void, take a good look at the build of these people, the Oasis Peace Company surely won’t send them to the battlefield."
Song Lan said.
The ones queuing here were not even comparable to regular street thugs, whereas he had experienced the United Government’s massive military recruitment. Before dispatching the Expeditionary Army to the battlefield, every city had set up barracks and had professionals train the registrants for a week. Moreover, most recruits had a criminal record, making firearms no stranger to them; thus, a makeshift Expeditionary Army was barely assembled.
But even if these people before him were brainwashed and went all out in a bloody struggle against the Rebel Army, they wouldn’t be enough to fill the gaps between another’s teeth.
Especially since the Rebel Army’s cadre included many experts like Aishi, possessing wide-ranging AOE skills.
The freeloaders were often in good spirits, never known for their combat prowess.
"What are they gathering these people for then? Because the dispatched troops were annihilated, are they desperately struggling in a no-win situation?"
"Nothingness" was puzzled.
If the Brotherhood were recognized as a legitimate organization by the United Government, they could involve civilians in the chaos and condemn the Rebel Army’s atrocities from an international perspective—this was a common tactic used by many Covenant Nations, but it didn’t apply to the Brotherhood.
In the "outside world", no organization had a worse reputation than they did.
This matter, if brought up in international discourse, would only lead people to applaud, and it might even reverse the reputation of the Rebel Army.
"You see, that’s the issue, I’ve been pondering over this the whole time."
This once again proved that he really wasn’t staring at the nun, nor was he interested in the tight-fitting nun’s uniform.
But if Lu Xiang insisted on wearing it, then he would have to respect her choice.
"What conclusion have you come to?"
"Swarm tactics might not be effective against the Rebel Army, but they are more than sufficient for the Church’s faithful. Just in Lute City, they desperately needed so many hands; how many believers do you think will be available to the Church if they add up all the people from every border city in the Oasis?"
"I see!"
"Nothingness" was stunned; the methods Song Lan had just mentioned were precisely the ones they were most familiar with.
Expanding the Church, gathering a congregation, and then reinforcing the believers’ faith through "miracles" were all tactics they once commonly used.
In the midst of their conversation, suddenly a commotion erupted at the front of the crowd.
A military jeep roared in, dispersing the crowd, and stopped beside the supply station. Two anxious Oasis soldiers leaped from the vehicle and carried a man soaked in blood down from the jeep.
At first glance, the man they carried off seemed to have more than a dozen bullet holes on him; his eyes were tightly closed, and blood continuously spurted from his wounds, clearly beyond saving.
For the people of Oasis, this was hardly anything new.
Gunfights happened every day where they lived, and the army was not a safe haven either.
The local government forces often clashed with the Brotherhood’s organizations over the uneven distribution of ill-gotten wealth; after living in this city for a while, everyone was familiar with bullet-riddled corpses.
Those at the front of the queue shook their heads and turned their gaze away.
His body was riddled like a sieve; even a god couldn’t save him now.
However, to everyone’s surprise, the sisters from the Church took over the care of this dying soldier. They carried the soldier onto a stretcher, cut open his shirt, and applied a special ointment to his wounds.
A surgery was proceeding in an orderly fashion before the eyes of the believers.
Any professional seeing this surgery would have shaken their heads, the lack of sterilization measures and the absence of proper tools, not to mention the dubious origin of some ointments, would have doomed the patient for sure. Even if by some miracle they didn’t die, there was an extremely high chance of infection from the wound.
Yet, against all odds in what seemed a hopeless situation, the convulsions of the injured person slowly ceased.
The onlookers’ eyes bulged as they saw the wound beginning to scab over, and the fountain-like gushing blood also came to a stop.
It took about five minutes or so before the injured person opened their eyes. Although still weak, they managed to get up with the help of their comrades.
The nun passed the ointment to the comrades, gave them a few words of instruction, and then the jeep drove off into the distance.
There it was!
For "Nothingness," this scene was all too familiar.
How to make people believe that "God" truly exists?
The simplest method is to perform a miracle beyond their understanding right before their eyes and subtly suggest that such miracles might one day happen to them as a result of their faith.
The effect of the "miracle" was immediate.
The people lining up unanimously took out the booklet distributed by the nuns and started to carefully read about the follow-up details of the free supplies, specifically about the Church of the God of Life.
Some with wishful thinking, after receiving the supplies, posed new questions.
Can the God of Life cure terminal illnesses?
Can the God of Life heal lingering disabilities caused by injuries?
Is limb regeneration possible?
All these questions were met with ambiguous answers.
If your faith is strong enough, the God of Life will hear your wishes.
While distributing the supplies, the nuns carried gentle smiles, bringing blessings to the people.
When questioned about enlisting in the military, they patiently explained that it was a legitimate promotion conducted by the Oasis government’s military through the Oasis Peace Company, unrelated to the Brotherhood.
When revolution and war are upon us, the people need to defend their country.
"They stole our methods!"
Even the procedures and methods were exactly the same as the Church’s back then!
But as the upper world crumbled, the Church too vanished into thin air; nowadays, the United Government believes in science and bans all activities related to religion.
"There’s nothing to be angry about, it’s legal competition."
"Spill it, what crazy scheme do you have up your sleeve now?"
Even though reluctant, "Nothingness" had to admit that Song Lan, back in his days in the upper world, excelled at exploiting the rules to his advantage.
Competing for believers has always been a grey area; even within the same Church, competition was unavoidable, and the number of believers directly influenced their Spiritual Energy strength.
Song Lan was an outlier amongst them.
He never developed his own believers but only stole others’.
"Nothingness" felt that the residents of the upper world combined probably didn’t lose as many believers as Song Lan stole on his own.
"I said it’s legal competition."
Song Lan had to stress, "You can’t slander me just because you’ve never competed against me!"
"I get it."
"Nothingness" ignored Song Lan’s smooth talk and had an epiphany, "You’re going to steal their believers again, you Faith Thief!"
Beware of fire, theft, and Song Lan.
That was an unwritten rule of the upper world.
If you don’t want your believers to suddenly decrease substantially, it’s best to stay away from Song Lan!
