Chapter 75: [Just ANSWER]

His mind was a hive—buzzing with possibilities, questions.

With a groan, he sat up. "Screw it."

He slipped quietly out of his room, the corridor cloaked in darkness.

To his right, the room of the Divine General—probably sharpening a blade with his mind.

Across the hall—Selene’s room. He remembered that much. Or thought he did.

Kael hesitated for a moment, then shrugged.

Just checking in. Nothing weird.

He opened the door of the room quietly and stepped inside.

The moonlight barely reached through the small window, painting soft silver on the floor.

A figure lay in bed, sound asleep.

Kael approached, not thinking too deeply.

He just felt... tired.

Maybe a little selfish.

He climbed in, gently, and slipped an arm around the figure’s waist.

Selene’s really soft tonight, he thought drowsily.

She must’ve switched soaps. Smells nice, too... minty?

The figure stiffened.

But Kael, already drifting off, didn’t notice.

"Mmm... warm..." he muttered, pulling her closer.

Across the room, Nyra’s eyes were wide open.

Her soul had already left her body.

She lay perfectly still, breathing shallowly, as if any movement would summon divine judgment—or worse, a very awkward conversation.

Oh gods.

Oh no.

He thinks I’m Selene.

Do I... do I bite him? Cry?

I should scream.

No—stab him?

No—pretend I’m dead. Yes. Dead women don’t get spooned by walking disasters.

Kael, blissfully unaware, nuzzled slightly closer. "Mmm... minty..."

Why is he sniffing me?! Why is he—?!

Kael let out a soft snore, dead to the world.

Nyra stared into the void, praying it would stare back and swallow her whole.

Nyra shifted, just slightly—enough to nudge Kael with her elbow in a silent, desperate plea.

He furrowed his brows, still half-lost in sleep.

Why is she acting weird today? he wondered vaguely, not loosening his arm in the slightest.

If anything... he tightened it.

Nyra nearly screamed.

Kael, shameless in his drowsy haze, nestled a little closer, mumbling under his breath,

"So soft tonight..."

That was the final straw.

Nyra gave another, firmer push, trying to squirm away.

Kael blinked, finally registering the odd tension, the resistance—not sleepy reluctance, but the barely-contained terror of someone who wanted to phase through a wall and escape.

He frowned, brain slowly—painfully—starting to boot up.

Then came the sound that froze them both:

Click.

The door opened.

Soft footsteps.

And a familiar, groggy voice.

"Nyra..." Selene yawned.

"There really wasn’t a mouse, okay? I checked the whole damn floor twice."

Kael went rigid.

So did Nyra.

Selene stepped into the dark room, sighing.

"But fine, you can take the lower bed if it helps you sleep. I’ll just take the upper—"

She moved toward the bunk, completely unaware of the situation unfolding below.

Kael’s eyes, now wide and fully awake, slowly drifted downward to the figure lying in his arms.

Nyra stared back.

They locked eyes.

For a single breathless moment, there was only silence.

Pure panic passed between them like a current.

That’s not Selene.

That’s Nyra.

I am in Nyra’s bed.

I have spooned the wrong woman.

I am going to die.

Nyra’s expression screamed exactly the same thing.

Selene was already climbing into the top bunk, wood creaking faintly above them. She hadn’t seen him.

The darkness had saved him—for now.

Then her voice drifted down casually.

"Are you asleep, Nyra?"

Another silence.

A long one.

Kael’s entire body tensed. He glanced at Nyra, eyes practically begging now.

Answer.

Answer or we both die.

Please, gods, just make a sound. A grunt. A cough. Fake a seizure, I don’t care.

Just ANSWER.

Nyra’s mouth opened slightly. Her tongue refused to move. She blinked. Slowly. Horrified.

Kael gave her a tiny, frantic shake.

Selene waited patiently above.

Nyra’s lips parted. Nothing came out.

Kael stared at her like a prisoner on death row watching the judge hesitate.

Selene’s voice drifted down again, a little more curious now.

"Nyra?"

Nyra’s eyes darted left, then right, as if scanning for an escape hatch in the wall. She swallowed, mouth dry as sand.

Then—finally—she spoke.

"...Y-yeah?"

It came out an octave too high. Almost a squeak. Like a mouse pretending to be a girl pretending not to be lying under Kael.

Kael flinched.

Selene, thankfully, just laughed softly from the top bunk.

"Told you there was no mouse. You’re hearing things again. Get some sleep, you paranoid bat."

"R-right..." Nyra whispered, staring at Kael with the expression of someone who had just defused a bomb by sneezing.

Kael muttered a curse under his breath,

"Damn it, Yue... Why didn’t you tell me I was crawling straight into my own funeral?"

Only laughter echoed back in his mind—cold, mocking, and utterly unhelpful.

He shifted slightly, but didn’t pull away from Nyra.

Instead, his grip tightened just a bit more, drawn by the softness beneath his hand.

Nyra’s heart skipped a beat.

Why hasn’t he left yet? she wondered, a shiver running down her spine.

She tried to squirm free, to create some distance—any distance—but Kael, half-asleep and stubborn, simply clung tighter, his fingers curling gently yet possessively.

Her urge to scream bubbled up, but Kael’s warm breath whispered close, almost like a command.

"Hey... if I’m going to die tomorrow, why not enjoy the softest pillow first?" he mumbled with a lazy grin, completely unaware of the chaos he was causing.

Nyra’s mind screamed Help!

While her body froze in confused defeat, stuck in a slow dance between panic and reluctant acceptance.

Nyra didn’t give up.

She leaned closer to Kael’s ear and whispered, "Kael... go. This is wrong."

But instead of pulling away, Kael felt a tickle on his ear — a gentle breath, like a feather brushing his skin.

Without missing a beat, he returned the favor, blowing soft air into her ear and murmuring, "Why don’t you enjoy this?"

Nyra’s breath hitched.

For the first time, she looked up and really saw him — bathed in the pale moonlight, his face was strikingly handsome, every feature sharp and defined.

Her cheeks flushed deeply, heat rushing through her.
