Chapter 69: [I came... to end you]

"Yeah... dumb bitch picked the wrong king in a kingdom of wolves."

Selene shot him a sharp look.

Kael just shrugged.

"What? I learned my family values."

Kael yanked Selene by the wrist as a wall of concussive heat rolled over the courtyard.

They dove behind a ruined pillar, breaths shallow, bodies low.

Dust coated the inside of his mouth like ash.

The air felt poisoned with power.

Above them, death danced.

The Duke and General Morien clashed in a hellstorm of steel and spell.

Morien, drenched in blood and sweat, surged forward with his saber, each strike like a falling guillotine.

The Duke met him blade for blade, one hand drawing defensive sigils mid-air while the other carried his sword like it was fate itself.

Runes across both men’s armor flared, golden and crimson, clashing with every blow.

Sparks and blood mingled.

It was no longer a duel—it was a collapse of control.

The Duke’s voice rang out, hollow and thunderous,

"This is your reward for treachery, Morien!"

Morien spat, his eyes glowing with unstable energy.

"Treachery? You call it that when the King demands your head?"

With one sudden gesture, he unleashed a torrent of flame—but the Duke twisted, absorbing the heat into a shield rune and replying with a wave of jagged ice spears.

Three struck Morien’s side, lodging into his armor.

He ripped them out with a snarl.

The earth beneath their feet cracked.

Every tree around the courtyard was now aflame or uprooted.

Corpses of some rank 2 soldiers lay forgotten, twisted, torn—bodies melted by magic, some still twitching.

Selene pressed a hand to her mouth. "Gods..."

Kael didn’t answer.

His eyes were on Morien’s right hand—how it wasn’t casting anymore, how his movements had grown uneven.

He was slowing.

Then came the turn.

The Duke drove his blade into Morien’s thigh with a roar, then blasted him back with a concussive shockwave that shattered windows three wings away.

Morien hit the wall hard—his body smashing through stone and mortar—leaving a deep crater where he collapsed.

He coughed violently, blood bubbling from his lips, his frame trembling with the effort to breathe.

Silence

The courtyard fell into an oppressive silence, thick with the weight of death and destruction.

Kael’s eyes locked on Morien’s broken form.

The general looked utterly defeated—far more quickly than Kael had expected.

A cold chill crawled over him.

Was it really over? Or just the calm before a darker storm?

Slowly, the Duke stepped forward, his gait heavy but unbroken.

His eyes were dark embers, reflecting the ruin around him.

Kael’s gaze flicked across the battlefield.

The Rank 2 soldiers were mostly alive, though many bore wounds—some collapsed, some desperately clutching at shattered limbs.

The courtyard lay in ruin—cracked stones, fallen beams, blood pooling in dark, sticky patches.

From the shattered gates, faint sounds of footsteps echoed—civilian voices, curious and terrified, stirring in the aftermath.

Kael tightened his grip on Selene’s arm.

The horror was far from over.

The Duke said, "Its Over."

It should’ve ended there.

But it didn’t.

Morien laughed.

It was hollow.

Low.

Like someone whispering from inside a grave.

"You think... I came here to live?"

His chest glowed now.

A deep red light, pulsing from within, growing brighter.

"I came... to end you"

Kael’s eyes widened. "He’s—"

"Self-detonating!" he screamed, grabbing Selene.

Kael’s mind went blank — the world around him slowed, every sound stretching into an endless echo.

Selene’s eyes were wide with shock, frozen in place as if the explosion had stolen her breath.

Without hesitation, Kael shouted, voice raw and urgent:

"Venom!"

At once, the sinister presence stirred deep within his ear — the black slime from his very core awakening from its slumber.

It expanded rapidly, tendrils of dark energy crawling beneath his skin with terrifying speed.

He felt it coil around him and Selene, a protective shroud — cold, alien, yet fierce and alive.

In that suspended moment,

Far from the wreckage, the Duke’s eyes flickered with dawning realization — but it was already too late.

Across the battlefield, Morien’s twisted figure was weaving dark incantations, a shadowy aura pulsating from his hands.

The self-detonation spell was already taking form — a final act born from desperation.

He knew he could not win.

Yet, with a grim resolve, he chose annihilation over defeat — destruction at any cost.

The black venom clung tighter to Kael and Selene, a silent guardian against the coming storm.

Silence stretched, thick and suffocating, before—

BOOOOM.

The world split open.

A shockwave tore through the mansion with apocalyptic force.

Even within the embrace of Venom’s protection, the sheer pressure was monstrous.

Kael and Selene were slammed against the ground.

Their bodies convulsed.

Kael felt blood explode from his nose and mouth.

His ribs groaned—crack, crack—and he knew some had snapped.

Selene screamed, but it was muffled, swallowed by the storm.

Her eyes rolled back as crimson streaked from her lips.

The black slime trembled violently, its surface blistering and bubbling under the relentless force.

It held on, barely—but even Venom had its limits.

And then, mercifully, the blast began to die.

The thunder faded into a long, wheezing silence.

The smoke was everywhere.

Thick. Suffocating.

Smoldering chunks of the once-proud estate rained down in fiery embers.

Venom, scorched and visibly wounded, shuddered.

It shrank rapidly, tendrils curling inward, until with a sickly slither it re-entered Kael’s ear—retreating into the shadows within.

Kael coughed blood again, blinking through haze and agony.

The silence now was different.

It was the silence of death.

As the choking fog finally began to thin, the devastation unveiled itself like a funeral shroud pulled back.

Kael stood in the hollow skeleton of what once was the great ducal House.

Everything... was gone.

Not ruined. Not broken.

Erased.
