Chapter 61: Final Wave (III)

Kael ducked low.

The spear’s tip split the air above his head, slicing a few strands of hair. His eyes sharpened, and he twisted his hips, —Eclipse Step— activating with a pulse of energy.

He reappeared behind the warrior and attacked without any hesitation.

His Abyssal Fang Dagger punched into the gap beneath the shoulder plate. A gurgle escaped the warrior’s lips before he crumpled—[EXP +1050]. The system ticked: [Progress: 64/100 Enemies Defeated].

Kael’s breath came hard and fast. The forest’s mist clung to his skin like sweat, and the heat from the tigers’ flames warmed the air to suffocation.

A furious roar split the silence.

One of the Azure Flame Tigers charged again, its fangs bared and body wreathed in blue fire. Kael sprinted toward a nearby cliffside, every muscle screaming. Just as the tiger lunged, he planted a foot on a mossy boulder and kicked off, flipping backward mid-air.

The beast slammed into the stone head-on.

Crack!

The rock shattered, stunning the beast for half a second—but it was just long enough.

Kael landed behind it, dagger flashing, plunging deep into the back of its neck. The tiger convulsed before falling limp in a pool of its own blood—[EXP +1075].

He didn’t pause. There was no time to admire the kill because the second tiger was already upon him. And this one was faster.

Kael ducked and rolled under its swiping claws, the heat from its flames searing his back—[HP: 71%].

"Persistent bastard," he hissed.

He climbed a nearby tree, leaping branch to branch, leading the tiger into a clearing filled with dry, deadwood. He threw two obsidian knives, each one thudding into the ground ahead. Their poison cores hissed.

The tiger didn’t care.

But the moment it stepped over the blades, Kael snapped his fingers—small sparks dancing between them. He’d charged the knives with a spark talisman.

BOOM!

Flames and poison exploded in a burst of black-green fire.

The tiger screeched, and despite its fire affinity, its body writhed in agony as its fur sizzled. Kael dropped from the trees, landed on its back, and drove his dagger deep between its shoulder blades—[EXP +1075].

Only the Ironback Bears and Inferno Lions remained. And those eighteen Primal Warriors.

Kael’s body trembled. His stamina bar hovered below 45%. Adaptive Regeneration worked overtime, but the sheer number of enemies was draining him dry. His cloak was scorched, his arms cut, his breathing ragged.

RUMBLE!~

A sudden tremor shook the ground.

Three Ironback Armored Bears charged together, like battering rams of pure muscle and steel.

Kael didn’t retreat, instead, he charged them head-on.

At the last second, he dove low, sliding beneath the first bear’s legs. As it turned to swipe, he sprang up, his dagger stabbing upward into its armpit and drawing a deep gash until its rear end.

The second bear slammed into his side with its paw—[HP: 58%].

Kael rolled, blood pouring out of his mouth and then he scrambled up, just as the third bear lunged. He ignored the pain and dove sideways, clipping a tree trunk, and used its momentum to spin back toward the injured bear.

His dagger found the same wound and twisted—[EXP +1050].

One down. He leaped back, gasping.

ROAR!~

A lion’s roar echoed.

The Inferno Lions entered the fray again, their blazing manes lighting the dim forest.

Kael narrowed his eyes. "Time to thin the herd."

He dashed sideways, baiting one lion to follow.

It lunged.

Kael used —Eclipse Step— in mid-air, appearing beside it. He jammed his dagger into the lion’s ribs and used its momentum to fling himself to safety—[EXP +950].

He landed in a crouch, but a spear whistled through the air just before he could regain his balance.

A Primal Warrior had attacked.

Kael blocked with his dagger, the force pushing him back, his feet sliding on damp leaves. Another warrior came from behind with his blade swinging downward.

He ducked and the blade missed by inches.

Kael kicked back, his boot cracking ribs, and twisted, slashing open the first warrior’s throat—[EXP +1025].

The second lunged again.

Kael sidestepped, grabbed his arm, and threw him into a charging lion. Both went down in a heap of claws and metal.

"Thanks for the assist," Kael muttered and finished the both of them while they were tangled—[EXP +1900].

[Progress: 75/100 Enemies Defeated]

He was bleeding from his side now. The Adaptive Regeneration wasn’t working fast enough anymore. His limbs felt heavy and sluggish.

The Essence Latch pulsed, feeding him a jolt of stamina. Just enough.

Another bear, another warrior, and a lion charged.

Kael snarled. "Come on, then!"

He threw his last obsidian knife—dead center in the bear’s eye. It howled—[EXP +1050].

Kael dashed forward, ignoring the lion’s flame. His cloak caught fire—[HP: 52%].

He used —Eclipse Step— again, a desperate flicker to dodge the lion’s fangs. His dagger slammed down into its skull—[EXP +1000].

Only twenty-two opponents were left now. Nineteen warriors, two bears, and one lion.

He turned, panting.

Kael’s vision blurred. His HP dipped to 45%. His stamina hovered at 29%.

They circled him warily.

He took one deep breath. His foot slammed into the earth and he shot forward like a cannon loose.

The nearest Primal Warrior raised his blade in panic but it was too late.

Kael’s dagger sank into his gut with a sickening squelch. He twisted it, using the warrior’s body as a shield against two incoming spears—both stabbed into their comrade’s back, not Kael’s.

He used —Eclipse Step— mid-spin, vanishing and reappearing above another warrior. His blade came down in an arc—straight into the man’s shoulder joint. The warrior shrieked, fell, and didn’t get up—[EXP +1800].

The bears roared behind him, their massive bodies barreling through the underbrush. The earth shook with each step.

Kael didn’t stop moving.

He ducked under a slash, countered with a stab to the throat, rolled past a lunging spear, and kicked a warrior into a tree. Bone cracked on the bark. Another—[EXP +950].
