Chapter 34: Side Quest Completed

Kael’s expression hardened. He needed to break through Evelyne and Dorian to reach the royals, chained at the edge of the clearing with Garrick guarding them.

He vanished, his enhanced dexterity making him a blur. Reappearing behind Evelyne, he aimed his dagger at her neck. She spun, her sword blocking the strike, runes sparking.

The impact jarred Kael’s arm, but he pressed forward, kicking her knee. She stumbled, her runes dimming.

Dorian charged, his longsword slashing in a wide arc. Kael ducked, the blade grazing his shoulder, drawing fresh blood.

He rolled forward, springing up to face Dorian. "You should be ashamed of yourself. Needing the help of a girl to suppress someone nine levels below you," Kael said, his voice low. "Step aside."

Dorian laughed, disregarding Kael’s attempt to rile him up. His eyes gleamed with disdain. "A peasant giving orders? You’ll die a painful death." He thrust his sword, aura flaring.

Kael parried with his dagger, the clash sending sparks flying through the surroundings. The noble’s strength was overwhelming, pushing Kael back step by step.

Evelyne soon recovered, her sword glowing anew. "He’s mine!" she snarled, swinging her sword.

Kael leaped back, the runic explosion tearing through the ground, dirt and stones pelting him. He landed hard, his wounds screaming.

The timer blinked: [Option 3: Blood for Peace. Objective: Execute the royals. Time remaining: 00:03:33]

He had to move now.

Kael charged forward, feinting toward Evelyne before pivoting to Dorian. The noble raised his sword, but Kael was faster, his enhanced dexterity proving effective. He slipped past Dorian’s guard, driving his dagger into the noble’s side.

Dorian grunted, blood seeping through his golden armor. "You dare—!" he roared, rage building up slowly and he swung his long sword wildly.

Kael ducked, grabbing Dorian’s arm and hurling him into Evelyne.

The two collided, Evelyne’s runes flickering as she shoved Dorian aside. "Are you alright?" she asked only to receive a "Humph!" Dorian snorted, looking embarrassed.

Kael didn’t wait for them to regain their composure. He sprinted past them, his eyes locked on the faint glow of chains in the distance where the royals were held.

The timer ticked: [Option 3: Blood for Peace. Objective: Execute the royals. Time remaining: 00:01:12]

Dorian’s aura surged, his voice thundering. "You won’t escape!" He charged, his longsword slashing.

Kael slid under the strike, the blade grazing his back, blood dripping. He kept running, the chained royals now in sight—Garrick stood in front, guarding three figures slumped against a stone pillar, their regal clothes torn.

King Eldrin, Prince Dain, and Princess Elira, their faces were pale and eyes wide with fear as Kael approached.

Evelyne’s runes flared behind him, a wave of energy tearing through the air. Kael dove, the blast scorching his cloak.

He rolled to his feet, now only steps from the royals. Dorian was closing in, his sword raised. "You’ll die before you touch them!" he shouted.

Kael’s boots skidded across the blood-soaked dirt, his silver eyes locked on the chained royals. The timer burned in his vision: [Option 3: Blood for Peace. Objective: Execute the royals. Time remaining: 00:00:47]

"Fuck!" Kael cussed, he had less than a minute left...

King Eldrin, Prince Dain, and Princess Elira cowered against the stone pillar, their faces pale and eyes wide with dread. Garrick, the Crimson Knight, stood before them with his axes glowing with crimson fury and his scarred body pulsing with pain-fueled strength.

The air crackled with Evelyne’s runes and Dorian’s oppressive aura, their pursuit closing in fast.

Garrick’s manic grin widened, his axes raised. "Come on, boy! More blood!" he roared, charging like a beast. His massive frame shook the ground, his wounds glowing as his strength surged.

Kael cursed under his breath, his enhanced dexterity strained against the knight’s raw power. He couldn’t dodge forever—not with Dorian and Evelyne at his back and the timer ticking down.

Garrick’s axes swung in a deadly arc with one aimed at Kael’s chest and the other at his head. Kael’s mind raced. He couldn’t outrun the strike, but he could use it to his advantage.

Bracing himself, he leaned into the attack, letting the lower axe graze his ribs. Pain exploded from his side, blood spraying, but the impact’s momentum launched him forward, spinning past Garrick like a hurled spear. He landed hard, rolling toward the royals with his dagger clutched tight.

Garrick laughed, spinning to pursue, his axes raised for another strike. "Run all you want! I’ll carve you up!"

Kael ignored him, his focus on the royals. Now free from Lord Arid’s control, King Eldrin’s voice trembled, "Please, save us!" Princess Elira sobbed, her chains rattling. Prince Dain glared, silent but defiant.

Kael’s face was stone, his silver eyes cold as steel.

The timer ticked: [Time remaining: 00:00:17]

With no time for hesitation, Kael lunged, his dagger flashing.

The blade sliced King Eldrin’s throat, blood gushing as the king slumped in a pool of blood, his crown clattering to the ground.

"Noooooooooo!" Elira screamed but Kael’s dagger struck again, silencing her. Her body collapsed lifelessly against the chains. Dain spat, "You’ll burn in hell for this!" Kael’s blade ended him, blood pooling beneath the prince’s lifeless form.

The system chimed:

Five black knives in a utility belt materialized in Kael’s hand, their edges coated in a sickly green sheen, poison dripping faintly. A weight settled in his chest, but he had no time to dwell on it.

A surge of danger suddenly prickled his senses. Kael spun, but it was already too late. Dorian was there with his longsword piercing through the air, aimed straight for Kael’s heart.

The noble’s smirk widened, his golden armor gleaming as the blade inched closer. Time seemed to slow down, the sword’s tip glinting.

Dorian’s eyes burned with triumphant rage. "Die, insect," he hissed.

Kael’s dagger wouldn’t be able to block it in time, and his body was too battered to dodge. The blade was seconds from piercing his chest when—

FWOOSH!

The air whistled, a blazing arrow streaking through the clearing.
