Chapter 32: Against Time (II)

Kael’s body screamed in pain, but his will kept him standing. He could feel it—he was close to the tipping point.

The Knight Guards were stronger than him in terms of cultivation, but they were tiring. He wasn’t because of the high-quality essence he had been absorbing.

His Eldritch Devouring Bloodline fed on his opponent’s essence, their negative emotions, and their blood. He was growing stronger with every second.

He vanished again, reappearing behind Evelyne. She spun, her sword blocking his fist, but the impact forced her back. Kael pressed the attack, his strikes a blur.

Voss charged, but Kael sidestepped, tripping him into Garrick. Isolde tried to flank him, but Kael caught her dagger mid-strike, twisting it free from her hand and stabbing it into her thigh.

The clearing was chaos—blood, broken earth, and shattered runes. Dorian watched from the sidelines, his smirk completely gone and replaced by a flicker of unease.

He never thought that a day would come when he’d feel this way against a puny scion of a mere declining Count descent. The mere thought of having such a dangerous hanging blade roam untethered sent chills rolling down his spine.

"No... He must die" He muttered.

Kael stood amidst the carnage, his chest heaving, his body battered but unyielding. The Knight Guards regrouped, their faces grim.

Evelyne’s runes flared brighter, Voss’s shield glowed with renewed strength, Isolde’s daggers darkened, and Garrick’s laughter grew manic as his axes improved.

Kael cracked his knuckles, his silver eyes glowing. "Come on," he said, his voice low and deadly. "We’re just getting started. I can do this all day."

Although he said that, blood dripped from his torn cloak, staining the cracked earth beneath him. The clearing was a battlefield of shattered trees, scorched grass, and the faint hum of Evelyne’s runes lingering in the air.

Voss, Isolde, Garrick, and Evelyne pressed their assault, their synchronized attacks relentless. Kael’s body screamed with every movement, the cuts and bruises piling up faster than his regenerative ability could handle.

The Knight Guards were wearing him down, their higher cultivation levels and coordinated strikes overwhelming even his monstrous resilience.

The timer in his vision blinked: [Selection time frame ends in: 00:14:09]

He didn’t have time to hesitate. His mind raced, pulling up the system’s interface. A total of 15 Blood points he had earned from the essence of his fallen foes pulsed in his reserves.

Without a second thought, he allocated them: 5 to Strength, 3 to Dexterity, and 3 to Constitution.

A surge of power flooded his body, muscles tightening, senses sharpening, and stamina swelling. The gap between his Lvl 7 cultivation and their higher levels narrowed, if only slightly. His wounds still burned, but he felt lighter and stronger.

Evelyne’s sword slashed down, runes blazing with amplified force. Kael sidestepped, the blade carving a trench where he’d stood. He felt the difference immediately—his movements were crisper, his reactions faster.

Isolde darted in, her daggers trailing dark energy. Kael twisted, catching her wrist with one hand and driving his Abyssal Fang dagger into her side with the other.

The blade sank deep, dark blood spilling as her shadow form flickered and failed continuously.

Isolde gasped, her eyes wide with shock. "How—?" Her words cut off as Kael yanked the dagger free and kicked her backward. She hit the ground hard, clutching her side, struggling to rise.

The others froze for a heartbeat, stunned by the sudden fall of the Phantom Knight. Kael seized the moment. He lunged at Voss, who raised his rune-reinforced shield to block.

Kael’s enhanced strength surged, his fist glowing with devouring energy. He struck the shield dead-center. The runes cracked, then shattered, the impact sending Voss stumbling back, his massive frame trembling.

Garrick roared, charging with his axes blazing crimson. "You’ll pay for that!" His wounds glowed, fueling his berserker rage.

Kael ducked under a wild swing, the axe grazing his shoulder, drawing fresh blood. He countered with a brutal uppercut, his newfound strength snapping Garrick’s head back.

The Crimson Knight staggered, but his grin widened, his aura flaring brighter.

"Undying bastard!" Kael gritted his teeth hatefully.

"Focus!" Evelyne barked, her sword humming as she inscribed a new rune mid-air, sending a pulse of energy to reinforce Garrick’s axes. The blades grew heavier, their edges sharper.

Garrick swung again, faster this time, forcing Kael to leap back. The ground exploded where he’d stood, dirt and stone flying.

Kael’s eyes narrowed, tracking their movements. Isolde was down but not out yet as the Abyssal Fang dagger slowly devoured her energy. She crawled toward her daggers.

Voss was also recovering, his shield discarded but his fists clenched. Garrick was a wild card and the type Kael hated to fight against due to their ability of growing stronger with every wound.

And Evelyne—she was the linchpin, the heart of the group as her runes amplified the others’ power. He needed to break their formation.

He vanished, his enhanced dexterity making his movements a blur. Reappearing behind Isolde, he drove his dagger into her back, twisting it.

Her scream echoed, her body convulsing as the dark energy around her dissipated. She slumped forward lifelessly, blood pooling beneath her.

"Isolde!" Voss roared with rage, charging with his fists raised.

Kael rolled away, avoiding a crushing blow that splintered the ground. Garrick attacked from the side, his axes a whirlwind of crimson fury.

Kael ducked and weaved, his boosted agility barely keeping him ahead of the onslaught. An axe nicked his ribs, pain flaring, but his bloodline devoured it, converting the agony into strength.

Evelyne’s voice cut through the chaos. "Voss, pin him down! Garrick, finish it!" She swung her sword, a wave of runic energy tearing toward Kael. He dove to the side, the blast scorching his arm, leaving a blackened burn.

Voss closed in, his massive arms swinging like hammers. Kael dodged one blow, then another, but the third caught his chest, sending him skidding across the clearing.

Blood dripped from his mouth, his ribs aching.

The timer ticked: [Selection time frame ends in: 00:15:47]
