Edge of the Apocalypse -
Chapter 720: Insider
Frost Star.
Before dawn, Ned was already sitting in his office. Although the chaotic forces on the planet had been largely dispersed, the work of the base had not lessened much. There was still so much work to be done, such as seizing the snow crystal associated ores from the planet's natives, cleaning up the remaining Catu miscellaneous soldiers, and repairing the base. As the head of the base, Ned worked far more than an ordinary soldier.
When the short daylight finally arrived, the shouts of soldiers training sounded from the large playground of the base. Ned stood up and stretched his stiff body when the adjutant brought him a cup of coffee. "You should rest, sir."
"Now is not the time to relax, my friend." Ned smiled and said, "Although the Catus have left, we still have a lot of work to do. Look, there are at least three more crystal mines to be recaptured. But damn it, after Mr. Allen and the others leave, our small base is obviously not strong enough. It won't be a month before we can recapture these three crystal mines."
'"Sir, I don't think the crystal mine will grow legs. It will always be there. As for the headhunters, have you seen them mine for so many years? As far as I know, there shouldn't be any, so how many snow crystals should there be or how many will there be? It's just a matter of time before you regain the crystal mine. You can focus on other things first." The adjutant smiled.
Ned pointed at him with his finger and smiled, "Just say what you want. There's no need to make such a big circle."
"Alright, Old Locke actually asked me to come. There is a serious shortage of spare parts for some war chariots in the maintenance room. He wants you to take a look for yourself so that you can report a batch of new spare parts to the headquarters as soon as possible."
"There's such a thing." Ned frowned. The war chariot was an indispensable combat tool for the base. After the last war, many of them had been damaged and scrapped, while the number of people in the maintenance room was limited. The current rate of repair was not fast. Adding on the lack of spare parts, the base would probably have to wait for a while before it could regain its combat strength.
"I know." Ned walked towards the door and nodded to the brain on the table. "There are a few plans in there. Check them for me. If there are no mistakes, send them to the relevant department for me."
"Yes, sir."
After Ned left, the adjutant sat in his seat. The brain was open and ready for manipulation. It was rare to see such a situation. The base manager's brain had a security warrant. Only Ned knew that the warrant would be changed from time to time. Once on standby, re-entering the operating system requires entering the correct token. Ned didn't lock the screen for the adjutant's convenience. The adjutant's fingers fluttered, and the files opened in his eyes.
The smile on his face gradually disappeared, and the warmth in his eyes was replaced by coldness, as if his body was being controlled by another soul. Or perhaps, this was the original appearance of the adjutant. He was calm and clear-headed. He entered the orders one by one and searched through the vast archives in his brain according to his original plan. The progress bar continued to move forward. A moment later, a document popped up.
"Alright, let me see how you discovered the Chaos Canyon." The adjutant whispered as he opened the file. The first thing to come into view was a name, Alan!
This file contains all the records of Allen's identity token, be it text, images or videos, which can be found here. The ID token's A.I. Chip automatically categorizes the records of the day on a daily basis in the program settings. Of these records, however, one day is clearly missing. The adjutant frowned. This was obviously the result of artificial deletion.
He quickly took out a small drive from his pocket, inserted it into the brain interface, and called up another program to repair the deleted records. While waiting for the program to repair the records, the adjutant would occasionally come to the window to take a look. Suddenly, he saw Ned walk back to the command building and hurriedly return to the table. The progress shown on the screen was approaching 100%, and sweat began to drip down the adjutant's forehead. He tapped the table with his finger and calculated in his mind when Ned might arrive at the office.
After more than ten seconds, the progress was finally completed. A deleted folder appears in the window. The adjutant taps out a new command with a steady finger to cut the folder and transfer it to his drive. Then he quickly retracts it and closes the opened windows one by one. As soon as it was done, the automatic door to the office opened. Ned walked in and said, "Looks like we really need to declare a new batch of parts."
The adjutant said calmly, "What did Old Locke say?"
"The old man is furious." Ned said with a bitter face, "He complained to me that he hasn't slept for a few hours a day and he hasn't had enough parts, which makes him work badly. This old Locke is also a workaholic."
"He's always been like this."
"How about those plans?"
"It's already been sent."
"Very good, then. There's nothing else to do here. If you have anything to do …"
The adjutant smiled and said, "I want to take a look at the warehouse."
"Go."
After leaving the command building, the adjutant arrived at the warehouse. He took an electronic list from the warehouse manager and went to the material warehouse to count it. A moment later, a soldier used a retractor to put several boxes on the shelves. The height of the box was clearly higher, blocking a nearby camera. The adjutant did not look, but took out the drive and threw it to the soldier. "Take this to the butcher and tell him to hand it over to General Shrek personally."
The soldier put away the drive without a scratch, and the supervisor shouted through the warehouse announcement, "Jerry, what the hell are you doing, blocking Camera 3!"
"Take it down now." The soldier replied, then nodded to the adjutant. Then, the two of them were busy with their own business, as if they had never talked to each other before.
In the evening, two tactical flying vehicles left the base. They were responsible for night patrols, but one of them was far away from the base. However, there was no record of the flying car in the movement records. Ned's lieutenant had always verified the dispatch records, so Ned naturally didn't know if the lieutenant didn't say anything.
Eighteen hours later, the small drive was placed in front of a man's desk. The swivel chair twisted and he turned around. However, there was no light in the room, only the light of the brain. The screen illuminated the man's upper body, while the area above his neck was hidden in the shadows. However, the light still illuminated the General Star on his shoulder, and the two five-pointed silver stars revealed his identity as a major general.
He inserted the drive into his brain and extracted a file from it. There were several video files in the file, and the man opened them one by one, so the whole process from Alan's discovery of the convoy to leaving the Chaos Canyon was faithfully played back in the man's eyes.
The man fell silent, his gaze fixed on Allen's name and lingered on the name for a long time. "Beth Cod, it's so troublesome. It has something to do with Horn."
He sighed, turned off the recording, and initiated a call request through an encrypted channel. Ten seconds later, the request passed and a window popped up on the screen. A figure flashed through the window and the general said in a deep voice, "I just discovered something rather troublesome. I need you to decide for yourself, Your Excellency."
"Sounds really troublesome. What is it?"
'"Not long ago on Frost Planet, there was some trouble with Bula's operation. Their whereabouts were discovered, and that person wiped out Bula's elite squad afterwards and retreated. A few days later, someone from the Hunting Group on Frost Planet reported information about the Chaos Canyon. Only then did the counterattack plan begin."
"So?"
"The man's name is Allen, and he's from Beth Cod. Because of the coincidence of time, I made some necessary investigations. As I expected, the young master of Bescot broke through Bu Xing's operation, and judging from his request to the director of Castellan Rock Base to delete the record, he clearly knew what Bu La and the others were doing. "Then, my lord, I wonder how you will deal with this'insider '?"
'"I say, Shrek, you're really going to give me a hard time. Alan Bescord, what a headache. But since he could threaten our very existence, you should know that it's written very clearly in our operation manual, how should we deal with threats?"
The general nodded and said, "I understand. I just need to confirm with you personally. After all, this will probably provoke Old Horn. That person is also a legend."
"The reason why we are called Legends is because we are the past, and we are the future. So you can go ahead and do whatever you want. All the officers at the field level are at your disposal. If necessary, you can fight in person, and I will help you deal with the aftermath."
"Thank you very much." The general paused for a moment and said, "One last question. What should the director of Castellan Base do with it?"
'"Since he is involved, naturally he can't escape unscathed. Those who know the secret, no matter how firm their mouths are, will one day be unable to help but reveal it. There are no people in this world who keep their mouths shut. If there are, then there will only be dead people. Are you right, General?"
Before the general could reply, the communication ended. The general was silent for a moment before he said to the communicator on the desk, "Call Rice over."
A moment later, a man entered the room. As soon as he entered, the air seemed to have a sweet smell, as if the smell of blood was floating in the air. Looking at the man in front of the desk, the general turned the screen. On the screen was a picture of Allen, and the general said, "This man must die."
"My sword is at your disposal, sir. But you have to tell me, where is he?"
"Garden of Eden."
"Then, he's dead. In the name of Bloodthirsty Rice, I assure you."
The general nodded. "It's best if you bring enough men. I don't want to see any words related to failure."
