Chapter 66: Light to His Darkness
Chapter 66: Light to His Darkness
Watching them struggle to start the conversation, Aveline signalled a maid to clean up the counter, hugged two of the columns, and carried them to the living hall.
Charles took the tallest column and followed behind her.
Once the three columns were on the wall table, she added a candle and a small figurine to complete the look.
Then she sat down, watching the three of them still on their feet. "You’re uncomfortable. And making me uncomfortable too." She finally broke the silence.
Margaret sat beside Aveline and gently held her hand. Aveline spoke before her mother could start, "You don’t have to be apologetic, Mom. I know you wish nothing but the best for me." Though Margaret could be controlling and specific. Aveline was always aware of how much her mother loved her.
Margaret nodded, feeling emotional. "We should have heard you. Not rushed you into a whirlwind arrangement. "
Maybe then Aveline would have seen the red flags. Maybe then Henry would have gotten true reports on Damien. Maybe then, they could have escaped all this.
Aveline knew she could have backed out if she had set her mind to it. But she fell into Damien’s trap, just like them, and agreed to the wedding.
"Mom," She said gently, "Let’s focus on the present, the future, and our health."
Margaret nodded again, this time with a steadier breath.
Aveline turned to her brother and narrowed her eyes, "I’m not telling you anymore secrets. And I’m not having an affair." She sounded more like a grumpy sister than anything else.
Margaret, Henry, and Charles: "..."
Charles shook his head in resignation. His sister was going to hold on to this grudge for a long time.
Still, he added what he had learned, "I hung out with some of the heirs last night. No one knows Damien is married. Everyone has seen him with Vivienne Sinclair, a model, former ambassador."
How he wished he had asked around back then instead of just burying himself in company affairs to let Henry focus on wedding preparations.
"He is notorious." Charles added, "Ambitious. Shady deals behind closed doors."
Henry realized why Charles met the group of heirs. Everyone was blaming themselves for Aveline’s situation, including himself.
He tried to ease them, "Damien paid the men to give me false reports."
Henry didn’t show them mercy. They were behind bars for violating someone’s privacy. He didn’t feel the necessity to mention it to Aveline.
From the look on his face, Aveline understood. Her father was dealing with Damien in his way and didn’t interfere with Damien by respecting her words.
She stood, grabbing their attention. "I’m sorry, Mom, Dad, Bro. I shouldn’t have been rude." Her voice softened.
Then she looked at her mother, "Mom, please focus on your health and look pretty for Dad. Or maybe... teach me to cook. Ah... only simple cooking," she added with a mock wince. "I’ve realized I don’t like it."
Everyone: "..."
Then to Charles, "My dear brother, focus on getting a girlfriend. Maybe someone who doesn’t know your last name. And also, run the company." Because their father will be busy.
Then she tugged Henry to stand and hooked her arm through his, "Dad, let’s go out on a date."
Margaret and Charles: "..."
Wasn’t she too energetic?
But that was her. Cheerful and optimistic. That was the Aveline they knew.
Henry knew she wanted to talk in private. She was sparing Charles and Margaret from getting worked up. So he agreed.
...
An art gallery,
Aveline took him to a private gallery that was closed to the public on their arrival. She took the stickers from the attendant and sent him away, leaving just the two of them inside the massive, two-story space.
"Lina..." Henry couldn’t wait anymore.
And why were they in an art gallery?
"Dad, I’m sure you handled the men who gave you the false reports. I need you to keep going from there. Stay invisible. Maybe go on a business trip or a vacation... but keep chipping away at Damien’s foundation, and his connections."
Henry relaxed when she let him do something instead of shutting him away. But leaving Velmora? "I can’t leave you here alone."
Aveline placed a sticker beside a painting, "You won’t be leaving me alone, Dad." She pointed her chin at the painting, "Is it good enough to hide the camera?"
Henry realized why they were in an art gallery. But it only made him worry more, "You’re going back to Sterling villa?"
He was barely holding himself together already. How could he stay sane if she lived with that man?
"Lina, he will hurt you."
Why did he know she was so daring?
Aveline took his hand, "Dad, you should be worried about how to get me out of prison if I kill him. Not the other way around." Her voice was deadly calm.
Henry didn’t flinch hearing it from her mouth, "Do it." He said, "I can handle the rest."
Aveline chuckled. She had no intention of becoming a murderer. But if the situation demanded it, she would protect herself.
Aveline pulled out a paper from her bag and handed it to him. "These are his shell companies. He needs billions of dollars for his project. He’s going to lead as the largest investor."
Henry took a look at the names on the paper and slipped it into his pocket to focus on her.
Before her regression, Damien had become the CEO as soon as he presented the project and the investment plan to the board of Ashford Holdings.
"We have three months to drain his account. We’ll promise him the land verbally and ask him to get the project vetted."
If Damien rose too high, it would be even more difficult to tackle him.
Thinking, Henry was quiet for some time. Then his lips curled into a sly smile. "I know what to do, Lina." He wasn’t going to hold back.
Aveline smiled too. It was Alaric’s suggestion to let Henry work in the shadows while she dragged Damien through the mess.
"Divorce!?" Henry probed hesitantly.
"As soon as I have control," Aveline assured him.
Then the father and daughter nagged each other and spent millions of dollars on paintings to redecorate the Sterling villa.
....
At night, Blackwood residence,
Aveline entered, laughing at one of her father’s silly jokes about her mother, when her phone buzzed.
[Ms. Smartyskirts, your traps triumphed.]
She giggled reading ’Smartyskirts’ instead of Smartypants.
And with her laughter, the happiness returned to the Laurent family.
Later that night, curiosity for the better of her. Grabbing her mobile from the bedside table, she dialed, "Are they caught?"
[Dialing a single man at night, what’s your intention, Sunshine?] He teased her.
Lightheaded, smiling, Aveline responded softly, "To bring light to your darkness." And then she giggled.
Before the teasing smirk on his face could turn into something softer, she yawned and slipped into her dreamland.
