Chapter 93 – What Fear Brings

There were two things they needed to find in Bey World.

One was the whereabouts of the missing Captain Adonis.

The other was the location of the rabbit mask—the root of this incident.

Jhin was convinced that the missing captain had to be inside this "Nighttime Bey World."

Otherwise, there was no way he’d know about the Goblin Orb.

So the group began moving in earnest, avoiding clusters of monsters as they started a full search of Bey World.

The plan was to catch both targets at once: the missing captain and the rabbit mask.

But then, a monster appeared—rising up from the ground before them—and Jhin was forced to swallow a sigh.

What had been a vague, ominous feeling was now proven real.

It had only been a theory. Just a guess.

"It really is caused by fear, huh," he muttered.

"...Urgh, I’m sorry," said Luke .

The monster that appeared was a massive centipede.

Its appearance was revolting, grotesque at first glance. The kind of thing that could crawl into your nightmares.

This was a monster born from Luke ’s fear.

"Luke ... this is yours?"

"Yes. When I was little, my father used to lock me in a box as punishment. There were always centipedes inside."

The explanation was oddly detailed and personal—more than anyone needed to know—but no one was paying attention.

The centipede was already spraying venom as it approached.

KIIIIIK!

A giant centipede—commonly referred to as a "King Centipede."

Its size was so absurd that, even though it wasn’t very fast, it still managed to quickly close in on their position.

Jhin immediately gave orders as they scattered.

"Its weak point is the roof of its mouth! Aim there and it’ll go down fast!"

The King Centipede was a level-100 monster typically found in D-rank dungeons.

It looked threatening due to its sheer size, but it wasn’t particularly tricky to handle.

Of course, the weak point—its upper palate—was buried deep between its sharp fangs, and stabbing it directly wasn’t exactly easy.

But that was fine.

They had Millie—their sharpshooter.

As her gun barrel lit up, a burst of magic bullets tore through the centipede’s body.

More shots followed, punching holes into its head until the massive creature collapsed, limp.

Jhin looked over at Luke , who was sweating coldly.

"You okay?"

"...Y-yeah!"

Watching him tremble in front of the monster’s corpse, it was hard to believe this guy was once a rich punk.

These days, he looked at Jhin with nothing but awe, spoke to him respectfully, and now stood there shaking like a leaf.

It was honestly just kind of sad.

Jhin gave him a shrug and moved on.

Millie, meanwhile, was eyeing the crowd of monsters being drawn in by the fallen centipede.

"This won’t end at this rate."

Jhin nodded.

"There are too many monsters. We’ll wear out first."

The current state of Bey World resembled a dungeon on the verge of a break.

Monsters were everywhere—like weeds growing between your steps.

Just from the ones drawn in by the King Centipede, there were already over ten.

"And the real problem isn’t the number," he said.

If it were just about quantity, they wouldn’t be struggling this much.

The reason their movements kept getting slower and they kept wearing down was something else entirely.

"There are too many different kinds of monsters all packed together."

You needed a different strategy for kobolds than for orcs or ogres.

Like how aiming for the centipede’s mouth made it easy to kill.

Each monster had its own data and mechanics—and now there were too many to apply that knowledge all at once.

A huge monster like the centipede had wide attack arcs.

But then there were kobolds and orcs—smaller, more agile creatures with completely different traits.

Trying to handle them all at once? That was asking for a headache.

Jhin turned to Millie.

"Have you figured out what monster you were most afraid of?"

"...I’ve thought about it. There are a few."

"Yeah...?"

"But they’re all over level 300."

Honestly, this was the real issue.

Luke had only raised his character to around level 100.

Millie, though? She had reached rank 12.

A high-level player like her could imagine monsters that made the King Centipede look like a toy.

Jhin ’s brow furrowed and didn’t smooth out.

’There are probably monsters created because of me, too.’

As the number one ranked player, Jhin had fought and seen more monsters than anyone.

If he had to pick the worst among them... he could probably name a dozen just off the top of his head.

Damn it.

’They probably won’t appear at full strength, though.’

As far as he could remember, Exodia wasn’t the kind of game to throw fully powered high-level monsters at you out of nowhere.

But their traits? Those were probably intact.

And even that might be too much to handle.

High-level monsters were high-level for a reason.

They had few weaknesses and needed specific tactics or rare items to defeat.

In higher-tier dungeons, it was standard to build entire parties around those fights—with proper equipment and roles tailored to the enemy.

"Still... let’s hang in there. The rabbit mask must be somewhere in Bey World."

Pushing aside his anxiety, Jhin refocused on the mission.

The never-ending waves of monsters.

There was still only one real way out of this mess.

Take the Goblin Orb.

Only then could they begin the true conquest of this space.

But positive thinking alone wasn’t enough to turn the tide.

No matter how stealthily they moved, they were surrounded on all sides by monsters.

The constant battles were wearing them down.

And then, what they feared most appeared.

Jhin muttered under his breath.

"That guy... he’s an NPC, isn’t he?"

A man stood before them—long sword in hand, sharp snake-like eyes glaring their way.

Jhin recognized him immediately.

It was Cramp , a noble NPC who had caused all sorts of problems in Exodia1.

He had a history of clashing with players, but as far as Jhin recalled, he was never categorized as a monster.

Millie spoke up.

"Ugh. That one’s probably my fault. He looks like the stalker who used to follow me around. I hated him."

"..."

"So I guess not just monsters are showing up, huh."

A creepy obsessive fan who had once followed her relentlessly.

He had eventually faced legal consequences—and the case had made headlines.

Jhin remembered it too.

"...Yeah. The resemblance is... spot on."

Millie tried to hide her expression as she spoke again.
