Chapter 104: Cake and Bread
The garlic bread was in the oven, and I was preparing to tell Maximilian that, as much as it flattered me to be his crush, he really should go.
Then, the man just began to look at my pantry.
"I have this craving," he already told me that he knew that my mind rune was cheap. I could bet my arm that he was already thinking about quinoa.
Because Desmond, bless his heart, couldn’t even eat buckwheat. He was so sensitive, that if he ate more than a bite, he had an upset stomach...
That was why I was sending the garlic bread to Pan! He would never share with Desmond, I was sure.
He was responsible like that!
"This craving for something sweet, but easy," he took hold of the special Pancake Mix Nate supplied me with! The one Desmond could eat, because it was gluten-free!
Now...
I had no idea what was in it. The pancakes turned out just fine, even without milk. Sure, closer to crepes than to pancakes, but they at least smelt nice.
Not to mention...
If he could make the perfect fluffy gluten-free pancakes, I was going to marry him. I’m not going to lie.
He took a sieve and began to sieve the flour inside a bowl. So far, so good, I told myself.
Then he dumped a handful of blueberries inside the bowl. I smiled. Oh! He was a traditionalist!
"Do you have coconut milk?" He asked, not looking at me. I was impressed! Man, he was good at reading minds!
"Yeah, the third shelf in the back," he walked inside my walk-in pantry.
Most people have walk-in closets. For clothes, for jewelry, for shoes.
Heck, some even have them for their bags.
But I had a walk-in pantry! Because those are cool!
He came out with a handful of stuff, looked at me, smirked, and then was enveloped by a barrier!
I snorted, looking at the oven.
The cave smelt of butter and garlic.
Joy, in other words. I had no idea what he was going to do in Nate’s corner of the kitchen, but I knew that the tree was going to attract tourists!
The tourists...
More of them have been coming into my dungeon. These days, they paid one silver coin per week. The only thing I needed to do was to feed and water them.
One might think, well, that’s a shitty deal, Sylvan! You are being robbed!
Nah, my man. I am not!
These tourists, who come to my dungeon to get healed from this or that, are giving me mana.
I had more mana than I knew what to do with. A nice barrier, powered by me and outfitted with runes by Nick, was protecting the Forest of Forget-Me-Nots and the surrounding areas.
The lands of the human and gnome villages were kept fertile by even more mana. Oh, I knew that Bob, the gnome chief, was not going to forgive me soon, but keeping his people from starving now was a good first step on my part.
Even if the only thing they could grow right now was salad greens.
Anne and Granny Almira were off in the forest, tending to the tourists.
I guess that the girls could watch me cook for so long before they decided that I was getting repetitive.
As for Mael and Nara, well...
The fighting was tough. I worry for them.
They had been promoted five times already for their fighting prowess, but I was still worried.
Oh, I know! I’ll send them the garlic bread!
And some healing mushroom sauce to go with it! Oh, I need more garlic bread!
But I didn’t have enough bread.
No, what I had was flour and water. I looked at the barrier that kept Nate’s part of the kitchen away from my sight.
With a sigh, I stood up. The garlic bread took another two minutes. I had time!
It was just me walking in there, grabbing the yeast, and then going out!
Easy!
I might as well have been on my tiptoes, so quiet I was. Without a word, I passed by the barrier, walked inside of my walk-in pantry, and then took some dried yeast!
And some bags...
For you see there is a trick to making bread quickly. A trick I learned from a baker!
All one needed was one of those super expensive mana bags. But the thing about being married to Nick was that I got them for free!
I needed something that was low-effort and fast!
Maximilian was still in his corner of the kitchen, doing God knew what. But the smell coming from there told me that he had conquered the challenge!
But I had to concentrate!
Seeing as this was for the soldiers, I just used normal flour placing it in the bag. Then, right on top of the flour I placed the salt.
What followed was me sealing the bag shut with a bit of mana and then mixing everything by pressing and shaking!
A nice towel ended up wrapped around the bag, and I grabbed another one! In about an hour and a half, I knew I was going to have dough!
I could turn the dough into bread, and then into garlic bread!
"Man, now that was what I was talking about," he was holding a cake! A cake that smelt divine!
Wait... but he made it with pancake mix...?
Right?
"Do you need a helping hand?" He asked, smirking.
I pouted. What kind of man was he, to think about that as we baked?
"Baking is sacred!" I snapped at him. "Sacred, I tell you! You have to be pure of mind! Or the baking won’t be pure and good when it is done cooking!"
He just shrugged.
"Oh, if you only knew what I was thinking about as I made this," he placed the cake on the teleportation rune meant for Desmond! Desmond was going to eat it for sure! "You wouldn’t be saying that. Now, in which rune should I put the rest?"
"Was it gluten-free?" I asked, jumping to my feet.
My Desmond-pooh was in danger!
"Yes, just this one. The other ones are not," he took hold of my hand, leading me to his corner of the kitchen.
There on the counter was a tree-layer monstrosity with enough cream to make me sick. But I guessed that Brandon wouldn’t complain.
And next to it...
"Love you, Mortimer! From: Dad."
A simple vanilla cake with words I never told my youngest.
I bowed my head.
