"Has the student representative for the opening ceremony been decided?"
"Shen You’an. There’s no one more suitable than her."
"I don’t think that’s appropriate."
Shen Huailu frowned. "Does the group have a better candidate in mind?"
"Didn’t you receive the latest list of new students?"
Shen Huailu glanced at the freshman list sprawled on the table. "So what?"
"Lanya Group spared no expense to recruit Gu Bichen from Jingzhou and Yan Lu from Spring City. Both are this year’s top scorers in their respective provinces. Especially this Gu student—he won gold medals in both the middle school math and physics competitions, setting records. Earlier this year, he also took second place in the CC Computer Competition. Not to mention his achievements in art competitions. He’s one of Jingzhou City’s ten outstanding youth pioneers and even shot the city’s promotional video. He not only excels academically but also has quite the appearance. Considering the group’s image, I believe Gu Bichen is more suitable to serve as the freshman representative speaker."
Shen Huailu listened to the torrent of words, remained silent for a moment, and then suddenly spoke. "All that was stuff Shen mastered back in elementary school. Group image considerations? Isn’t this just because he’s good-looking? Shen doesn’t look bad either. You’re supposed to be in the education sector. Ever heard of appearance-based discrimination?"
"Besides, no matter how exceptional Gu Bichen is, he wasn’t nurtured by the Lanya Group. Once he graduates and walks out the door, could you blame him for not being grateful? Shen, on the other hand, is someone we’ve all watched grow up. There’s a different level of affection there."
"Director Shen, I’m calling to inform you, not to discuss this with you."
"Well, I don’t agree. Fire me if you want, find someone else. I’m done."
After cursing, Shen Huailu hung up the phone, frustratedly fanning himself with his hand.
Lanya Group certainly had deep pockets, but its flaws were evident. They had too much of that capitalist mindset, always prioritizing benefits and insisting on their way.
As soon as the freshman list landed on his desk, Shen Huailu had gone through it.
That Gu Bichen was indeed outstanding—truly outstanding. He was in no way inferior to Shen. But so what?
He was still like someone else’s kid; no matter how brilliant, he wouldn’t end up in their bowl. Shen, on the other hand, was like family—their child. To them, Shen was perfect in every way.
Who would abandon their own child to take care of someone else’s? Even if the latter lived temporarily under their roof, could they ever compare to the one they’d raised since birth?
Shen Huailu was firm in his disagreement, and there wasn’t much the group could do on their side.

In the western suburbs of Jingzhou, within an expansive estate.
On a second-floor balcony, a young man leaned against the railing, taking a call from Lanya Group’s secretariat.
The young man raised an eyebrow slightly, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "Got it, thank you for letting me know."
After hanging up, he murmured a name, rolling it delicately over his tongue. There was a hint of tender emotion in his tone.
"Shen You’an..."
How intriguing. He couldn’t wait.
"Young Master," a servant knocked at the door.
"Come in," he replied.
The servant pushed open the door but did not step inside, standing respectfully by the entryway instead. "Miss Xingshuang heard that you’ll be leaving for Qingzhou tomorrow and came specifically to see you off. Madam Gu also invites you downstairs."
"Understood. I’ll change and come down."
Downstairs in the living room, warmth and harmony filled the air.
"Grandma Gu, I read online that Qingzhou is a poor and remote place, far from Jingzhou. Why send Bichen to study there? Jingzhou has the best educational resources—it doesn’t make sense to go that far," asked Leng Xingshuang.
Elder Mrs. Gu chuckled, patting Leng Xingshuang’s hand. "Lanya Group is renowned nationwide. Their director personally came to the house and spared no effort to invite your Bichen. You know his personality—it thrives on challenges. Lanya High School gathers brilliant minds. How could he resist?"
Leng Xingshuang lowered her head, a little crestfallen. "If only I were smarter, I could’ve gotten into Lanya High School and studied with Bichen."
Soon, her face lit up with smug pride again. "But even among geniuses, Bichen will shine as the genius among geniuses. No one can compare to him."
"Thank you, little sister," said Gu Bichen as he descended the stairs in casual attire.
Leng Xingshuang clasped her face, her eyes sparkling like stars.
Elder Mrs. Gu looked at her grandson with eyes full of pride and satisfaction.
"Bichen, Awu and the others found out you’re leaving and arranged a farewell party for you. Join us for some fun, will you?" she asked.
Elder Mrs. Gu laughed. "Don’t worry about this old lady. Go have fun with your friends. Just make sure you’re home tonight—your parents are coming back tomorrow morning to personally see you off to the airport."
