Chapter 105: 055 I admire the strong and I like Shen You’an

"What’s going on with Yunqi? Why did she take leave?"

In the south cafeteria, Dai Niantong sat down across from Zheng Jinghan with her meal tray.

Zheng Jinghan shook her head, "I don’t know either. I’ve tried calling her, but her phone has been off. I hope nothing happened."

The three of them had been close friends since childhood. Later, during middle school entrance exams, Dai Niantong and Zheng Jinghan were admitted to Lanya Middle School, but Luuo Yunqi only managed to get in this year after barely passing the high school entrance exam.

"What could have possibly happened to her? She’s probably gone crazy playing around in Chunzhou and doesn’t want to come back. With her grades, I bet she’ll be eliminated after the beginning-of-term assessment," Dai Niantong said mercilessly.

She and Zheng Jinghan had spent the summer in cram school, previewing their first-year high school courses and preparing for another push forward.

Here, there were no public school policies to protect students’ emotions by withholding grades or rankings. On the contrary, class placement was determined by rankings.

First-year classes were divided into twelve sections across three tiers: Class A to D, Class E to H, and Class I to L. Class A was the highest "Rocket Class," a gathering of prodigies taught by elite teachers who represented the best resources of the school group.

Class L, on the other hand, was the bottom tier. Half of the students were from outside schools like Luuo Yunqi, just barely scraping in and at risk of being eliminated.

But Luuo Yunqi thought that as long as she got into Lanya High School, she could relax, or perhaps she had an overly inflated confidence in her own abilities.

As soon as summer vacation started, she went traveling, judging by her social media posts—living it up every day and completely unconcerned.

Dai Niantong had secretly made a bet with Zheng Jinghan, wagering that Luuo Yunqi wouldn’t last two months at Lanya High School before leaving in disgrace.

Outsiders only saw the halo of prestige surrounding the students here: glamorous appearances, chauffeured luxury cars. They didn’t know how brutal and merciless the competition was.

Back in middle school, both of them had once been so overwhelmed and crushed they considered suicide, even standing on the rooftop at one point. In the end, fear held them back from jumping.

Later, they gritted their teeth and pushed through, surviving day by day.

It was undoubtedly the darkest period of their lives, but both understood that even darker times were ahead.

Here was destined to be more brutal, more merciless than middle school ever was.

They couldn’t compare with the brilliant prodigies; all they could do was fight tooth and nail to make it into Class E—already the limit for ordinary folks like them.

Beyond that point, success depended on talent. No amount of hard work would suffice.

Sometimes, certain limits simply couldn’t be surpassed. It was what it was, and there was no way around it.

Zheng Jinghan sighed, "We should have invited her to the cram school back then."

Dai Niantong scoffed, "Even if we had, she wouldn’t have come."

The two exchanged a knowing look, certain shared understandings unspoken.

"Fancy meeting you again," Yan Lu said with a playful smile, sitting down next to Dai Niantong.

Dai Niantong frowned, "Aren’t you in Class A?"

Yan Lu shrugged, "For now, you two are the only ones I know in the whole school. Don’t you enjoy being my friends?"

The girl blinked her big eyes, her dimples cheeky and charming, making rejection nearly impossible.

"Of course," Dai Niantong responded with a smile.

At least she was a top scorer, someone worth learning from.

Yan Lu took two bottles of Yakult out of her pocket and placed them in front of the pair, "These are for you."

"Thanks," Zheng Jinghan said. She quite liked Yan Lu; her personality was refreshingly straightforward.

"Since I’m new here, I might need your guidance in the future. Hopefully, you won’t find me annoying."

Dai Niantong glanced at her, "You already saw it this morning; how does Class A feel to you?"

Yan Lu thought for a moment, "A bit different from what I imagined."

"Before coming here, I thought all the students would be serious scholars, but turns out, even geniuses can be refined and stylish."

"Exactly. After all, they’re all born under a lucky star," Dai Niantong said with a sour tone.

Good family backgrounds were one thing, but even their intelligence started ahead of the game.

How were ordinary people like them supposed to survive?

"But Shen You’an is an exception. She doesn’t come from some wealthy family. Her parents were ordinary folks and have been gone for years. Especially her mother—there’s something wrong with her," Dai Niantong said, tapping her temple meaningfully.

Yan Lu raised her brows, "Really? Then Shen You’an seems quite pitiful."

"Pitiful?" Dai Niantong reacted as if she’d heard a joke.

"She’s eating on the government’s dime, isn’t she? It’s not like she doesn’t have a good father," Dai Niantong retorted, clearly unimpressed.

"You two seem to have strong opinions about Shen," Yan Lu asked with a mischievous smile.
