Chapter 394: Black-scaled Serpent Woman
After dealing with the zombie, Xiao Feng cautiously stepped further into the convenience store, his senses alert to any signs of danger. The air was heavy with the musty smell of decay and abandonment, mixed with a faint metallic tang from spilled food cans and broken packaging. The store was dimly lit, the flickering emergency lights casting eerie shadows across the aisles.
The once-organized shelves were now chaotic and half-empty, with products strewn haphazardly across the floor. Aisle after aisle showed signs of looting; some shelves were overturned, their contents spilled and trampled underfoot. Broken glass crunched under Xiao Feng’s boots as he moved, a stark reminder of the chaos that had ensued in this place.
"The place has been picked clean," Xiao Feng muttered to himself, disappointment evident in his voice. His eyes scanned the shelves, hoping against hope to find even a crumb of food or a drop of water that might have been overlooked.
As he continued his search, Xiao Feng noticed the shattered remains of the checkout counter. It had been smashed open, likely in a desperate attempt to find supplies. The drawers were pulled out and empty, their contents stolen long ago.
Walking deeper into the store, Xiao Feng’s ears picked up a faint rustling sound, a stark contrast to the oppressive silence that had filled the store moments ago. He tensed, his hand tightening around the crowbar, ready to defend himself against any threat.
Continuing to walk inside, Xiao Feng suddenly saw a trembling figure.
"Who’s there?"
Xiao Feng shouted sternly, instinctively swinging his crowbar.
But just as he was about to strike, he noticed that it was a young girl huddled in the corner.
A girl around seventeen or eighteen years old, looking at Xiao Feng with frightened, pitiful eyes.
"Little sister?"
Out of pity and compassion for the weak, Xiao Feng immediately stopped.
The girl was trembling all over, hiding in the corner, too scared to come out.
Xiao Feng put away the crowbar and extended his right hand.
Slowly, the girl’s emotions began to calm down.
Tentatively, she reached out her hand as well.
But at that moment, Xiao Feng suddenly remembered something.
He quickly withdrew his hand.
Just then, the girl’s right hand suddenly turned into a black snake, coiling towards Xiao Feng.
Xiao Feng suddenly remembered that he was the only human in this world, so it was impossible for anyone else to be here.
Bang!
He swung the crowbar in his left hand hard.
The black snake-like hand was easily deflected.
"Hiss!"
Immediately, the girl began to change, her skin turning black and covered with tiny scales the size of fingernails.
Her hands were long and flexible like black snakes, dancing in the air.
She looked at Xiao Feng warily.
Focusing, the information about this creature instantly appeared in his mind.
[Tark Star: Black Scaled Snake Woman]
[Level: 1]
[Ability: Camouflage]
Watching the Black Scaled Snake Woman cautiously, Xiao Feng began to slowly retreat.
Her green eyes were full of confusion and wariness.
The next moment, to Xiao Feng’s surprise, the Black Scaled Snake Woman spoke in a language he could understand.
"Your way of speaking is strange. Are you from Blue Star? Is Blue Star fun?" she asked with an innocent curiosity, like a young girl who had never been out in the world.
Xiao Feng gradually let his guard down. "Hello!" he tentatively greeted her.
"Hel...lo?" The Black Scaled Snake Woman echoed.
"What is this place? Why am I here?"
"I don’t know either!" Xiao Feng shook his head.
The Black Scaled Snake Woman seemed to have no guard against Xiao Feng. She walked over quite openly.
"There’s a voice inside me that told me I got the ability to disguise myself! I can disguise myself as any creature I see and also acquire their language!"
Xiao Feng suddenly thought of a plan. There were many kinds of creatures in this world, so why not keep this Black Scaled Snake Woman by his side to act as his translator?
Looking around, Xiao Feng suddenly saw a can lying in the corner. He picked it up and found it was a product from China.
Suddenly, Xiao Feng remembered something. Every creature that came here would appear in an environment familiar to them. This was a city, in the post-apocalyptic era. Was the Black Scaled Snake Woman’s previous living environment similar?
"Where did you come from?" Xiao Feng asked.
"I walked for a long time. After coming out of the dark forest, I ended up here!" The Black Scaled Snake Woman replied weakly.
"The dark forest?" Xiao Feng’s curiosity was piqued. "What’s it like there?"
The Black Scaled Snake Woman’s eyes darkened with memory. "The dark forest is a place of eternal twilight. The trees are so tall and thick that sunlight barely reaches the ground. The air is always damp and cold, filled with the sounds of creatures that hunt in the shadows. It’s a dangerous place, where the weak don’t survive for long."
She paused, her gaze distant. "I lived there with others like me. We learned to hide, to disguise ourselves as other creatures to avoid being hunted. But it was never safe. Predators were always lurking, always ready to pounce. One day, I decided to leave. I walked for days, maybe weeks, until I found myself here."
Xiao Feng felt a chill run down his spine. He realized that this world was much more dangerous and complicated than he initially thought. Nonetheless, he decided to keep her close, as she could be a valuable ally.
"How about you stay with me from now on? It’s not safe here; it’s very dangerous. I can protect you!" he offered.
"Yes, yes! Sure!" The Black Scaled Snake Woman nodded repeatedly.
"But... I’m so hungry!"
"There’s food here!" Xiao Feng said, holding up the can.
"Can this be eaten?" The Black Scaled Snake Woman asked in confusion.
"We used to eat our own kind. What about you?"
Xiao Feng paused for a moment, then remembered the mention of Blue Star. "Blue Star... it was my home. It used to be a beautiful planet, full of life and technology. Cities that reached for the sky, vast oceans teeming with life, and forests that stretched as far as the eye could see. But things changed. A catastrophe struck, and now it’s all gone. The cities are in ruins, the oceans are empty, and the forests are just ashes."
The Black Scaled Snake Woman listened intently, her eyes wide with fascination and sympathy. "It sounds like a sad place now. But you survived. That makes you strong."
Xiao Feng nodded. "Yes, I survived. And I’ll keep surviving. For now, let’s find more food and figure out our next steps."
The Black Scaled Snake Woman seemed to understand the gravity of their situation. She followed Xiao Feng closely, ready to help in any way she could.
