Chapter 44: Pregnant

Hades and Sophia struggled to pry open the crushed door of Aurora’s SUV.

Just then, the wail of approaching sirens cut through the night air.

An ambulance pulled up, and paramedics rushed out.

Neither Sophia nor Hades knew who had called for help, but in that moment, it didn’t matter—what mattered was that the professionals were here to help Aurora.

With swift, practiced movements, the paramedics took control of the situation, forcing the mangled car door open.

Hades stepped back, his hands trembling slightly as he watched them carefully extract Aurora from the wreckage.

The sight of her unconscious body, blood still dripping from the wound on her forehead, was like a knife to his heart.

His mind was a whirlwind of panic and fear, but he forced himself to stay calm, at least outwardly.

Sophia stood frozen for a second, her eyes locked on Aurora’s pale face.

It was as if the world had narrowed to this one moment—this life hanging in the balance.

She blinked back tears, shaking her head to clear the fear clouding her thoughts.

The paramedics placed Aurora on a stretcher, securing her with straps, and hurriedly loaded her into the back of the ambulance.

Hades turned to Sophia, his mind racing with what to do next.

"Come on," he said, his voice sharp with urgency.

Without another word, Sophia followed Hades to his car.

She climbed in, barely registering the hum of the engine as he sped off behind the ambulance.

The silence between them was thick, heavy with the weight of everything unsaid.

Sophia’s hands were clenched tightly in her lap, her knuckles white.

She could feel the tension radiating from Hades, but for once, she didn’t care about him. Her thoughts were entirely on Aurora.

The state of the car had been horrifying—crumpled and twisted metal, shattered glass everywhere.

The fear that something worse might happen gnawed at her, and in her distress, she began to pray to the Moon Goddess.

Please let her be okay. Please, by some miracle, let Aurora be fine.

The words echoed in her head, over and over, a silent mantra.

The fear threatened to overwhelm her, but she kept praying, clinging to the hope that somehow, against all odds, Aurora would pull through.

Hades’s grip on the steering wheel was tight, his knuckles just as white as Sophia’s.

His mind was too chaotic to focus on anything else.

There was no time for chastising or even thinking about their earlier fight.

All he could think about was Aurora—his stepsister, the woman he had tried so hard to win over, now fighting for her life because of something he couldn’t control.

His heart pounded in his chest, every second stretching out in agonizing slow motion as he followed the ambulance through the city streets.

After what felt like an eternity, they arrived at the hospital.

The ambulance pulled into the emergency bay, and Hades parked quickly, barely getting out of the car before sprinting toward the entrance.

Sophia was right behind him.

The hospital staff moved swiftly, rushing Aurora into the ER.

The sight of her still, lifeless body being whisked away was almost too much for Hades to bear.

He reached out as if to follow, but a nurse stopped him, her voice gentle but firm.

"You can’t go in. We’ll take care of her. Please wait here."

Hades’s jaw clenched, frustration bubbling up, but he forced himself to nod.

There was nothing he could do but wait.

He glanced at Sophia, who stood next to him, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as if she was trying to hold herself together.

They exchanged a brief look—there was no contempt left between them in that moment. Only fear.

Aurora was rushed down the hall and into the operating room.

The doors swung shut behind her, leaving Sophia and Hades standing there, helpless.

Minutes stretched into what felt like hours as they sat outside the OR, waiting for any kind of news.

Hades paced the hallway, his mind racing with worst-case scenarios, his heart thudding in his chest.

Every second without an update felt like a lifetime.

Sophia sat in one of the plastic chairs, her hands trembling as she stared at the double doors.

She had never been more terrified in her life.

The image of Aurora, pale and unconscious, was etched in her mind.

She continued to pray silently, her lips moving slightly, begging for Aurora to be okay.

Please, let her live. Let her wake up.

Across the hall, Hades finally stopped pacing.

He leaned against the wall, closing his eyes, trying to push away the flood of emotions threatening to overtake him.

For once, he didn’t care about power or wealth or any of the games he had played.

All that mattered was that Aurora survived.

Sophia glanced at him, seeing a side of Hades she had never seen before—vulnerable, scared.

Despite everything he had done, she realized they shared the same fear. They were both bound by their concern for Aurora.

The sound of footsteps drew their attention, and they both stood up abruptly as the doctor approached them, her face solemn and unreadable.

Hades felt his heart stop in that moment, and Sophia’s breath hitched, the fear tightening around her chest.

"I’m Dr. Peters," the doctor began, her voice calm but laced with gravity. "I’m leading the team handling Aurora’s case. There’s something you both need to know."

Hades’s throat tightened.

He nodded, his eyes locked on the doctor, while Sophia clenched her hands tightly, bracing herself for the worst.

"Aurora sustained significant trauma from the accident," Dr. Peters continued, her gaze shifting between them. "We did everything we could to stabilize her, but... we discovered something during our examination."

Sophia exchanged a quick glance with Hades, confusion flickering between them.

"She is pregnant," the doctor said quietly.

Hades felt the floor drop out from under him.

Pregnant?

His mind reeled with the weight of the revelation, unable to process it.

Aurora had been carrying a child—children—and neither of them had known.

Sophia’s eyes widened, her hand flying to her mouth in shock.

"Pregnant?" Sophia’s voice was barely a whisper, her face paling as she stared at the doctor.
