Chapter 140 - 6
Chapter 140: 6
Knock knock
A faint knock resonated on the door before it swung open to reveal a maid stepping inside.
"Good morning, Miss Aurora. I am here to assist you in preparing for the day, per the Alpha’s instructions," the maid informed.
At the mention of the Alpha, Aurora swiftly arose from the bed and approached the maid with eager anticipation.
"Where is the Alpha?" she inquired.
"Um, the Alpha has gone on a journey," the maid hesitated before reluctantly answering.
"Gone? How? When? Why?" Aurora bombarded the maid with a flurry of questions, causing the maid’s face to flush with anxiety. She had only learned about the Alpha’s departure through the gossip among the omegas, and she worried about how she might defend her responses to Aurora.
"I have no precise information, Miss Aurora. Perhaps you should seek answers from Miss Theresa or the Alpha’s brother," the maid replied, striving to maintain a polite tone, even as her heart raced with apprehension.
"Oh no!" Aurora’s voice trembled as she processed the unexpected news. She had been looking forward to the contract’s dissolution and her newfound freedom from him. Why had he left? Was it intentional, or had something gone wrong?
"Theresa!" Remembering the maid’s suggestion to consult Theresa, she exclaimed and hurriedly left the room, leaving the maid behind.
"That was close." Relieved that she was no longer responsible for Aurora, the maid wasted no time and also made her exit from the room.
As she traversed the mansion in search of Theresa, she eventually found her in their usual meeting spot, the garden.
"Theresa!" she called out, startling Theresa. The teacup she held slipped from her hand, staining her dress.
"Oh my goodness, Selena!" Theresa exclaimed, grabbing a tissue to wipe off the stain on her dress, which fortunately was minor. She handed the used tissue to her handmaiden, then gazed up at Aurora with a puzzled expression.
What could have prompted such a burning cry for her attention?
"What’s the matter, dear?" Theresa rose, her brow furrowed. She had never seen such an expression on Aurora’s face before, something was clearly amiss.
"Why did Damien leave?" Aurora inquired.
"Oh, there was an urgent matter in another country that he had to attend to," Theresa replied, a sense of relief washing over her upon realizing the cause of Aurora’s distress wasn’t as dire as she had initially feared.
"Is it a serious matter? When will he return?" Aurora asked in a hurry, her breath quickened.
"At most, within two weeks, provided the situation doesn’t escalate further," Theresa replied, offering a reasonable probability.
Aurora frowned, tears welling up in her eyes. He had insisted on arranging their marriage within two weeks, and they hadn’t yet dissolved the contract. Did this mean she would be stuck here for another two weeks, waiting for his return? And there was no guarantee he would come back exactly on time.
No, she couldn’t wait. She couldn’t bear staying in the pack any longer after everything she’d been through. She needed to leave and find her own path.
"How can I reach him?" she asked.
"Reach him? Why would you want to do that? You can’t go unless he wants you there. Just wait for his return," Theresa shook her head in disapproval, indicating her strong opposition to Aurora’s request.
"But he promised to release me after we annulled our contract. I don’t want to wait for two weeks. No, I won’t!" As she spoke, tears streamed down her face, her eyes reddened, and her body trembled at the thought of being trapped here for another two weeks. She couldn’t bear it, she needed to leave and breathe elsewhere.
"Annulment? What are you talking about? Calm down and explain," Theresa implored, her puzzlement growing as she tried to grasp the situation. She had thought things were fine between them, especially after Aurora didn’t leave Damien’s room that night. She had only learned about Damien’s departure that morning from the elders. What was happening between the two of them?
"He said he wanted to annul the contract and let me go. We were going to sign a document, I sat waiting for him but he never came back." Wiping off her tears, she explained.
Theresa’s mind whirled with questions and panic, taken aback by the unexpected turn of events. She never anticipated this outcome. Could it have all been triggered by the dress she had suggested Aurora wear? Had she unintentionally ruined everything?
"Why? What went wrong? What prompted the sudden decision?" Theresa was confused and worried.
Damien had always been the hard type of guy but wasn’t he overdoing it? Why was he so darn hard to satisfy? The more she pondered on it, the more the ache in her head grew.
"He began questioning me about what I wanted, and I simply stated that I wished to fulfill our contract and then leave. I can’t be sure if my response angered him, but he sounded furious," she continued, frantically searching her memory for an explanation. It couldn’t be what she was thinking, he didn’t view her as a romantic interest.
"I believe my son may be in love with you."
Aurora had retreated to her room, her thoughts in turmoil. She had been pacing back and forth, trying to devise a plan, but nothing seemed to fit together. She lacked a passport, funds, or any means to leave for another country. She was like a lonely doll with no one to cater for her.
Theresa had refused to assist her, convinced it was a bad idea, and even Scarlet had opposed her plan. They were the only people she could turn to within the mansion, and they were unwilling to aid her.
Asking for help from friends outside the mansion would be complicated. She couldn’t afford to involve them, as it might jeopardize her plans. She had to maintain the utmost confidentiality.
A sudden idea struck her ’Dave.’ She bolted out of her room in search of Damien’s brother. He had previously offered to help if she ever needed it, and he was her last hope.
Running to his room, she hesitated in front of the door, taking a deep breath. It was now or never.
She knocked on the door but received no response. She knocked three more times, but there was only silence.
Growing anxious, she pushed the door open, fully aware it was wrong to enter a room unannounced. But she didn’t have the luxury of time to contemplate the consequences.
The room appeared empty and cold, as if it hadn’t been occupied overnight. She approached the bed, which was unusually cold instead of warm. If Dave hadn’t slept in his room, did that mean he wasn’t in the mansion?
"Ahhh," she exclaimed in frustration, running her hands through her hair. Impatience was gnawing at her, and she feared making a rash decision.
"Right, a pen!" She muttered to herself and began searching through Dave’s cupboard and desk for a pen and paper. She decided to write a letter to him, hoping he would see it upon his return, which she hoped would be soon. Checking through the cupboards, there was no single pen in them.
"Oh my, what do we have here? Finally showing your true colors now that the Alpha is away?" Aurora turned her back to the voice, and saw Sarah standing at the door, her expression filled with contempt, arms folded.
"What? I can explain, I am not here to steal anything. I wa—" Before she could finish, Sarah burst into a mocking laugh and advanced further into the room. Aurora cursed herself for leaving the door open.
"I never accused you of stealing anything. Are you already confessing before being questioned? You sneaky thief," Aurora’s hand dropped to her side, rendering her speechless. Had she just put herself in trouble?
"I will be on my way," she decided to leave before things got worse. Sarah didn’t seem ready to believe her, whether she was here for criminal purposes or not. Well, Sarah’s hatred toward her was obvious, she wasn’t surprised. She decided to leave before things escalated, after all, Sarah had no evidence to apprehend her.
"Not so fast, darling," Sarah blocked her path and forcefully pulled her to the ground.
"Ahh, what are you doing?" Aurora winced in pain and angrily protested. While snooping through someone’s room was indeed wrong, Sarah had no right to inflict pain on her without evidence.
"Apprehending the thief, of course. Unfortunately, the Alpha isn’t here to protect your little butt. I am in charge now," Sarah declared, her voice dripping with disdain for Aurora. It seemed like she had been waiting for an opportunity to rid herself of Aurora, and it had presented itself.
"I am not a thief, and you have no evidence to support that claim," Aurora stood up and held her ground.
"I am a witness! Guards!" Sarah called out, and several guards promptly entered the room.
"Lock her up in the dungeon."
