Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Going to bed so early, you little rascal, huh?
Qianqian left, without even saying goodbye.
Jiang Nian didn’t feel particularly disappointed, just a bit unaccustomed. They had been going to and from school at the same time all week; suddenly walking alone felt weird.
Classic, too classic, was she in a hurry?
She clearly had a phone and could have messaged me, or borrowed a classmate’s. Yet she left without a word, hmm... fun, but awkward.
Fatherly love and filial piety, bravo!
With such thoughts, Jiang Nian walked out of the school building.
Early October.
The evening temperature remained sweltering, clothes clinging uncomfortably to the skin. Students exiting evening study sessions scattered in front of the school, boarding students heading towards the dormitory area.
Jiang Nian followed the day students towards the school gate, passing by the administration building. Zhou Yuting happened to walk beside him and noticed him too.
Amidst the bustling and noisy crowd, she glanced coldly at Jiang Nian and sped up.
"Tch." Jiang Nian had nothing nice to say either.
Just meeting certain people feels like losing a few years of life; if it weren’t for social etiquette, he’d really want to vanish. If Zhou Yuting couldn’t hear him, he could carve it on her tombstone some day.
But thinking they wouldn’t cross paths again, he couldn’t be bothered.
Hide your mom, don’t let me find her.
Back home.
After washing up, Jiang Nian opened Qianqian’s WeChat page; her profile picture was a cat lying on a wall, with a blue sky and white clouds in the background, green branches hanging down in the middle.
Opening the chat window, their last conversation had stalled at National Day.
He thought for a moment, then sent a question mark. The quirky question mark abruptly took up an entire bubble, seemingly saying nothing yet saying everything.
Asleep?
Why didn’t you wait for me after evening study?
Abandoning me, huh?
Next time, I won’t invite you to a silver party.
Ten minutes passed with no response. He glanced at the time, eleven o’clock.
Sleeping so early, little turtle, huh.
Jiang Nian lay on his bed, opening Qianqian’s profile card like an emperor reviewing memorials. There was little information, just gender and nickname.
Girl from Flip Garden, Zhuangzhuang’s mom.
Darn, did Qianqian really name herself so idiotically?
Her Moments were set to three-day visibility, and in Jiang Nian’s memory, Qianqian hardly ever posted. She did occasionally post on QQ Space, mostly sharing giveaways.
Leave a comment to win gold.
He couldn’t be bothered to wait, planning to turn over and sleep. But he accidentally touched Qianqian’s profile picture, a downside of setting a ten-minute screen timeout.
Buzz, [You patted Qianqian’s cyber wooden fish, merit +1.]
Qianqian: "?"
The main character finally appeared, two question marks framing a pat on the cyber wooden fish, suggesting a head-on confrontation, neither willing to back down.
Jiang Nian typed a few keystrokes, suddenly losing interest in asking her.
"Never mind, going to sleep."
A line appeared at the top of Qianqian’s chat window, "The other party is typing....."
Glancing at the phone screen, based on Jiang Nian’s years of knowing her, it was likely just a "hmm" coming through. Maybe better not to see, just sleep.
Buzz, Jiang Nian turned over, ready to enter tonight’s yellow dreamland.
Buzz! Jiang Nian opened his eyes, a bit speechless.
Did she need to send filler words twice?
Buzz!!
Annoyed, Jiang Nian grabbed the phone from his leg. Unlocking the screen, he saw Qianqian hadn’t sent "hmm" but a message, "I think there’s a mouse in my house."
Two minutes later, another "?"
Five minutes later, "Are you asleep?"
Jiang Nian scrolled back over each word with some impatience. Even a clay figure has some temper, shouldn’t she explain why she ghosted him? Why didn’t she reply just now?
But out of basic decency, considering their relationship, he gave a warm-hearted response.
"I know you have a mouse, thanks, but I’m not hungry right now."
Qianqian: "????"
"Your words are so niche. I mean, do you have any good solutions?"
Jiang Nian: "There is one, listen up. Kneel on the floor, beg Grandpa Mouse not to scare you, then during the day hang a rope outside the mouse hole."
Qianqian: "[Eye roll] What kind of useless nonsense is that? Speak human words."
He replied, "Kill it."
"I can’t catch it, don’t know where it’s hiding," Qianqian typed quickly, "Should’ve kept a cat, at least it could catch the mouse."
He almost said something bad about cats but feared getting a goddess Pan plate on his head from TikTok.
"Old Xu loves cleanliness too much, mild OCD, can’t stand things like that. Plus, if the cat swallowed the mouse whole in front of you....."
"Stop, don’t gross me out." Qianqian sent a shiver emoji, "Hurry and think of a solution, I’m going crazy, Old Xu isn’t home."
Jiang Nian slowly looked at the last few words of her message, hesitating for a moment.
"Alright, alright, your dad’s coming."
Qianqian: "[Middle finger emoji]"
Jiang Nian rolled out of bed, quietly slipped out of his room, and gingerly closed the door. The front door was old; as long as he moved slowly, it wouldn’t make noisy sounds.
Otherwise, in the middle of the night, someone might think a video was playing with speakers connected.
After closing his own door, Jiang Nian didn’t directly knock on the door opposite; he pulled out his phone to message Qianqian. The sound-activated lights in the hallway didn’t turn on; the corridor was pitch black.
"I’m here."
A little later, he saw a sliver of light appear at the door crack. The soft sound of slippers dragging against the floor came echoing out, blocking a little bit of light before going silent.
Buzz! His phone lit up, a message flashed nervously.
"Are you really outside? Why no sound?"
Jiang Nian was speechless, edited a message to reply.
"Should I rap some yellow hair rap for you?"
With a click, the sound of the door latch turning was crisp in the night. Then, the door slowly opened, the living room light spilling out like threads.
Qianqian and Jiang Nian exchanged a look, visibly relieved. Without speaking, she tilted her head, signaling him to hurry in, not to dawdle.
Jiang Nian walked in, turning to see her cautiously closing the door. Only when the door was fully shut without making a sound did she face him.
Wasn’t Old Xu not home? Why so secretive?
Could it be a secret meet-up?
She was wearing a thin white nightdress, dotted with pink peach blossoms. Her hair was a bit messy, casually tied in a bun, lips pink and slick.
"What are you looking at?"
"You."
"You perv, stop staring, get to work."
"Hey, I’m catching a mouse for you in the middle of the night, this is your attitude?" Jiang Nian ran to the fridge, helping himself to a Coke, starting the self-service mode.
Yet he was already used to Qianqian’s manner since he usually had the same carefree style.
They were birds of a feather.
Jiang Nian had no expectations of her; they both knew exactly what the other was like. Instead of wasting words, it was better to chug down some cold Coke first.
