Chapter 240: Chapter 207: Is it Just for Me, or Does Everyone Have It?
Li Qingrong turned around to Jiang Nian and said.
"I’m heading back."
Jiang Nian glanced over briefly and replied.
"Oh, oh, okay."
He was just passing by and would have to hurry home for a nap. In the afternoon, he planned to head to the classroom an hour early to copy last night’s homework.
Li Qingrong lowered her gaze momentarily, as if remembering something. Covered in warm sunlight on the street, she raised her hand and waved, her voice nearly transparent.
"Bye bye."
"Mm, bye bye." Jiang Nian waved back.
He watched as the class monitor sat in the front passenger seat, still holding the milk tea and the marinated meat roll. Fastening the seat belt with one hand, she sat upright, her gaze slightly inclined.
As the car started moving, she happened to turn her head and glance at Jiang Nian.
In the car.
Li Lanying turned her head to look at her sister and asked curiously.
"Your classmate?"
"Yeah."
"Aren’t you the one who doesn’t drink milk tea? Did that guy give it to you?" Li Lanying asked casually as she steered the wheel, "What does his family do?"
The car was quiet inside, with no response.
Li Lanying was already used to it, pretending to be hurt she said.
"I’m about to cry, you’re ignoring me."
The car drove past Zhennan Street, turned at an intersection, and headed down along the riverside of Nanjiang Road.
"The hometown hasn’t developed much, but it’s a bit better than before," Li Lanying sighed. "Coming back once, at least the roads are easier to drive on."
Mid-sentence, she glanced at the front passenger seat.
"Can I have a sip of your milk tea? I’m a bit thirsty."
Li Qingrong’s tone was icy, "Buy your own."
"Hey, you..." Li Lanying didn’t think much and set her eyes on the marinated meat roll, "Then give me some food, I came to pick you up just after getting home, haven’t had a bite to eat."
"You ate, I saw your Moments," Li Qingrong said coldly.
"Ah, you even look at my Moments," Li Lanying said joyfully, "Are you secretly following your sister, don’t love me too much."
Li Qingrong: "...."
"Don’t be so stingy, let me have a bite," Li Lanying chirped while driving, "I used to buy them often when I was in school, so nostalgic."
Li Qingrong ignored her and looked down at her phone.
She tapped into Jiang Nian’s QQ space, the latest post was from the August summer vacation. It was a scenic picture of purple evening clouds with just two words captioning it.
[Damn].
A kind of studied but not highly cultured beauty.
Scrolling further, there were some mundane updates, "[My mom said she’s going to throw me out the window, laughed to death, doesn’t she know that falling from the third floor won’t kill me]."
Or some game complaints, "[In the middle of the night, accidentally entered the funeral hall, no offense, why are they all bots.]"
Li Qingrong only had to scroll through about ten posts before reaching the end and then she opened the message board. There were more than six hundred comments, most of them from girls.
Various happy Lantern Festivals, happy New Year’s Day, happy Mid-Autumn Festival, happy birthdays.
Beyond that, there were other daily posts.
Sanqi: [Buy me milk tea.]
Jiang Nian: No money.
Some back-and-forth interactions that seemed dated. The most active period on the message board was mostly during the third year of middle school, with scarcely any activity after starting high school.
There wasn’t a single recent message, just emptiness.
The car’s tires rolled over the slope of the parking lot, and the surrounding sounds became spacious. The parking lot was brightly lit, the engine’s sound echoing, and the car quickly parked in a spot.
Li Lanying got out of the car, removed her sunglasses. She turned her head to see Li Qingrong still holding that marinated meat roll and milk tea and was quite puzzled.
"If you’re not eating, why bring it back?"
"To eat."
"Then... if it’s for the world’s best sister, can I have some?"
"No."
....
Lin Dong was somewhat weary, bumping into a couple on the way back to the dormitory.
Shit.
The guy was burly, spinning the girl in circles on the road. As he passed by, he was kicked straight into the greenbelt by the girl’s sweeping leg.
Damn couples, I’ll curse them to have triplets, none their own.
Back in the dormitory.
Lin Dong saw Zeng You lying on the bed reading a novel, striking a flamboyant pose, too bad he wasn’t in Nan Liang.
Everyone else in the dorm room was gone, making him somewhat curious.
"Where are they?"
"Wu Jungu went back to his aunt’s to eat, and Luo Zhongping went to the classroom to do homework," Zeng You’s legs swung back and forth like a teenage girl’s.
"I don’t know about the others, probably went out to play."
Lin Dong responded with an "Oh," squatted down, and pulled out a suitcase from under the bed. He’d played ball for three hours in the morning, and his sweat had already dried.
Since there was supplementary class in the afternoon, he intended to find some clothes, take a shower, and then nap.
"Let me tell you, it was really crazy. On the way back to the dorm, I ran into a pair of damn lovebirds, who spun around and kicked me into the greenbelt."
"Haha, damn, did they say anything?" Zeng You asked.
"Blame me for not watching where I was going, damn it."
"Can you tolerate that?"
"It’s alright, we’re classmates," Lin Dong picked up his clothes, looking sacred as a Buddha, "I already know which class that girl’s in."
Zeng You was a bit puzzled, knowing this, what could he do?
Revenge?
Lin Dong came out after showering, lay on the bed, and found two people, successfully getting that girl’s QQ number. He switched to a backup account and added her.
Afternoon.
Jiang Nian woke up from his bed, glanced at the shoe rack across the door as he stepped out.
Xu Qianqian’s shoes were at the door, she was still at home, probably intending to go to school later. If he hadn’t left his homework untouched, he’d also want to go later.
He arrived at school twenty minutes later, the sun was slightly scorching.
There weren’t many people in the classroom.
Luo Zhongping sat in the middle of the second row, head lowered, doing homework. A few people were scattered around, some playing on their phones, others napping.
Before long, Chen Yunyun and Wang Yuhe came in talking and laughing from the entrance. Seeing Jiang Nian, they walked directly towards his seat.
As they drew closer, Jiang Nian realized Chen Yunyun was carrying something in her hand.
"What’s this?"
"Some clothes and food my parents sent me, too lazy to go back to the dorm, I’ll go later in the afternoon." Chen Yunyun hesitated for a moment, then asked, "Do you want some?"
"Sure, can I pick out the clothes?" Jiang Nian was interested.
"Pick your head!" Chen Yunyun lowered her voice, both shy and wanting to laugh, "Can you be serious? You can only pick the food, if not, forget it."
"Sure." Jiang Nian didn’t hesitate.
"But it’s not bought snacks, it’s fish wraps my mom made at home, with green chili inside." Chen Yunyun was slightly embarrassed, fearing he’d dislike it.
Her family wasn’t short on money, but store-bought snacks just couldn’t compare to her mom’s homemade.
"I love that even more, can I have it all?" Jiang Nian jubilantly reached into the bag, sorting through the various kinds of food.
Chen Yunyun smiled broadly, quietly relieved.
On the side, Wang Yuhe suddenly said, "Jiang Nian, after you eat the chili wrap, do you dare not drink water?"
Jiang Nian paused and glanced at her.
"Why?"
"I ate one of Yunyun’s chili wraps without drinking a drop of water," Wang Yuhe crossed her arms, looking proud and stared straight at him, "Can you do it?"
Jiang Nian thought for a second, then swallowed a chili wrap whole.
"Sweet."
The smile on Wang Yuhe’s face disappeared instantly, but she still stared at him.
"You want to drink water, don’t you?"
Jiang Nian turned to Chen Yunyun and asked curiously.
"Did you put sugar in it?"
Wang Yuhe’s face fell, and she stormed off.
Jiang Nian chuckled, knowing Wang Yuhe wanted to compete with him on chili tolerance. He did feel the heat, but it was manageable, a small victory over elementary school kids.
Chen Yunyun pinched her forehead, speechless at the pair of them.
"Don’t keep picking on her."
"So funny, no match at all."
Chen Yunyun: "...."
She knew Jiang Nian was just like this and turned to find Wang Yuhe.
Jiang Nian laughed and continued copying homework. Feeling almost done, he went downstairs to buy drinks, and while buying, picked up a few more boxes of fruity milk.
Upstairs, on the third floor, he bumped into Le Zhi, and they stood there chatting for a bit.
"The method you gave me last time to improve my grades actually worked," Le Zhi sighed, "but it was a bit too intense, this week exhausted me."
"I’m curious, how did you stick it out back then?"
Jiang Nian recalled for a bit and considered.
"With some persistence, I guess."
"Wow, I really admire that you can find fun in hardships," Le Zhi rubbed his face, his eyes bloodshot, gazing into the distance, "My whole life I’ve walked on thin ice."
"Jiang Nian, do you think I can hang on until the end of the month’s Six Cities Major Joint Exam?"
"Keep going!" He didn’t have much else to say, "I know you’re tired, but don’t overdo it."
Le Zhi: "..."
"By the way, I checked your last exam’s results," Le Zhi asked curiously, "Your biology improved by twenty points after class promotion, how did you do that?"
"Oh, that, didn’t the grade group do an elite program?" Jiang Nian raised an eyebrow, "If it weren’t for our biology teacher picking and choosing, I’d still be just passing."
"Of course, there’s nothing wrong with just passing. But eighty points feels much more expansive to me."
Le Zhi fell silent; initially, he wanted to vent a bit, but now it felt more heartbreaking.
However, after chatting with Jiang Nian for a while, his resolve seemed stronger. At least he had a goal now, not just for the sake of face, but to prove something.
After half an hour, as class time approached, students began to trickle into the classroom.
Zhang Ningzhi entered the classroom to find an extra box of fruity milk on her desk. It was a classic skin returning, involuntarily bringing back memories of the first exam scene.
She walked over from Jiang Nian’s seat, curious.
"Is this from you?"
"Yep."
Zhang Ningzhi was just about to say something when she turned and saw there was also a box on the monitor’s desk. Stunned, her eyes shifted to see one on Li Hua’s desk too.
All at once, a little deflated.
Turns out it wasn’t just for her, others got some too. Humph, figured she’d get what’s left after everyone else picked.
Jiang Nian was still copying homework and looked up only after a while.
Right then, the class bell rang, and Li Hua dashed into the classroom. Surprised to find milk on his desk, he was overjoyed and turned to see that Ma Guojun had some too.
Figuring it was from Jiang Nian, he was delighted to get it for free.
"God bless you!"
Hearing it, Jiang Nian was about to say something cheeky when he noticed Zhang Ningzhi in his peripheral vision.
She seemed sullen, couldn’t tell what was wrong.
