Chapter 355 - Chapter 355 Chapter 354 Brother Hao Takes the Stage
Chapter 355: Chapter 354 Brother Hao Takes the Stage Chapter 355: Chapter 354 Brother Hao Takes the Stage As soon as Liu Bighead finished speaking, everyone’s gaze in the room riveted on Wang Hao!
Had gazes the power to penetrate, Wang Hao would have certainly become as riddled as honeycomb briquette–the kind executed by firing squad for ten minutes!
“Who is this guy? How dare he say that none of our skits are any good?!”
“Exactly, I’ve never seen him before. What’s he so full of hot air for? If our stuff isn’t up to snuff, then his is?!”
“Who cares about him? Liu Bighead really did great, calling our sketches rubbish at an event like this. Now let’s see what he has to say!”
At this moment, Secretary Lin on the stage also spotted Wang Hao and frowned, “Who are you?”
“Hello, my name is Wang Hao. I’m here to support my classmate today,” Wang Hao said smilingly, adding, “and to check out the fun.”
“Your classmate, who?” Secretary Lin asked curiously. “Which act did they perform?”
“It’s that cross-talk act that just got approved,” Wang Hao replied. “Yue Peng is my classmate.”
“Oh, him?” Upon hearing this, Secretary Lin was taken aback and said, “Your classmate is quite talented; the cross-talk was really good!”
Then Yue Peng, who was sitting beside Wang Hao, chimed in. A loyal wingman to Wang Hao, he said, “Secretary Lin, the cross-talk I performed was all thanks to Brother Hao. My Brother Hao is incredibly talented!”
Instantly, everyone in the room dropped their jaws in shock!
The skit that had everyone in stitches just now, had been crafted by this Wang Hao?
Secretary Lin was also surprised and asked, “You did a good job with the cross-talk. You understand skits as well?”
Wang Hao humbly smiled, “A little bit, just a little.”
Hearing Wang Hao say ‘a little’, Secretary Lin immediately stroked his chin in thought. After all, this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival gala was taken very seriously–Mayor Su had given significant instructions that it needed to be done well, with delightful songs and engaging skits!
As his secretary, Lin Qingfeng indeed treated this as a matter of importance.
But the problem was, none of the skits performed by the actors were up to par, save for that one cross-talk. There’s an old saying, desperate times call for desperate measures, so he blurted out, “This… How about you come up and talk about it, young man?”
“Sure!” Wang Hao boldly stepped forward, and Secretary Lin quickly had someone fetch a stool for him. Now the head of the TV station also spoke up. Holding the microphone, he whispered, “Wang Hao, performing a skit isn’t just about knowing a few funny jokes. You need a package, it has to flow well, and there have to be laugh points. It’s very professional work. Some people live their entire lives off one successful skit, so take it easy, okay?”
“Don’t worry! If I didn’t have the chops, I wouldn’t dare stand up here, right?” Wang Hao took the microphone and declared, “Next, I’ll tell everyone about skits!”
“Criticizing it when you’re the one who’s overweight!” Liu Bighead glared with eyes wide open and shouted, “Do you know how long it takes to develop a skit? We work for a month on one piece, revising over and over before we can bring it to stage! You, a mere cross-talk comedian, dare to talk about skits here? And to say my work is no good?!”
The crowd echoed, “Exactly, exactly. This is a highly specialized field. Don’t cross lines when you don’t understand!”
“I’m really sorry,” Wang Hao said with a chuckling smile, “I think you’ve misunderstood me. I’m not targeting anyone specifically. What I meant to say is, all of your skits, they’re just not up to scratch!”
Boom! As soon as Wang Hao spoke, the whole room exploded into a frenzy!
“This Wang Hao sure talks big! Does he really understand skits? He must be bluffing, right?”
“Exactly, skits aren’t that easy to concoct. You need characters, right? You need a plot, right? You need a package, right? It’s not as if you can casually slap together some comic dialogue and call it a skit.”
“Absolutely! He must be showing off because Secretary Lin is here; he’s just blowing smoke!”
“Secretary Lin, I can’t take this job!” Liu Bighead, puffing out his chest with eyes bulging, exclaimed, “Some random guy pops up claiming he understands skits and says our performances are no good! I know he’s acquainted with you, Secretary Lin, but surely you can’t be covering for your friend like this? Letting him make a scene here?!”
This put Secretary Lin in a tough spot, and he said, “Wang Hao, take it easy, will you? Can you actually deliver?”
“Don’t believe me, eh?” Wang Hao said with a laugh, “I knew you wouldn’t believe me. Hey, what’s his name? Liu Bighead, right? That skit you performed earlier–what on earth was it?! No coherence, lacking punchlines, and the package was not at all clever. You spent over a month on that?”
“I’m no good?!” Liu Bighead shouted angrily, “If you’re so capable, then you get up there!”
Everyone echoed in agreement–
“Exactly, Secretary Lin, if you don’t take charge, we’re not taking this job!”
“If you can do it, step up; otherwise, cut the crap!”
“That’s right, if you’re up to it, do it; if not, step down and stop posing!”
Sitting in the corner, Yue Peng was clenching a handful of cold sweat, thinking, Brother Hao, you’re my real brother! Can you pull this off or not?! You better not scare me!
Faced with the crowd’s impassioned clamor, Wang Hao smiled, gestured for calm, and said, “Let me just say one thing, so everyone understands what a comedy skit is.” Then he called out, “Hey, buddy, can you grab me a plank? I’ll show you a demonstration.”
An officer nearby immediately fetched a plank and set it on the stage.
Wang Hao walked over and swiftly wrote three words on the plank, which everyone read aloud together, “Scotland.”
Then Wang Hao wrote two more words underneath, and this time everyone read it together, “Scotland flirtation?”
Wang Hao chuckled and corrected, “That’s Scottish sentiment!”
Everyone first stared in disbelief, and then the room erupted into laughter–
“Ha ha ha ha, this is interesting! And don’t tell me, the kid has some skills. Just a few words, and he’s already made a joke!”
“Really, it looks like he does have talent. Scotland flirtation, Scottish sentiment, ha ha, just a mix-up in order can kill you with laughter!”
As everyone laughed heartily, Secretary Lin was dumbfounded. He laughed for a good while before exclaiming in astonishment, “Bro, that was impressive! Divine, I’d say. Just five simple words, and you’ve got a joke!”
“Everyone got it?” Wang Hao pointed at the five words. “That’s what a joke is, get it? Now take a look at your own work. You hustle for ages and can’t even produce a single laugh. Did I wrong you by saying your work isn’t cutting it? Yue Peng, has Zhao Lao Nian from our big stage arrived? If he’s here, call him up! Get a braid of garlic and a chicken too! And find a pair of trousers–ones with really wide legs!”
“Got it!” Yue Peng shouted, “I’ll call him over now!”
Soon, a middle-aged uncle who looked honest and scared walked into the room, timidly saluting the platform, “I’m here, I’m here, I am Zhao Lao Nian.”
“Old Nian, come over here,” Wang Hao waved him over and then asked Yue Peng to help him with the props. “Put these props on!”
Wang Hao then scanned the scene, not caring who was who, and randomly selected someone appropriate, calling out, “Hey, you, yes, you, come here, you’ve got a role!”
The little girl pointed to her, “Me?”
“Yes, you,” Wang Hao said. “In this skit, you’re Mao Mao, got that?”
“Alright,” the girl walked up confidently as Wang Hao instructed, “This man is your grandfather, understand?”
The little girl nodded, “Understood!”
Wang Hao continued to scout for actors on the spot and quickly, his eyes lit up, he called out, “That one over there, yeah, the younger one, the effeminate one–hey, yes, you!”
The young man was not pleased, “Who are you calling effeminate? I’m a real man!”
Wang Hao laughed heartily; this guy was perfect!
“You’re playing a waiter at this restaurant,” Wang Hao said. “I’ll write your lines in a bit!”
“Is that going to work?” the guy asked, filled with doubt as he walked up. “Do I just read the lines?”
“Exactly,” Wang Hao then pulled another person forward, saying, “You’ll play a judge from Zhonghai Good Songs, got it?”
The person nodded, “Understood.”
Now that the casting was finished, Wang Hao got to work writing the script. With a laptop and printer at hand, he typed furiously, and in about twenty minutes, he had all the lines printed out, one copy for each person, and handed them down, saying directly, “Done, all you need to do is read the script. There are cues for when to do what; you all can understand it, right?”
A few of them nodded together, “We can!”
