Chapter 84 Truth or Dare
Before long, the organizer, the little cousin, walked over and pulled Jiang An to join the game. Jiang An was dragged to sit in the middle, and the next second she heard her say to everyone: "Come on, truth or dare."
A group of people gathered around, and only Gao Chuan, sitting on the sofa, did not move. Everyone at the scene seemed to be used to this, and Song Li started the game with an empty bottle placed on the table.
Jiang An put on an embarrassed smile, her eyes also following the bottle in Song Li’s hand. The bottle spun clockwise rapidly a few times before slowing down, and everyone tensed up watching intently until, eventually, it pointed right at Jiang An.
Jiang An’s heart skipped a beat, sighing to herself that her reputation as "unlucky" was indeed well-earned. Seeing that Jiang An was the first to be picked, everyone started clapping and cheering. Song Li placed the destiny card on the table, his face showing an ambiguous smile: "Sister-in-law, truth or dare?"
Jiang An pinched the corner of her shirt, thought for a moment, and finally chose truth.
Sitting on the sofa, Gao Chuan continued to drink his own wine, the rising clamor of voices buzzing in his ears, his brows furrowing slightly as he listened to the girl hesitantly choose truth.
Seeing this, Song Li drew a card, looked at it with surprise, and the people next to him crowded over, soon snatching it to show everyone, which fueled even louder cheers from the crowd.
Jiang An looked down and felt a rush of blood to her head.
The question was to name the first person she had sex with.
Everyone was waiting eagerly, seeing only two possible outcomes: either she says it was Gao Chuan, turning it into a display of their love, or she names another man, thus embarrassing Gao Chuan.
But perhaps many were anticipating the latter.
Jiang An couldn’t believe her luck; to draw such a challenging card in the first round. Under the crowd’s prompting, she finally mustered the courage to quietly say: "Not yet."
As soon as she spoke, the room fell silent, faces all showing disbelief.
How could it be? They’ve been married so long, and they’re still on their wedding night?
The crowd was sceptical, including Song Li, who hadn’t expected that the two hadn’t consummated their marriage after all this time.
Gao Chuan glanced over upon hearing Jiang An say "not yet", his expression darkening as he downed the drink in his hand, the strong liquor burning down his throat.
The question hit a sensitive spot, and after answering, the girl buried her head, her cheeks flushing red with embarrassment.
While everyone was still murmuring, Song Li gathered himself and coughed softly, "Come on, let’s continue."
Unexpectedly, this time the bottle pointed to him. Song Li also chose truth and was asked how many girlfriends he had had. The usually teasing and atmosphere-building Song Li held up his fingers, counting one by one, being reprimanded by everyone as a playboy.
Amidst the laughter, everyone had almost forgotten Jiang An’s earlier question. After a few rounds, Jiang An was targeted again, the girl helplessly holding her forehead, seriously beginning to suspect the bottle was magically biased towards her.
"Oh, sister-in-law again." The crowd noisily pushed, asking Jiang An whether she would choose truth or dare.
Jiang An had been observing this group for a while, and noticed that the truths they chose almost always involved sensitive topics related to privacy. Moreover, since she found herself in an embarrassing situation in the first round, she opted for dare, thinking it might be simpler and that she could easily bluff her way through.
But when she held the card in her hands, she immediately regretted it, her heart pounding so hard it felt like it might explode.
Everyone craned their necks to see, and the younger cousin was the first to read it out loud: "Kiss someone of the opposite sex present here for two minutes."
In the eyes of this group, this dare seemed far too simple, even lacking excitement, since her husband was right there playing along, but then they got curious as they had never seen this couple kiss in public. The younger cousin’s lips curled up, "Well, sister-in-law, you should just kiss your husband!"
Everyone at the scene felt it was only natural for the two to kiss. Even if Jiang An loved fun, surely she wouldn’t choose another man with Gao Chuan around.
The crowd watched as Jiang An, sitting on the sofa, turned bright red, their taunts growing louder. Song Li thought this was a great opportunity for the couple to reconcile and turned to look at Gao Chuan, who was being ignored by everyone. He teasingly said, "Dr. Gao, why don’t you kiss the sister-in-law? She’s all shy already."
Everyone burst into laughter at Song Li’s joke, while Gao Chuan’s chilling gaze swept over, sending a shiver down their spines. The man remained silent, sitting on the sofa and sipping his drink without moving.
"Come on, sister-in-law, don’t make your husband wait!" The noisy crowd kept egging her on, and after hesitating for a long time, Jiang An finally spoke, "I’ll drink instead."
The next second, accepting her loss, she didn’t wait for anyone to object and grabbed a glass from the table, tilting her head back and gulping it down in one go.
Only Song Li and Gao Chuan knew the girl couldn’t handle her liquor, and just before, to prevent constant drinking during the game, they’d switched to high-proof vodka. They watched, speechless, as Jiang An downed it in one go.
Gao Chuan, in the middle of the crowd, saw Jiang An drink it all and his expression grew colder.
After finishing her drink, Jiang An couldn’t help coughing a few times. Her face was flushed, her head dizzy and seeing stars, she ignored everyone’s concern and headed straight to the bathroom under an excuse.
Gao Chuan’s gaze followed Jiang An as she fled, instinctively standing up from the sofa. Spotting Song Li making eye signals at him, he glared fiercely at him before chasing after her.
Song Li felt a chill, thinking it wasn’t his fault she had to drink; why glare at him?
As the man turned away, the younger cousin leaned in gossip-hungry, "Brother Song, did the sister-in-law have a fight with her husband? They’re acting so weird today!"
The rest nodded in agreement. Earlier, Jiang An mentioning she still had her virginity was one thing, but now she didn’t even want to kiss her own husband, choosing instead to drink such strong liquor—could there really be something amiss between them?
Song Li looked up, a mischievous smile on his lips, and shrugged, "It’s just right being weird. Come on, let’s continue playing."
Jiang An stumbled into the bathroom, standing in front of the sink and staring at her bright red cheeks in the mirror. She hastily turned on the faucet to splash her face with water, slapping her cheeks to snap out of it. The awkward scene from the room still lingered in her mind, leaving her feeling suddenly melancholic.
Did she really handle it poorly? Dr. Gao hated seeing her drink; would he despise her now, seeing her like this?
A myriad of questions bombarded her as she leaned over the sink, her face showing clear signs of intoxication, resolved not to return to that awful game. She hurriedly took out her phone to message her cousin, ready to make her escape. After drafting her message, she leaned against the wall to leave the restroom, only to see Gao Chuan standing quietly by the door, watching the ground. As he noticed someone emerging, his eyes shifted.
Their gazes met, and Jiang An didn’t move forward.
