Chapter 61: The Sense of Security Dr. Gao Brought Her

Gao Chuan languidly left the girl’s room, his steps inexplicably disturbed. He walked into the living room, opened the drawer to get the medical kit, and remembered something. He then went to his room to grab the medicine bottle that he had intended to give Jiang An earlier in the afternoon. Although the accident had just happened, he still appeared to take it easy in front of Jiang An, but only he knew that he was burning intensely inside.

Although he hadn’t had a girlfriend in the first thirty years, he still had basic physical needs. Witnessing the scene just now, any normal man would have a reaction, and of course, Dr. Gao was no exception.

The man did not leave the bedroom but turned back, went straight into the bathroom. The cold water flowed down his delicate cheeks, his muscular chest suddenly covered with droplets, filling the room solely with the sound of rushing water.

Gao Chuan painfully raised his head, letting the droplets smash into his sculpted face, as if only in this way could he alleviate the flames surging within him at the moment.

Jiang An’s alluring face lingered in front of him, and the man could not help but give up struggling, standing in the turbulent water with a sudden bitter smile.

At this moment, Jiang An was sitting on the bed with a blank gaze waiting for the man’s arrival. She didn’t know what her own feelings were at the moment. She hugged herself with her hand, and her left hand, still throbbing with pain, seemed almost numb. The girl felt a flush of heat in her ears, and for her, every minute and every second was an immense torment.

It took a full ten minutes before Gao Chuan came in, carrying the medical kit and wearing another white crane pajama. Seeing Jiang An sitting alone on the bed, he pondered what kind of thoughts were behind her delicate expression.

Jiang An saw Dr. Gao arriving and embarrassingly turned her head, obediently extending her injured left hand. Gao Chuan saw that the bandages wrapped during the day were almost completely soaked through. He thought that if he hadn’t actively come, Jiang An might have endured it silently. His eyebrows knitted as he placed the medical kit on the table beside him, silently starting to remove the wet layer of gauze. After peeling it off, the blade-like cut on the girl’s hand came into view. He had thought that the hospital had only dressed the wound simply and it wasn’t too deep, but now he was surprised when seeing the alarming cut on the back of her hand. Unaware of her own wound, Jiang An kept her face turned, not daring to look directly at the injury, not noticing the moved expression in Gao Chuan’s eyes as he saw her clench the quilt tightly, a slight smile forming at the corners of his mouth.

Even though she was afraid, she had still rushed forward without hesitation. Gao Chuan had thought that more than once but never mentioned it out loud.

He knew that, in some aspects, this seemingly frail girl had a very strong sense of pride.

Jiang An kept her eyes closed the entire time but could still feel the gentleness of Gao Chuan’s movements, certainly much gentler than the male doctor at the hospital. However, when the slightly cold ointment touched her wound, she inevitably let out a hiss.

Hearing the girl’s pained sound, the man applying the ointment on the wound inadvertently lightened his touch even more. After applying one layer, he picked up the bottle of golden sore medicine beside him—a homemade remedy from his grandmother, a recipe he had used during his childhood for various bumps and bruises.

"Does it hurt?" Dr. Gao asked, looking at Jiang An’s anxious face creased together, knowingly. Sure enough, upon hearing him, Jiang An opened her bright, watery eyes, and replied in a soft, gentle voice, "It doesn’t hurt."

As expected, right on the mark.

Gao Chuan suddenly could not hold back and chuckled aloud. In his haste, the movement of his hands became a bit rougher, causing Jiang An to involuntarily hiss in pain. She realized Dr. Gao seemed to be mocking her, and she shyly dared not lift her head to see the expression on the man’s face.

"Apply this, so it won’t scar later." Gao Chuan opened a small medicine bottle in his hand, slowly sprinkling the medicine powder onto Jiang An’s wound. The potency of the powder was much greater than the previous solution, making Jiang An tightly bite her lips as tears were about to emerge from the corners of her eyes.

She had always been afraid of pain since she was a child. She remembered when she was little and had a fever, she was so afraid of injections that she always chose to have an IV drip instead. Even a scraped knee during play would lead her to cry in front of her mother. Back then, she could cry openly about the pain. Now, she realized that tears were like pearls, a rare luxury for her as an adult.

In the end, Gao Chuan wrapped a new layer of medical gauze around the girl’s wound. Even though he specialized in oncology, he had spent some time in the emergency room when he first started his hospital internship. Dr. Gao had decent medical training in dressing wounds, and he efficiently secured the bandage for Jiang An. Standing up straight, as he watched Jiang An bear the pain throughout the process, he suddenly felt an inexplicable twitch in his heart. Suddenly lifting his hand, he gently caressed Jiang An’s head. He realized the gesture was somewhat abrupt but still did not let go of his hand, his voice somewhat hoarse as he said, "Be careful with the wound in the future; fortunately, it didn’t tear, otherwise the consequences would have been severe."

Even though his words were tinged with a lecturing tone, Jiang An felt them to be extremely gentle coming from his mouth.

Jiang An sat still on the bed, feeling the touch on her head and obediently nodded.

Suddenly, she found herself enjoying these moments with Dr. Gao, even though there seemed to be a barrier between them always. But whenever Dr. Gao touched her head, she felt like a cat attached to its owner.

Dr. Gao gave her a sense of security.

She had thought that after applying the medicine the man would leave the room. As Jiang An sat stiffly on the bed, her legs beginning to numb, just as Dr. Gao was turning around and she tried to stretch out her legs to relieve them, she saw him pull a towel from the bathroom. Without a word, he placed it on her damp hair and started drying it gently. Caught off guard, Jiang An closed her eyes; the soft fragrance of shampoo emanating from her gentle hair strands, she was somewhat astonished and couldn’t believe the tenderness of the scene.

A calm voice came from above her head: "Dry your hair before sleeping, or you’ll catch a cold."

Dr. Gao was really breaking the rules today. Jiang An’s cheeks flushed with a red hue, and regaining her composure, she extended her hand to take the towel from Dr. Gao, her voice rough, "Dr. Gao, let me do it myself."

As she lowered her head to reach out, she touched Gao Chuan’s hand quite accurately instead, and after touching the softness, she quickly withdrew her hand. This time, Gao Chuan did not insist. He stopped his movement and handed the towel to Jiang An, instructing her to "sleep early" before turning around and leaving the room.

Jiang An squeezed the towel in her hand, which had become damp from the wiping. Staring at the man’s retreating figure, her gaze suddenly landed on a glass of milk on the table, her lips curving into a smile.

Dr. Gao... seemed to have always cared about her quite a bit.
