Chapter 45: Chapter 44 Feed Me

The mall was bustling with people as the two of them took the express elevator. Standing behind Gao Chuan, who was holding a handbag, Jiang An observed the girl dressed in a cherry blossom pink dress with a simple little bun in her hair. Her round face was adorned with a pair of black eyes.

She was pondering over Gao Chuan’s words from earlier. To act, one must play the part fully. She guessed that Gao Chuan mentioned buying an engagement ring because he was worried about the family’s inquiries tomorrow, when Jiang An realized they had arrived at their floor. Gao Chuan, walking ahead, looked back at Jiang An and noticed the distance between them, so he consciously slowed down his pace.

Together, they entered a store and as soon as they approached the counter, an enthusiastic clerk came over. Upon learning that they were picking wedding rings, the clerk started to introduce the store’s featured designs. Both inexperienced in buying diamond rings, they could only be led by the nose.

"This one is the latest model in our store, and there are also custom designs. Madam, take a look, which one do you like?" The clerk explained in front of Jiang An. Looking down at the rings presented to her, she felt somewhat dazzled.

For Jiang An, both the ring and the wedding dress are things that girls probably look forward to. Yet, unexpectedly, she found herself indifferent in the face of the sparkling diamonds. Seeing Jiang An’s indecision, the clerk had to change tactics and turn to Gao Chuan, "Sir, look at this design, it suits madam so well. Madam has such beautiful hands."

Always sensitive to titles like "sir" and "madam," Jiang An’s face turned red upon hearing this, and she felt the man, who had been expressionless beside her, get closer to her. A deep voice came from above her head: "Do you see anything you like?"

Jiang An glanced around and finally pointed at a pair of rings tucked away in a corner, asking the clerk to bring them over. Upon Jiang An’s choice of the plain bands, the clerk’s face notably dimmed but still helped the two take them out.

Jiang An tried one on her ring finger and found it fit perfectly. She turned to Gao Chuan with a raspy voice, "Is this one okay?"

The clerk, who had been quietly watching the two, was utterly befuddled. The couple’s unfamiliarity with each other made them seem less like a married pair and more like strangers who had just met.

Gao Chuan looked at the ring Jiang An had chosen, tried the corresponding men’s model on his own finger, and, finding that it fit, casually put it back and said to the clerk, "We’ll take this pair. Please wrap them up."

Still harboring doubts, the clerk watched the two leave. She had never seen customers so reserved and polite while choosing a ring.

Jiang An once heard from Shen Mei that in past years, the Gao Family would host lavish birthday banquets for the elderly lady, attended not only by the Gao Family but also by many friendly families and business partners. Now that Gao Lin was sick and did not want to upset the elderly lady, this year they only notified relatives to come to the banquet.

When Gao Chuan and Jiang An arrived at grandmother’s house, many people were already there. Even though Jiang An had recognized many of the Gao Family relatives with Shen Mei last time, there were many new faces at this birthday banquet, and she became the center of attention.

Although the Gao Family was a large household, they were not much for rules. The men gathered at the wine tables, while the women chatted about household matters. Jiang An sat timidly among the crowd, enduring the elders’ interrogation. Thankfully, with grandmother by her side, she wasn’t left completely alone.

"Oh, Shen Mei, you’ve really settled one of life’s big issues, getting such a good daughter-in-law," said the others, heaping praises that made Shen Mei grin from ear to ear.

"Why don’t we see your elder daughter-in-law?" someone asked.

Shen Mei, casually crossing her legs, had slight change of expression and answered somewhat perfunctorily, "Who knows, she’s busy filming."

Everyone in the Gao Family knew that Gao Yu had married a celebrity who had always been at odds with Shen Mei. Now the girl Gao Chuan had married seemed well-behaved, but with no significant family background, it was feared she might also find it difficult to establish herself in the household.

Jiang An seemed to have become accustomed to interacting with Gao Chuan’s family. When she heard them mention Gao Yu’s wife, she was somewhat puzzled. For her current status, it was not just about getting along with her mother-in-law but also handling her sister-in-law well.

During lunchtime, when everyone finally gathered, Gao Chuan, who had been drinking with the elders for half the day, left the banquet and came over to Jiang An’s side. The empty seat beside her was promptly taken by him. Jiang An was sipping her porridge in small mouthfuls when she smelled the strong scent of alcohol from Gao Chuan and wrinkled her nose.

The other elders at the table watched Gao Chuan join Jiang An and teased the young couple. Her face flushed, the girl served a bowl of porridge for the man beside her. Gao Chuan, still composed despite the voices around him, accepted the porridge handed to him by Jiang An. Perhaps because he had drunk too much that morning, his face was slightly flushed, and a faint blush tinged his handsome face.

The man beside her ate a few bites before leaning over to whisper in Jiang An’s ear, "I’m going to sleep upstairs for a bit."

Jiang An looked up at the man’s flushed cheeks, understanding that he might have drunk too much, and obediently acknowledged.

In the afternoon, Shen Mei apparently learned that Gao Chuan had drunk a bit too much and ordered Aunt Liu to prepare some hangover soup and had Jiang An bring it up to him.

When the girl went upstairs and pushed the door open, she saw the man sleeping soundly on the bed, carelessly uncovered. She approached to get a closer look at his flushed face. The man’s resting expression was peaceful, his facial features gentle, with a noble nose above slightly upturned lips. Even with his eyes closed, one couldn’t help but imagine how lovely his eyes must be.

Regaining her composure, Jiang An placed the hangover soup on the table beside her and started to pull the blanket at the bed’s head to cover him. Seemingly feeling the sudden weight on his body, the person in the bed stirred and opened his eyes slightly, only to see Jiang An at his bedside, tucking in the blanket. He called out without realising, "Jiang An..."

Hearing the man’s slurred voice, Jiang An looked down to see him awake and exclaimed in surprise, "Dr. Gao, you’re awake!"

The man slowly sat up, his head still feeling cloudy, while the girl already brought the hangover soup to him, saying gently, "Have some hangover soup; it will make you feel better."

Through his blurred vision, he noticed the girl’s face had drawn much closer. Gao Chuan’s eyes flickered slightly, hesitating to take the soup in her hands. Seeing this, Jiang An asked somewhat awkwardly, "Do you want to drink it later?"

As she turned to put the soup aside, Jiang An suddenly felt a tug at the hem of her clothes. Surprised, she turned back to meet the man’s gaze. The person on the bed looked dazed, his demeanor more relaxed compared to his usual aloofness. He opened his lips and said in a deep voice, "Feed me."

Jiang An: "???!"

Looking down at Dr. Gao’s harmless face when drunk, looking as meek as a little lamb, Jiang An obediently picked up the spoon and gently scooped some soup to his mouth. He surprisingly cooperated by opening his mouth wide and dutifully drank it.

Spoon by spoon, they slowly finished the bowl of hangover soup. When it was finally over, Jiang An turned to leave, but suddenly the man firmly grabbed her hand.

From behind her, a feeble voice said, "Don’t go."
