Chapter 42: Chapter 41 Confrontation from a Rival in Love
The next day, the sky was clear with a few thin white clouds moving slowly with the wind.
After returning to the city, Jiang An immediately went to her grandmother’s house. As soon as she entered, she saw Shen Mei accompanying her grandmother watching TV in the living room. Shen Mei stood up to greet her as soon as she saw her, and only then did Jiang An realize that Shen Mei had already told her grandmother about her trip to the mountains to seek remedies for her. The elderly held her hand tightly, continuously praising her for being thoughtful and sensible.
Jiang An initially just wanted to make her grandmother more comfortable, and didn’t expect to receive such unexpected praise; she went along with it and after chatting with them, she buried herself in the kitchen to start diligently preparing the medicinal soup according to the traditional doctor’s prescriptions.
After dropping off Jiang An, Gao Chuan went straight to the hospital. He first checked on the condition of his patients to make sure everything was okay before leaving the ward. The tumor in the pregnant woman was a complicated case. Originally, he planned to contact the gynecology department to communicate about the patient’s current situation, but before he could make the call, a nurse from his department knocked on the door.
"Come in."
"Dr. Gao, someone outside says they are looking for you," the nurse reported from the doorway.
Gao Chuan put aside his work and responded casually, "Let him in."
As soon as the words left his mouth, Gao Chuan looked up to see a man standing at the door, dressed in a dark gray suit, with long legs and a slim waist, undoubtedly a golden ratio.
Gao Chuan’s gaze flickered with a hint of distraction, then he looked away. When the man stepped in, he turned his gaze back to him.
"What can I do for you, sir?" Even though it was unexpected, Gao Chuan asked as usual.
Wei Yan sat down in the chair opposite the man, his eyes sizing up the man in the white coat. The man’s fair face was strikingly handsome with prominent facial features, and his gaze remained sharp as he looked back at Wei Yan. Wei Yan crossed his legs and said coldly, "You should know me, Dr. Gao."
With his hands crossed on the table, Gao Chuan was noncommittal under the man’s scrutinizing gaze.
Images of this man flashed through Wei Yan’s mind. They had only met twice; the first time was in Gao Chuan’s car when he was returning Jiang An home, where he was struck by the man’s cold gaze as he leaned over to look inside the car. The other time was when he himself had taken Jiang An home recently, learning then that the man had married Jiang An. Wei Yan felt that Gao Chuan was hostile towards him, perhaps because he was preoccupied with prior opinions.
It was as if he was about to take away something dear to him.
"Let’s cut to the chase then. My name is Wei Yan, I was a student of Anan’s mother before she passed. It was thanks to her and little Jiang An’s guidance and care that I am where I am today," Wei Yan said unyieldingly and clearly stated his identity despite Gao Chuan’s low pressure.
Although Gao Chuan had already known all this information from Song Li’s introduction, he still frowned involuntarily when he heard Wei Yan’s unusually affectionate mention of Jiang An. From his perspective, this man always seemed somewhat presumptuous.
"You probably know about Anan’s mother’s death. As far as I’m aware, Anan has no relatives left in this city. I consider myself her family, and I came here today with no other intention but to remind Dr. Gao that no matter what purpose you had for marrying Jiang An, if you dare hurt her in any way, I as her family in this city will personally take her back." The resentment seemed palpable in Wei Yan’s eyes.
Facing the man’s nearly threatening words, Gao Chuan maintained an unruffled expression and only after the man had finished venting did he slightly hook the corner of his lips, "Thank you, Mr. Wei, for your concern about my wife. Our marriage, though hastily made, was mutually desired; what purpose could there be?"
Wei Yan stood up from the chair harshly, saying, "Are you saying you’ve never coerced Anan?"
Gao Chuan, still unfazed in his chair, replied, "Our marriage is out of free love, and besides, my wife has never mentioned having such a person as family, and what right does an outsider have to interfere in the matters between husband and wife?"
The atmosphere in the office suddenly became tense, with both parties clearly challenging each other.
Watching how composed Gao Chuan was in responding, Wei Yan felt even more that this man was of deep complexity. How could Jiang An possibly cope with him?
"No matter what, since you’ve married Anan, please treat her well. She’s a good girl, deserving of love..." Wei Yan was about to continue but was interrupted by a knock at the door. Both people stopped, and Gao Chuan signaled for the person to come in.
A doctor in a white coat entered carrying a stack of documents, saw the two men confronting each other coldly, and politely backed out, "Dr. Gao, if you’re busy now, remember to come discuss bed number three’s condition when you’re done."
After the doctor left, Gao Chuan stood up from his chair, his glare as fierce as ever, "As I said, the affairs between my wife and I are between the two of us, there’s no need for Mr. Wei to trouble himself. This is my working time, I hope Mr. Wei won’t disturb my work."
After finishing, the man pulled a ballpoint pen from his left breast pocket, picked up the medical report on the desk, and left the office. Wei Yan watched the man slowly walk away, silently clenching his fist.
In this uninvited confrontation, he seemed to have lost, utterly.
After meeting with the doctor who had come to find him earlier, Gao Chuan and the other started reviewing the patients’ post-surgery recovery data. The other doctor expressed his opinions, while Gao Chuan’s eyes settled on the densely packed data on the papers, involuntarily thinking about Wei Yan’s questioning words—as if everything was developing towards what he had been thinking.
That man liked Jiang An, an idea that surged in Gao Chuan the moment he first saw Wei Yan.
Now, the saying proved true, and he suddenly didn’t know whether to feel sad or happy.
Not to mention that he was already married to Jiang An. Even if it had been a fair competition, would he have won so decisively?
He didn’t know.
Or rather, he wasn’t sure.
"Dr. Gao, Dr. Gao, are you listening?" It wasn’t until the doctor beside him waved his hand in front of him that the man abruptly came back to his senses, looked at the documents in his hand and apologized, "Where were we?"
"It’s rare to see Dr. Gao distracted!" The discussing doctor teased.
Gao Chuan returned to the topic they had been discussing, "Continue, continue."
