Chapter 35: Chapter 34 Fools, Even Forgot the Birthday

Jiang An finished her part-time work on Sunday and took a taxi to the Western restaurant mentioned in Wei Yan’s message, thinking it was just a simple reunion. She was not expecting that as soon as she finished ordering and sat down, Wei Yan suddenly stood up and clapped his hands. The surrounding patrons mostly rose from their seats, each holding a white rose and enclosing her. Jiang An couldn’t help but gape, only realizing what was happening when she took the roses from everyone and heard them singing "Happy Birthday" in unison; today was her birthday.

She was almost dizzy with busyness, and if it hadn’t been for the party that Wei Yan had prepared, she might have really forgotten.

She had thought that after her mother’s death, no one would remember her birthday again, so when Jiang An, feeling overwhelmed by the attention, turned to see Wei Yan, who was also wishing her a happy birthday, his gaze fell on her. He walked over in front of everyone and touched her head with a reproachful gesture, pretending to scold her: "Silly girl, you even forgot your own birthday."

Wei Yan had been away for nearly a month on business, and the first thing he did when he came back was to think about meeting Jiang An. He was looking for an excuse but then realized that today was Jiang An’s birthday, so he made a reservation at the restaurant and prepared a surprise, waiting for her to arrive. Standing next to Jiang An, Wei Yan urged her to make a wish, his eyes filled with indulgence as he looked at the girl in the candlelight.

Surrounded by everyone’s warm blessings, Jiang An slowly made a wish towards the cake and then bent down to blow out all the candles on the cake in one breath. Her eyes began to redden in the gentle light, and turning her head to see everyone begin to applaud, her nose tingled sharply, and Wei Yan noticed the girl’s eyes were red. He came forward gently to wipe away a few tears from the corner of her eyes, asking, "Why are you crying now?"

The more Wei Yan soothed her, the more uncontrollably her tears fell. She had originally thought that after her mother left, she would be completely alone, but she hadn’t expected that in this city there was another person who cared about her and remembered her birthday.

Moved, Jiang An leaned onto the man’s chest and whispered a "Thank you."

"Silly girl, today is for celebrating your birthday, not for you to cry," Wei Yan looked down with low eyebrows at the girl’s tear-stained face and gently brushed away the tears from the corners of her eyes.

He wanted to tell her that she was not alone.

This was the first time in Jiang An’s life that she received so many birthday wishes, and she happily enjoyed everything that Wei Yan had carefully prepared with a group of people, cutting the cake and playing games together. After a few hours and having drunk quite a lot, when the party was finally over, Wei Yan helped her into the car.

Wei Yan hadn’t expected Jiang An to have such a low tolerance for alcohol. Seeing the girl rambling and dizzy, he realized she was drunk. The man, supporting a girl who stumbled as she walked, sighed and brought her to his car. Jiang An seemed to still be immersed in the joyful atmosphere from earlier, and even after sitting in the car, she was still dancing with excitement, wanting to continue playing. Wei Yan, facing the thoroughly drunken Jiang An, felt helpless. After buckling her seatbelt, he asked the girl where to take her.

Jiang An, with a flushed face, squinted her eyes and sang out her address. Wei Yan realized it was neither the school nor the apartment complex she had lived in before and asked with a hint of confusion: "Did you move?"

The girl in the passenger seat heard this and smiled with a nod, then suddenly fell silent as if she thought of something, the light in her eyes dimmed significantly, but she still kept a smile and boldly claimed: "That’s not my home, that’s Dr. Gao’s home."

Wei Yan, listening to the girl’s hesitant words, didn’t catch on and thought Jiang An was just speaking drunken nonsense. He started the car and drove towards the address she had given.

The car arrived at the residential complex around eleven at night. Wei Yan parked the car by the entrance, then turned his head to see the girl who had been noisy all the way was now leaning on the seat, asleep. He couldn’t bear to wake her. In the dimly lit cabin, the girl’s fair cheeks revealed a soft pink glow, her long, black, and beautiful hair spread over her shoulders, beneath her exquisite nose was a set of cherry lips.

Wei Yan quietly gazed at the girl sitting next to him. He pulled a square box from his pocket, sighed silently, and showed a helpless smile, whispering to himself, "Silly girl, I shouldn’t have let you drink today."

The night slowly passed, and the car interior was silent.

In the end, Wei Yan silently put the box back into his pocket, reached out, and gently tapped Jiang An on the shoulder. The girl slightly opened her bleary eyes, and the next second, she was unbuckled from her seatbelt by someone and helped out of the car. Still not sober, Jiang An saw Wei Yan in front of her, heard him asking which floor she lived on, and answered, "Sixteenth."

Wei Yan helped Jiang An up in the elevator and went upstairs. Looking at the expensive housing in this complex, he assumed Jiang An was sharing a flat with someone else. Helping her to press the doorbell, Gao Chuan, who hadn’t gone to bed yet, heard the noise and hurried to open the door, stunned by the two figures outside.

Wei Yan looked up at Gao Chuan, also surprised. Although they had only met once, he still remembered him clearly. As they stood in silence, Jiang An, nestled in Wei Yan’s arms, opened her eyes and saw Gao Chuan stumbling towards the door. Losing her balance, she fell right into the man’s arms, cooing with a spoiled tone, "Dr. Gao."

Gao Chuan looked down at the girl drunkenly leaning in his arms, steadied her, and heard Wei Yan from the side asking, "Who are you?"

Without a moment’s hesitation, Gao Chuan lifted his gaze and answered, "I am her husband," his cold tone sounded like a stern declaration.

Wei Yan’s face stiffened upon hearing this, then he indifferently curled his lips, blurting out incredulously, "Impossible, how could I not know if Anan got married."

The sound reached Jiang An’s ears before Gao Chuan could explain, Jiang An muttered to herself, "Married? Right, I got married to Dr. Gao, I’m married to Dr. Gao..."

Gao Chuan heard the girl in his arms had already explained before he did, raised a hand to pull Jiang An closer against his chest, and stared indifferently at a shocked Wei Yan, saying coldly, "If Mr. Wei does not believe it, I can show you the marriage certificate. But it’s very late now, and since the person has been safely delivered, I’ll have to ask Mr. Wei to hurry home."

Wei Yan watched as Gao Chuan pulled Jiang An inside and closed the door, still wearing a face of disbelief. He couldn’t believe that Jiang An would get married so quickly within the month of his absence; there must be some misunderstanding. The man recalled Gao Chuan’s piercing gaze from a moment ago, as if he wanted to devour him, and his face went pale.

Even as he reassured himself, a voice suddenly surged from the bottom of his heart: Wei Yan, have you still missed the chance by a step?
