Chapter 27: Don’t Wait for Me

—The most valuable virtues of the 19th century: fervent idealism and emphasis on emotions, and fear of love.—

Night fell like an abyss, a shallow crescent hung in the east, a few stars faintly twinkling coldly, the city bustling with festivities under the cover of night.

Gao Chuan drove to the private room arranged by Song Li and pushed open the mahogany door to find men clustered together, their faces furrowed, the room filled with a strong smell of alcohol and fireworks. Hearing the sound of the door, Song Li, who noticed him entering, quickly let go of the girls around him and cheerfully welcomed him to sit on the couch.

The usual friends, knowing Gao Chuan’s reclusive nature, continued singing and drinking as usual, while Gao Chuan sat silently in a corner, pouring himself a drink to slowly savor.

Today was Song Li’s birthday gathering, and almost everyone present was a friend Gao Chuan knew from the circle, all either rich or noble young masters. He seemed somewhat out of place among them, and after a short while, he bluntly transferred some money to Song Li as a birthday gift before standing up intending to leave. A somewhat tipsy Song Li grabbed his shoulder, "Leaving so early, afraid your wife is getting anxious?"

As soon as Song Li finished speaking, Gao Chuan, who felt his shoulder clutched, grew cold in expression, his fierce glare sweeping towards the drunken man, snuffing out his cigarette butt, uninterested in entertaining the joke.

Inebriated, Song Li danced wildly with the music, smugly smiling at Gao Chuan, "Lao Gao, you’ve got to change this problem of forgetting friends after getting a wife."

"Yeah, when will you bring your sister-in-law over for us to see? We also want to see what kind of beauty has captured you, this god-like man, hahaha." His friends joked. News of Gao Chuan’s marriage had spread in the circle not long ago, and everyone was curious which famous family’s daughter matched Gao Chuan, the "unattainable."

With everyone jeering, Gao Chuan left the private room with a dark face, finally escaping the garish scene. He closed the door behind him, took only a few steps before pulling out another cigarette from his jacket pocket, a lighter flared, the cigarette slowly burning, the man leaned exhaustedly against the desolate hallway lost in thought.

Recalling the WeChat message from Jiang An he received after finishing surgery today, his eyes cold as obsidian stones.

Jiang An: Dr. Gao, I have submitted my thesis early.

Jiang An: You really helped me out, let’s have dinner sometime.

Everything seemed increasingly beyond his control. Originally intending to just get through things, Gao Chuan hadn’t expected his marriage news to suddenly be known by everyone. On the other hand, he hadn’t foreseen how the relationship between the two seemed to have grown closer over the past few days.

As he smoked, the thick white smoke mixed with his calm breath and dispersed into the air. As he looked thoughtfully upwards, a provocatively dressed woman stepped out from the room. Noticing Gao Chuan smoking alone, she tossed her long hair over her shoulder, walked up in her high heels, boldly leaned against him, and provocatively pressed against his chest, "Is the handsome guy alone?"

In the dim corridor light, the man’s sharply defined face appeared especially charming. His eyes opened slowly to the sight of the woman pressing against him, showing a disgusted expression, took a puff from his cigarette, and spat out a word: "Scram."

Seeing his indifferent expression, the woman fearfully took a step back, turned, and left, muttering a few curses before disappearing around the corner.

After the cigarette was finished, Gao Chuan looked at his watch, a deep light shining in his eyes, and silently left the club.

At 1:15 am, darkness enveloped the room, the girl coiled up on the sofa, sound asleep, the television still on airing a recent variety show. Gao Chuan returned home, turned on the light, and seeing the girl asleep in the living room, paused a moment then began to remove his suit jacket as he approached her.

Seemingly hearing someone, Jiang An rubbed her eyes, her bright white eyeballs and light brown irises glanced up to see the newly arrived Gao Chuan, and she yawned, as usual, greeted him, "Dr. Gao, you’re back!"

"Hmm." The exhausted man, noticing she was awake, stopped beside the sofa, looking at Jiang An as she attempted to rise, "You haven’t had dinner yet, have you? Let me warm it up for you."

"No need, I’ve eaten outside." Gao Chuan quickly stopped Jiang An from heading to the kitchen, watching her stop and awkwardly retract her steps, dimming the light in her eyes somewhat, she spoke hesitantly, "Oh, okay."

"Sorry I saw your message late. It’s good that you submitted your paper; no need to thank me." Gao Chuan stood behind her explaining why he hadn’t replied, watching as she went to the table to grab a cup aiming to pour water, she immediately responded upon hearing his voice, "It’s alright, as long as you’ve eaten."

"Hmm, you don’t have to wait for me in the future, just rest." Gao Chuan glanced at the wall clock, reminding her.

Jiang An remained in the same posture of pouring water, her body stiffened, her voice choked as she replied, "Okay."

"Rest early," he said, then lifted his feet and walked into his bedroom while Jiang An still stood by the table until the water overflowed from the cup before she finally stopped her movements. Turning her head to see the man leave the living room, she silently walked into the kitchen, putting the carefully prepared dishes one by one into the trash with light movements to avoid making noise.

In the darkness, the girl leaned weakly against the cabinet, her eyes feeling a bit dry, she tried to squeeze out a faint smile, continuing to dispose of the last dish, fanning her reddening eyes, luckily, the tears did not fall.

She told herself it wasn’t about feeling lost, it was just a pity about the afternoon’s preparation.

The girl looked up weakly, recalling Gao Chuan’s unfamiliar tone from earlier, she laughed scornfully at herself, constantly reminding herself that this was just a marriage of convenience, they would eventually part, she should never have expected anything from love.

But why did thinking this make her feel so sad...
