Chapter 259: Wishing for a Child

Before long, the kitchen was ready, and the group of people who had been chatting in the corners began to gather around the dining table, waiting for the feast to start.

Even though today’s guests were mostly close-knit relatives, it was a substantial crowd that filled a large table.

Jiang An sat down with Gao Chuan, and as soon as the dishes were almost ready to serve, Gao Yu pushed the cake to the children.

Under everyone’s blessings, Gao Yan was held in Shen Mei’s arms, made his wish with his eyes closed, and then blew out the four candles on the cake.

Everyone knew how Gao Lin and his wife had longed for this grandson, and naturally saw the child as a treasure. The whole gathering’s attention was on the little birthday star, teasing and laughing heartily at the child’s witty responses.

The cake was cut, and a while passed before the chopsticks were lifted. Ji Wanwan came forward to pick up Gao Yan and put him in the chair next to her, specially fetching a pair of chopsticks and a bowl for the child and attending to his meal.

Jiang An was sitting beside the mother and son, helping Ji Wanwan take care of the little boy’s dining.

With the family together, naturally, the conversation turned to family matters, with the men occasionally discussing company matters. Jiang An wasn’t interested in listening, her gaze on the plate of spicy crawfish in front of her, uncertain how to begin eating.

Although there were gloves prepared on the side, she was always averse to hassle, and after glancing twice, she gave up and turned to a plate of vegetables instead.

At such a family banquet, Gao Chuan has always been the quiet one, silently sitting beside Jiang An. Occasionally when Gao Lin asked about the company, he would mechanically answer, and the rest of the time, his gaze stayed on the woman next to him.

Surrounded by such a large family, Jiang An was reserved in her eating, occasionally leaning in to respond to something Ji Wanwan said to her, neglecting the fact that she had a boyfriend beside her.

The two women were deep in discussion about the child’s picky eating habits, with Ji Wanwan continuously sighing and complaining about how picky children are these days, unwilling even to eat vegetables.

Drawing from her own experience as a doctor, Jiang An gave some advice, her smile shallow yet clear as she looked at Ji Wanwan’s worried expression.

Just as she turned her head to talk to Ji Wanwan again, a small bowl was suddenly pushed over by the man next to her. When she turned her gaze back, she found that it contained peeled crawfish. She looked up at Gao Chuan, who had been silent throughout the meal, with a hint of surprise in her eyes.

"Eat it," he said, noticing she was looking at him, his handsome and indifferent face still displaying little emotion, uttering just two words.

A servant was busy clearing the shrimp shells from the man’s hand, and when Jiang An turned her head back, she noticed that most of the crawfish on her plate had disappeared.

No wonder she hadn’t heard any noise from him; he must have been peeling the shrimp for her all along.

It would be false to say she wasn’t touched. A flush crept onto Jiang An’s cheeks, and just as she was about to say "thank you," the child sitting beside them suddenly came over, eyes lit up at the sight of the peeled crawfish in Jiang An’s bowl, becoming a little glutton, pleading, "Sister, can I eat the crawfish in your bowl?"

Jiang An naturally wouldn’t refuse the child’s request for food, she pushed the bowl towards the little one, smiling as she consented, "Of course, you can, but don’t eat too much."

Seeing this scene, Gao Chuan looked away with indifference in his eyes, still silent as he sat at his spot.

Jiang An, engrossed in taking care of the child, didn’t notice that the man beside her had left the table within a few minutes. When her gaze finally moved that way, his seat was empty, and as she looked around, she couldn’t find Gao Chuan anywhere.

The company around the dining table was jovial, while outside the window the sky had put on its inky cloak, a lonely, clear moon hanging in the air, the unique breezy chill of an autumn night rushing in.

Gao Chuan stood alone on the balcony, slightly leaning on the railing in front of him, with occasional bursts of laughter from the house reaching his ears.

The night was thus, flickering along with the sparse dots of stars, were the man’s deep, dark eyes.

Anan hadn’t been alone for long before he heard footsteps from behind. Gao Yu, who had just left the gathering, saw him seeking solitude again, and strode over.

The man stood beside him and naturally offered him a cigarette from his pocket.

Gao Chuan silently accepted it, lit it with the lighter passed to him, and leaned forward to ignite the cigarette in his hand. Tiny sparks flew as he drew in a breath and instantly exhaled a puff of white smoke.

Both men looked up at the moon together. As the saying goes, the moon is roundest on the sixteenth after the full moon on the fifteenth, and indeed it seemed so.

"Anan agreed to remarry you?" Gao Yu couldn’t help but gossip upon seeing the two together earlier that day.

This was the second time that day that Gao Chuan heard this question. His brow furrowed slightly, his expression weary in the darkness, and as usual, he uttered two words: "Not yet."

Gao Yu turned to look at the man, clicking his tongue in a tone mixed with teasing, "You’re not doing well, huh? It’s been several months and you still haven’t won her back!"

Gao Chuan, hearing the man’s mockery, kept his face tense and unresponsive.

Others might not understand the intricacies between them, but he knew that if he really wanted to get back together with Jiang An, he couldn’t rush it now.

Their issues weren’t that simple.

Gao Yu spoke again, "Yanyan is already four years old. Are you capable or not? I’m still waiting for you and Jiang An to give him a little sister!"

The taunting voice fell on Gao Chuan’s ears, deepening the sorrow on the man’s face as he silently looked up, searching the sky for the few stars that could be counted on fingers.

He wondered, if he hadn’t been so careless back then and had opened his heart to Jiang An, would their child have been born safely?

Might it have been a girl?

This was a question he often thought about during the days following their divorce. He originally thought he agreed to have a child with Jiang An solely to avoid leaving regrets for his dying grandmother, but when he learned that Jiang An miscarried due to a car accident, an unprecedented pain surged in his heart, sharp as a thousand arrows piercing through.

He grieved for the child they never had the chance to know, but even more for Jiang An.

It was at that moment he realized he truly wanted to create a life with Jiang An, not to appease relatives or continue the family line, but because he had deeply fallen in love with her.

Regrettably, heaven had taken away that opportunity from him.

Lost in thought with a cigarette in hand, Gao Chuan snapped back to reality when Gao Yu called out his name. Turning to glance at his brother, he responded coldly, "You better take care of your precious son first!"

Watching Gao Chuan walk away after speaking, Gao Yu’s lips curled into a slight smile, watching his broad back.

He had also heard about the little incident that occurred between Gao Chuan and Yanyan – it was unexpected that his normally cool and restrained brother could be childish enough to bicker with a little kid.

People change, truly change.
