Chapter 253: Why He Never Looked for Her in Four Years

Whether you’re by my side or far away on the horizon, knowing that you exist somewhere in the corner of the world makes the entire world feel tender and stable. — Gu Cheng

As night fell, the sky turned pitch-black, with the stars and moon hiding away, and the gentle evening breeze made one feel quite comfortable.

By 11:30 PM, the party finally came to an end, and the crowd left the restaurant in pairs and groups.

Even though Jiang An had developed a better tolerance for alcohol over the years, she couldn’t hold out against the onslaught of the group’s drinking at the table, and unsurprisingly, she was completely drunk early on.

Ji Wanwan, who had abstained from drinking throughout to look after the children, helped Jiang An downstairs, exerting a great deal of effort to get both the child and her into the car. Taking the driver’s seat, she stepped on the gas pedal and followed the navigation towards Jiang An’s apartment.

Along the way, the alcohol-soaked Jiang An slumped in the passenger seat, and like Gao Yan in the backseat, quietly fell asleep.

Before long, the car arrived at the base of the apartment building. Ji Wanwan turned off the engine, first looked back at the sweetly sleeping Gao Yan in the backseat, and then gently patted Jiang An in the passenger seat, softly calling out, "Anan, we’re home."

Half-asleep, Jiang An opened her eyes slightly; her drunkenness had not completely worn off. Her long eyelashes fluttered, and upon recognizing the person beside her, she spoke drunkenly with a flushed face, "Don’t stop me, I can still drink!"

Ji Wanwan, who was beside her, quickly covered her mouth, afraid of disturbing the child already asleep in the backseat. Seeing that Jiang An had completely lost consciousness after drinking, Ji Wanwan sighed, got out of the car, walked around to the other side of the car, and helped the muttering Jiang An out.

Leaning on her shoulder, although her speech was slurred, she kept talking non-stop.

"I want to drink, I want to drink."

Ji Wanwan supported her, locked the car with one hand, and then led her upstairs.

Fortunately, she had visited Jiang An’s home before with Yanyan and knew the apartment number. The two staggered all the way to Jiang An’s doorstep. Ji Wanwan fumbled through Jiang An’s bag but couldn’t find the keys, so she turned to ask the woman beside her, who could barely stand, "Anan, where did you put the keys?"

Before Jiang An could reply, the door suddenly opened from the inside, and a burst of light illuminated the two women in the corridor.

A tall man stood at the door; noticing the two women and seeing the stumbling, heavily drunk Jiang An, his fine brows frowned slightly.

"Why are you here?" Ji Wanwan was surprised to see Gao Chuan in front of her, wondering if the two had rekindled their relationship and reached the point of cohabitation without their knowledge.

But now, seeing Gao Chuan, Ji Wanwan felt like she had seen a savior.

Before waiting for Gao Chuan to reply, she pushed Jiang An into the man’s arms and handed over Jiang An’s bag as well, explaining, "Anan is drunk today, take good care of her. I need to hurry back downstairs, Yanyan is still in the car."

Handing Jiang An over to Gao Chuan gave her peace of mind.

She quickly went downstairs, and her hurried figure disappeared in the dimly lit corridor.

Gao Chuan watched Ji Wanwan leave, then turned to look at Jiang An, who was leaning against him and clamoring to keep drinking, guessing that the woman wasn’t just slightly drunk. Under the dim light, her little face was flushed red, her rosy lips parted, making her look like a succulent ripe peach.

Seeing her restless demeanor in his arms, his heart inexplicably softened, and he helped her walk in, then turned and gently closed the door behind them.

It seemed that Jiang An was unaware that Ji Wanwan had left her with Gao Chuan; she continued untroubled, calling out, "Wanwan, don’t stop me, I can still drink."

Saying so, she danced around in the man’s warm embrace like a child throwing a tantrum after getting drunk.

Gao Chuan watched her frenzied behavior without saying a word and slowly helped her to the sofa.

Putting down the bag in her hand, she thought about making a cup of honey water for the little drunkard in front of her. Just as she was about to get up and leave, she was unexpectedly grabbed by Jiang An, who was leaning on the couch. He turned his head in surprise, his gaze falling on his palm, now caught in her grip, his eyes black and unfathomable, like the depths of a dark pool.

"Don’t go, stay and drink with me!" The woman continued to slur her words, her tone soft and coquettish, as if she was throwing a tantrum.

Gao Chuan listened to her seductive tone, his complexion suddenly darkening.

Had she spoken to other men the same way tonight?

Lost in thought, he was caught off-guard by Jiang An pulling him down, her strength not insignificant. He leaned forward helplessly, his hands landing on the couch in disarray.

When he lifted his gaze again, his tall figure was already pressing down on Jiang An.

In an instant, the distance between him and Jiang An was mere centimeters.

Gao Chuan paused for a few seconds, staring intently at the person before him, feeling the woman’s burning breath.

Jiang An wore a light pink dress today, and because of her drunkenness, her whole face was flushed like a blooming rose. He lowered his eyes slightly, and what met his gaze was the woman’s smooth and fair neck.

He missed her, for four years.

In this moment, a heart with nowhere to rest finally broke free from its shackles; all reason and restraint were replaced by an impulse in his mind. The man advanced rather than retreated, slightly leaning down to capture her alluring lips.

His movement had yet to succeed when the person beneath suddenly blinked, as if finally seeing him clearly, interrupting, "Dr. Gao, it’s you?"

The faint voice brushed past his ear, soft and delicate. The man’s eyes hesitated, forced to stop.

"It’s me." He fiddled with the strands of hair scattered across her chest, patiently answering her.

"You... you..." Jiang An squinted at the person before her, stammering as she began to speak.

Gao Chuan maintained his position, observing her with a hint of a smile in his eyes, responding warmly, "What about me?"

"You bastard!" Jiang An muttered in a daze, her small, flushed face tinged with anger.

Like a ruffled little cat, as endearing as ever in her drunken state.

Listening to her curses, not a trace of anger appeared on Gao Chuan’s face, rather, he continued to draw her out step by step, "Go on, how am I a bastard?"

Too close for comfort, Jiang An fearlessly met his unwavering stare, her blush-covered face captured in the jade-like darkness of his eyes.

The light in their eyes overflowed, silently and tacitly mingling with each other’s emotions.

After a long while, the woman finally moved her lips, her voice full of grievance as she asked him, "Why didn’t you come to find me in these four years?"

The man, who had just been amused by teasing her, was suddenly taken aback at her words, his expression turning solemn, his heart wrenching.

Before he could respond, her hoarse voice reached his ears once more.

Jiang An: "You have no idea how much I’ve missed you these four years."
