Chapter 242: Chapter 238: Having No Discernment

Chapter 238: Lack of Insight

Gao Chuan did not finish work until the evening. After concluding the business, he and the secretary returned to the hotel at nine o’clock at night. The two entered the elevator together, with Secretary Chen bending over to press the floor buttons for their respective rooms. Turning to look, he saw that Gao Chuan’s brows were still furrowed. Recalling the chance encounter with Jiang An that afternoon, Secretary Chen tried to offer some comfort: "President Gao, you see I was right, Ms. Jiang was really happy to see you."

Unfortunately, she left in a hurry after just a brief encounter.

Their reflections were cast on the elevator doors in front, the blurred image showing the man loosening his shirt cuffs. His eyes were fixed on the rising floor numbers, not responding to the secretary’s words.

Since Jiang An’s return to the country and arrival in Lin City, it had been over two months. Secretary Chen had witnessed his boss move in above the girl’s apartment and then pursue her to Lin City. Unfortunately, now even the slightest interaction with Jiang An had not been achieved, and he felt anxious on his behalf.

However, he had never seen such an approach to courting a girl. It was clear he had come to Lin City over hills and rivers for her, yet stubbornly proclaimed it was a business trip.

At this rate, who knows how many years and lifetimes it would take to win the girl’s heart.

Secretary Chen covertly glanced at the impassive Gao Chuan and silently criticized him.

As the elevator was about to reach their floor, the doors opened with a "ding," and Secretary Chen stepped forward to exit, only to find Gao Chuan still standing still as a statue.

He hesitantly looked back at Gao Chuan, only to see the man still in the elevator, reaching out his hand asking for the car keys.

With a slight sigh, Secretary Chen took out the car keys from his pocket and handed them to Gao Chuan.

At this late hour, Gao Chuan going out by car, there was no need to guess where he was headed.

He must be going to sit outside the Fang Family villa again.

Just as yesterday, when the family shut them out, Gao Chuan insisted on waiting in the car with him. They ended up waiting for a full three hours without seeing Jiang An’s shadow and had to leave in disappointment.

Sometimes he really did not understand why giving Jiang An a simple call was so difficult.

Those who knew the full story called his feelings deep; those who didn’t, suspected he harbored ulterior motives.

But persuading a hopelessly lovesick man was difficult; he couldn’t be bothered to object anymore. Watching the elevator doors close once again, he let out a light sigh.

Gao Chuan rushed straight to the hotel’s underground parking lot, having booked a hotel closer to the Fang Family’s location for convenience. In less than thirty minutes, the man drove to the Fang Family’s building.

Night had fallen in Lin City, cool and desolate with light and shadows scattered. A crescent moon hung high, with a few cold stars sprinkling faint light.

He parked the car by the roadside, his gaze lifting to the villa in front of him that was not yet dark. A sense of loss momentarily filled his heart.

His gaze finally settled on the second-floor balcony, where he could dimly make out the glow of warm light.

If only Jiang An were there, he would be able to see her.

----

Suddenly, the night was pierced by a downpour. It was well into the night before Gao Chuan drove back to the hotel. The next morning he got up feeling dizzy and heavy-headed but still insisted on leaving with the secretary.

After a day’s inspection yesterday, the project was decided. Today was the day to sign the contract, and despite feeling unwell, the man still personally attended and signed the documents.

With the project secured, their business trip could also be considered complete.

But within these three days, he had only managed to see Jiang An once, clearly not achieving his real purpose for coming to Lin City.

After stepping out from the other company’s building, Secretary Chen noticed the paleness on Gao Chuan’s face and asked if he should take him to the hospital.

Gao Chuan waved him off, instructing him to drive straight back to the hotel.

The man sat in the backseat, leaning wearily against the seat behind him. Cupping his fists, he coughed lightly a few times, thinking that this business trip was nearly over. He pulled out his phone from his pocket, found Jiang An’s profile picture, and opened the chat window. His fingertips lingered on the screen for a long time, yet he typed nothing.

Eventually, he gave up and just flipped through Jiang An’s social media feed, noticing that the woman had posted an update five minutes earlier.

The picture was a selfie, with Jiang An and the young man who had greeted him with a punch that day.

The caption read: Having a brother to go shopping with is just great.

Looking at the two people pulling faces in the photo, he curled his lips slightly into a smile. After noticing the address tagged below, his eyes suddenly lit up. He ordered Secretary Chen to drive to that mall.

At this moment, Jiang An was strolling in a shopping mall with her brother, Fang Mo. At first, Fang Mo had claimed he was eager to carry her shopping, yet it wasn’t long before he started to complain about being tired. Jiang An tapped his head teasingly, playfully questioning what he would do if he had a girlfriend in the future.

Having no other choice, she arranged for the young man to wait in the rest area.

It was supposed to be a brother and sister outing at the mall, but now she was alone again.

Jiang An moved on to the clothing area on the second floor and walked into a shoe store. While she was selecting high heels, two men in suits and leather shoes suddenly entered the shop, full of female customers, and made a beeline towards her after scanning the place.

Jiang An turned her head and saw Gao Chuan and Chen Mi approaching her, standing dumbstruck in place.

It was Chen Mi who greeted her first, speaking with a touch of embarrassment, "Ms. Jiang, what a coincidence to see you here at the mall too!"

He scratched his head, his gaze shifting between Gao Chuan and Jiang An.

Jiang An, observing the two out-of-place men, couldn’t help but laugh, puzzled, "Are you... here to buy high heels?"

The two men, who had intended to pretend to bump into her accidentally, were suddenly at a loss for words, with Chen Mi stammering without being able to utter a complete sentence.

Gao Chuan, noting that Jiang An was alone in the store, asked directly, "Came here by yourself?"

He had thought that he would encounter her irascible and difficult brother here.

Jiang An’s gaze returned to the shoe rack beside her, and she casually replied, "My brother is downstairs."

She turned and picked out a pair of kitten heels, gesturing to a nearby clerk to bring her a pair to try on.

Jiang An paid no more attention to the two men and sat down to try on the shoes.

Gao Chuan silently followed and stood by, watching the woman try on the pair of strappy high heels.

The clerk kept extolling the comfort and beauty of the shoes to Jiang An, who put them on and stood up to turn a couple of circles in front of the mirror.

When it came to buying shoes, she always prioritized comfort first and style second. The pair she was wearing felt a bit tight, so she feigned reluctance, "They don’t seem to look that good."

At that comment, the clerk became anxious and began praising how stunning she looked in them, in an attempt to persuade her not to give up. But Jiang An, who had planned to forgo them, sat down again to take them off.

Seeing that Jiang An was losing interest, the clerk noticed Gao Chuan standing by and earnestly suggested, "Sir, look how good your wife looks in these shoes. Please buy them; they’re quite a bargain too."

Gao Chuan, unexpectedly cued by the clerk’s words, froze for a moment, his mind filled with the terms "sir" and "wife," and his heart immediately burst with joy.

Easily led by the clerk, he commanded, "Wrap them up."

Jiang An: "..."

Completely lacking in subtlety.
