Chapter 231 I Get Jealous

A few days later.

Due to some accounting issues in the company, Gao Chuan had been tied up at work, spending two days to uncover an employee embezzling funds. The man erupted into a fury during the meeting, his face terrifyingly stern.

As usual, he stayed in the office until eight o’clock before standing up to leave.

Thinking of how he had been too busy with work in the past few days to bring anything to Jiang An, the man decided to drive to the dessert shop he had found earlier, only to find it closed. Sitting in his car, he could not help but frown, a shadow falling over his resolute face as he silently drove home.

Along the way, neon lights were flickering, and a gentle evening breeze was blowing, but the man’s brows showed no sign of smoothing out.

He parked his car, trudged upstairs with his weary body, loosening the tight tie at his chest as he walked, unknowingly arriving at Jiang An’s house, where a firmly shut door stood before him.

The dim light from the corridor fell on his head as he paused to stare at the cold door for a few seconds, the light in his eyes dimming by half.

After a while, Gao Chuan turned around, continuing upstairs to his own door and pulled out his keys.

Entering his home, he habitually reached for the switch by the door to turn on the living room lights, but with a "click", the expected brightness did not come, and repeated pressing proved futile.

Barely able to see, he made his way into the bedroom and found the lights there wouldn’t turn on either. He frowned, using the light from his phone to check the balance for the water and electricity bills—there was no issue.

Already irritated and restless because of work, the man collapsed onto the sofa in the pitch-dark room and let out a soft sigh, closing his eyes and leaning back in fatigue.

After sitting in silence, something seemed to occur to him. His eyes suddenly snapped open, and using the faint light from his phone, he got up and went downstairs.

He came back to Jiang An’s door and instinctively rang the doorbell.

After several "ding-dongs," someone finally came to open the door.

"Why is it you?" A deep voice immediately followed, Gao Chuan too was taken aback upon seeing the man before him.

Wei Yan still held the door open, dumbfounded as he stared at Gao Chuan standing at the doorway.

A weak light enveloped the man, his features showing signs of weariness, underscored by dark circles under his eyes.

"What are you doing here?" Wei Yan questioned him, his tone clearly showing annoyance.

Gao Chuan didn’t bother responding, his face cold as he asked, "Where’s Jiang An?"

Unexpectedly, Wei Yan advanced angrily to grab his collar, fury blazing in his eyes, "Why are you still looking for her? Want to harm her again?"

The men’s chests pressed against each other, Gao Chuan catching Wei Yan’s fierce gaze. Just as he was about to push him away, Jiang An emerged from the room and quickly intervened, pulling them apart and shouting, "Brother Wei Yan, what are you doing, let go!"

Wei Yan reluctantly released the collar, turning his head to look at Jiang An, "Why is he here? Has he come to harass you again?"

At this moment, Jiang An was still holding onto the man’s arm, her expression somewhat panicked, as she tried to calm the situation: "Brother Wei Yan, go inside, I can handle this."

She then started pushing Wei Yan back inside until he relented. Glancing back at Gao Chuan standing to the side, he finally stepped inside.

Jiang An closed the door anxiously, turned around, and saw Gao Chuan who had remained silent the whole time, standing under the dim light, his face somewhat pale.

The noise from the argument quickly receded, and the corridor returned to its usual silence.

"What’s the matter?" Jiang An looked up at the man who seemed a bit disheartened in front of her and asked.

"My electricity went out at home, I came to borrow a candle," the man replied with a calm tone, as if the conflict with Wei Yan earlier had never existed.

Jiang An didn’t want to keep entangled with him at the door, she turned and went back into the room, and returned a few minutes later with two candles for him, "Here you go."

Gao Chuan took the candles from her hand, watching Jiang An about to go inside, he suddenly asked, "Why is he here?"

Hearing his question, a dazed look flashed across Jiang An’s eyes, she slightly turned back and said directly, "Who’s at my house has nothing to do with you."

Hearing this, Gao Chuan clenched the candles in his hand a bit tighter, a chill filled his clear eyes.

Indeed, he was just a suitor now, without any right to inquire about her male friends.

As Jiang An watched the silent man in front of her and tried to open the door to go in, she suddenly heard his deep voice from behind.

Gao Chuan: "I get jealous."

Jiang An’s movement to open the door stiffened suddenly, she felt an involuntary panic inside, turning back she saw the man’s innocent yet earnest face, her cheeks instantly flushing red, stammering as if she were rushing to distance herself from him, "What does it matter to me if you are jealous..."

"Don’t come here again," the woman ordered furiously, then turned and quickly entered her house.

Leaving the man standing outside like a statue, standing in stunned silence for a long time before he turned to leave.

Once Jiang An got back home, she inevitably faced Wei Yan’s interrogation.

Wei Yan had rushed over tonight to tell her he had news about Fang Qing’s family, but seeing her still in contact with Gao Chuan, he became instantly furious.

It took Jiang An much effort to coax Wei Yan into calming down, she knew the man was angry because he was worried she would get hurt again.

Lying in bed at night, she couldn’t help but think about everything that had happened recently, she was more and more unable to see through Gao Chuan, let alone understand her own feelings.

She naturally noticed the man was earnestly pursuing her over this period, but such a lingering connection was not the outcome she had wanted when she returned to the country.

After much contemplation alone, she ultimately decided to sever this tie.

---

The next day.

After work, Jiang An directly arranged to meet Gao Chuan at a coffee shop, and when she arrived, she found the man already seated in a corner.

Noticing the woman’s hasty seating, the man who had been looking down at his phone finally raised his eyes, and his expression subtly darkened upon seeing raindrops on Jiang An’s face due to the light rain outside.

"Do you want anything to drink?" He reached out to pass the menu to Jiang An, but she refused with a lift of her hand.

"Dr. Gao, the main reason I asked to meet you is to make things clear," the woman went straight to the point.

"I know we shared a year together, and we may have grown to rely on each other. If you feel guilty about what happened back then and want to make it up to me in this way, I think there’s no need for that anymore," Jiang An said, her head lowered, not daring to look him in the eye.

Four years later, the past hurt was unearthed once again, emotions surged in her heart, and unknowingly, tears welled up in her eyes.

"Jiang An..." Gao Chuan couldn’t help calling out her name.

"I’ve never blamed you, so you don’t need to take responsibility for it anymore. From now on... you don’t have to do that anymore," the woman’s voice was choked with sobs, piercing into Gao Chuan’s ears rather sharply.

So was she trying to completely sever their relationship?
