Chapter 228: Chapter 224: Until I Catch Up to You
Chapter 224: I Will Pursue You Until You Agree
The night was thick, a crescent moon revealing its tiny tip, everything lying in the semi-brightness and semi-darkness, eerily quiet all around.
Under the silence, Gao Chuan lowered his gaze onto the woman’s indifferent face, his brows furrowed slightly, then suddenly lowered his voice and said, "Jiang An, starting from tomorrow, I will pursue you."
The slightly hoarse voice mingled with the crisp wind brushed past Jiang An’s ear, the woman stunned momentarily, her eyes tinted with confusion.
What did he say? He wants to pursue her?
The dim light fell on the faces of the two, the tall man looking down at her from above, his face still calm and composed even as he spoke such ambiguous words.
"You said before that our marriage lacks emotional foundation, and the absence of a normal courting process disappoints you. From now on, I won’t force you anymore," Gao Chuan began timidly, his magnetic voice finally settling.
"From tomorrow, I will pursue you."
Jiang An lifted her head to meet his gaze, a tide of emotions churning in her chest, her heartbeat pounding chaotically against her eardrums.
A sense of unreality infiltrated her heart, dreamlike and illusory.
She suddenly recalled the man’s words from years ago, "Let’s get married," spoken with the same calm tone, the same unperturbed demeanour.
That year, she had fallen for it, step by step entrapped in his cage, and when she left, she was bruised all over.
Gao Chuan took in the dubious look of the woman before him and continued to speak, "I will pursue you methodically, until you accept."
The man’s voice was cool and emotionless, yet his eyes were filled with resolute light, as if he was determined to win.
Jiang An came to her senses, her beautiful eyes narrowing slightly, her lips curving into a slight arc, a cold sneer hanging there as she uttered, "And what if I don’t agree?"
The woman’s indifferent voice reached his ear, and Gao Chuan standing in place, furrowed his brows and said warmly, "I will continue to pursue."
Pursue until you agree.
Jiang An listened to the man’s straightforward words, the smile on her face growing colder, a desolate emotion flooding her eyes.
He still understood nothing, in the end, he arrogantly assumed that she would surely return to his side.
But how would a bird that has once fallen into a trap choose to fly into the flames again?
——
The next morning, Jiang An went to work at the hospital with dark circles under her eyes, and as soon as she arrived at the front desk, she was stopped by a young nurse who handed her a bunch of roses from the desk, her tone not without admiration, "Dr. Jiang, there are flowers for you."
"Dr. Jiang, your boyfriend is so romantic!" Another young nurse nearby saw the big bunch of roses and her eyes lit up, cozying up to take a sniff.
Jiang An took the flowers, stood there dazed, and upon hearing the nurse’s words, she muttered to herself in denial, "I didn’t know I had a boyfriend."
The young nurse’s eyes lit up as she exclaimed, "That must be the person pursuing you, sending flowers all the way to the hospital."
"Stop gossiping and focus on your work." Jiang An gently tapped on her head as she took the flowers and walked towards her office.
While walking, she picked up the card tucked into the flowers. There was no written message, just a simple appellation: "To Little Ostrich."
The woman’s gaze flickered. She returned to her office, casually placed the flowers aside, and hurriedly put on her white coat to head to the outpatient clinic.
She was busy with outpatient consultations all morning, and by the time she finished, it was almost noon. Anticipating a surgery in the afternoon, she ordered a takeout meal to eat in her office. After quickly finishing her meal, she stepped out to discard her trash, then turned back and noticed the roses she had left in the corner earlier. Hesitating for a few seconds, she went directly over and threw the entire bouquet into the trash bin outside.
She remembered Gao Chuan’s words from yesterday about pursuing her, still expecting the man to remain as inactive as before. Unexpectedly, the flowers were delivered directly to her office.
Yet, she would not accept them.
Recently, Jiang An had several surgeries to perform, and she immersed herself fully into work, gradually ceasing to think about the matter. However, Gao Chuan kept sending flowers to the department, and quite a few doctors and nurses had started gossiping.
The claim was to pursue someone, but it involved merely sending dry flowers, with no personal appearance.
Jiang An, on each occasion, would unfeelingly throw the flowers in the trash bin, watching some young female nurses happily take them for themselves, her face showing no hint of reluctance.
The nurses at the reception had already started wild speculations about the identity of the flower sender. The gossip reached Jiang An’s ears, becoming absurd enough that there were even rumors of her being kept by a wealthy benefactor - after all, sending ninety-nine roses daily indicated a considerably solid financial background.
Still, Jiang An remained intensely focused on her work, paying no attention to the gossip.
It wasn’t until about a week later that the person sending flowers finally made an appearance at the hospital.
After wrapping up a business deal, Gao Chuan had just flown back from overseas and rushed straight to Jiang An’s hospital without stopping. Knowing that she finished work at six o’clock, he waited at the entrance, holding flowers.
The man, dressed in a finely tailored bespoke suit, stood upright next to his car, looking handsome and attracting many sideways glances.
Yet, he seemed to be completely indifferent, glancing down at his expensive watch. A quarter past six had passed, but there was still no sign of the woman at the hospital entrance.
The secretary who had been sitting in the car watched his boss’s persistent wait at the entrance, the straight figure in sight evoking a somewhat heartfelt sadness.
Since the day the old master had forced Gao Chuan to take a position in the Gao Family business, he had been by Gao Chuan’s side. Two years may not be long, but through close daily interaction, he had come to understand Gao Chuan’s temperament. To outsiders, he was as cold as ice, but inside, he harbored the sincerity of a child.
He had once been curious why Gao Chuan had remained single for so many years. One day, after picking up a drunken Gao Chuan, he heard the man constantly mentioning a woman’s name on the way home – only then did he realize that there was someone in his boss’s heart.
Her name was Jiang An, referred to by the Gao Family as a simple-minded young lady, who had a brief one-year marriage with Gao Chuan.
He didn’t know what had transpired between the two, but from his perspective, he knew that Gao Chuan had been thinking of that girl for a full four years.
Finally, having completed the recent batch of surgeries, Jiang An could breathe a sigh of relief. After entering her office and checking her phone, she learned about a department dinner that evening. She took off her white coat, changed into her clothes, prepared to leave work, and encountered two young nurses who were also heading to the dinner, so she left with them.
The three walked out of the hospital, chatting and laughing when Jiang An looked up and saw a figure approaching her from a distance, causing her expression to stiffen.
