Chapter 223: Chapter 219: In a Complete Mess

Chapter 219: Mind in Turmoil

The day after Jiang An moved into her new home, Ji Wanwan brought Gao Yan to visit, and as soon as the door opened, the child rushed in to hug her.

While they were affectionately cuddling, Ji Wanwan, holding a bunch of stuff, walked around the apartment to have a look.

Jiang An rented a duplex apartment with a relatively simple decoration style, a simple one-bedroom and one-living room setup. Although small in size, it had all the essentials and seemed reasonably satisfactory on the surface.

Ji Wanwan brought a lot of ingredients, and the two adults started to busy themselves in the kitchen, leaving the child alone in the living room watching cartoons.

Ji Wanwan burst into loud laughter when she learned that Shen Mei wanted to acknowledge her as a goddaughter the day before; her uninhibited laughter echoed through the kitchen.

Jiang An was almost frightened by it and also curved her lips into a smile. She was equally amused hearing Shen Mei’s proposal yesterday and never expected the elderly couple to like her so much.

"Looks like Ms. Shen really wants to treat you well, did you agree?" Finally calming down, Ji Wanwan turned around and glanced at Jiang An, asking curiously.

"Of course not." Jiang An replied decisively, worried that agreeing would further complicate their relationships.

Ji Wanwan chuckled softly again, "I guess the old lady still cares about you as her daughter-in-law and wants you to visit them more often."

"But honestly, Jiang An, tell me the truth, do you and Gao Chuan still have a chance?" The woman paused for a while, then suddenly asked her.

Jiang An was washing the greens, but when she heard Ji Wanwan’s question, she abruptly stopped. The cold water ran down her delicate fingers, dripping onto the vegetables covered in water drops.

After a moment of silence, she continued washing the vegetables and answered calmly, "No."

"Have you really let go?" Ji Wanwan was relentless, looking at the woman’s back and continued to ask.

"Mhm."

As soon as she finished speaking, the woman turned around and clung to Jiang An’s shoulder, her words filled with eagerness: "Then you should go on a blind date!"

Jiang An: "?"

"I have a lot of eligible bachelors ready to be introduced to you," Ji Wanwan said, her eyes shining.

Jiang An paused, her voice trembling slightly, "No... there’s no need."

"Why not, you’re not getting any younger, you need to find a man!" Ji Wanwan pinched the woman’s fair cheek and maliciously provoked, "If you don’t go, it means you’re still holding onto Gao Chuan!"

Jiang An was momentarily ashamed and tried to rebut, but all her excuses were smartly refuted by Ji Wanwan’s quick wit. She never expected to eventually be talked into agreeing to Ji Wanwan’s request to arrange a blind date.

When Ji Wanwan without further ado pushed her WeChat to her, she finally realized.

It was a trap.

Three days later.

Gao Chuan returned from his business trip; the plane landed at three o’clock in the afternoon.

Secretary Chen had been waiting at the airport early to pick him up and take him back to the company, as the man had been abroad discussing acquisitions and many tasks had piled up domestically.

Gao Chuan got in the car and immediately started working on the emails he missed over the past few days, while the secretary sitting in the driver’s seat briefly reported his schedule for the next couple of days.

"The president will hold a shareholders’ meeting tomorrow to decide on Manager Xu’s future."

"The press conference for the acquisition of Chang Kong is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow afternoon."

"Young Master Song also visited you these past couple of days."

He was met with silence in response.

Secretary Chen couldn’t help but look through the rearview mirror at Gao Chuan in the back seat, who was intently focused on his work. After a pause, he continued to report: "Ms. Jiang has already started working at the hospital, and she also rented an apartment in the city center."

The man, still with his eyes fixed on the computer screen, suddenly froze upon hearing this. Finally, his deep eyes under the gold-rimmed glasses stirred, and he said faintly, "Send me the address."

The man rushed back to the company non-stop and continued to bury himself in the work at hand.

For nearly a week, he had been engaging in a battle of wits with a foreign company overseas, eventually securing a significant acquisition for the Gao Family. The continuous heavy workload had left the man utterly exhausted.

Time quietly passed, and night gradually fell.

It was nearly eight o’clock when the man finally finished reviewing the report at hand. He took off his glasses with a tired expression, closed his eyes, and rested his head against the back of the chair for a while.

A soft light poured down from above, his short, tousled hair and the sharp, clear lines of his face illuminated.

His life had always been like this, busy and dull, whether as a doctor or managing a company.

It was a loneliness that tugged at the heartstrings.

After a moment, the man picked up his coat, stood up, and walked downstairs, glancing at the time showing on his watch before frowning quietly.

He drove his car away from the company, and before he knew it, he arrived at the new apartment Jiang An had rented, as per the address given by the secretary.

Since their last confrontation in the bar, he had hurriedly left the country and had not seen her since.

He felt strange; he had waited four years, yet this week seemed particularly long. The first thought he had after finishing his work was an eager desire to see Jiang An.

Street lamps lit up, soft moonlight enchanting, sparse stars embedded in the night sky, faintly visible.

A gentle breeze blew by, softly caressing the man’s forehead, bringing a cool relief to his heart.

Gao Chuan arrived under Jiang An’s apartment building and parked his car under a French parasol tree on the street.

With early summer approaching, faint cicada chirps reached his ears, mingling with the rustling of leaves overhead.

Although the secretary had provided an exact apartment number, the man still sat silently in his car, making no move to get out.

He remembered the words Jiang An had said to him that day, telling him not to interfere in her life anymore.

If he went to her directly now, it would only make her dislike him more.

The man was deep in thought when suddenly a sound of brakes came from the street. He slightly furrowed his brows and quietly looked up.

The apartment was located in a relatively secluded area, and at this hour, there were not many people around. A conspicuous black Bentley parked right at the building entrance. Within a few seconds, a man in a suit got out from the driver’s seat and walked around to help a woman out of the car.

The two stood in front of the car, the woman dressed in a pale blue long dress, holding flowers, conversing with the man with a laugh before turning to go up the stairs.

Sitting in the car, Gao Chuan could hear their conversation because the Bentley had parked right in front of him.

He heard Jiang An’s voice, and his expression instantly became stern.

"Thank you for today, Mr. Gu. I’ll treat you next time."

"Ms. Jiang, you are too courteous. I’m honored that you accepted my invitation."

"Well... I’m going up now, Mr. Gu. Good night."

"Good night."

The man known as "Mr. Gu" stood watching Jiang An go up before reluctantly driving away.

Gao Chuan waited until the black Bentley had left the intersection, and the street regained its calm. He sat silently in the car, looking out at the increasingly thick night outside, his eyes indiscernible and troubled.

His heart was in turmoil.
