Chapter 208 Jiang An Leaves
In the love of this world, I have already beheld you. — Tagore
Upon hearing the news of their divorce, Gao Lin flew into a rage, immediately calling Gao Chuan to the house for a severe reprimand.
The elder had just been admitted to the hospital for a heart condition a few days prior, and now, upon learning of Gao Chuan’s divorce from Jiang An, he nearly went into shock once more.
Initially, when Gao Chuan brought Jiang An home as his impromptu bride, everyone in the family was taken aback. However, over the year, the young girl had taken care of the family wholeheartedly and considerately, winning people’s hearts with her sensible and filial behavior. Gao Lin and Shen Mei knew that Jiang An had married into the Gao Family quietly and at a disadvantage; they had long since come to view the girl as their own daughter.
Who would have thought that these two would divorce without so much as a heads-up?
Ridiculous! Truly ridiculous!
"Go find Jiang An and bring her back to me!" The old master pointed at him, his anger uncontrollable.
Shen Mei, worried that Gao Lin might have another episode, hastily helped him to sit down on the sofa. While comforting her husband, she turned her head and earnestly said, "I don’t care what method you use, hurry up and bring Anan back. Our Gao Family only acknowledges her as our daughter-in-law."
Shen Mei had also tried to look for Jiang An before. The young girl was still polite to her but no longer as affectionate as she had been before.
When it came to Jiang An’s miscarriage, the Gao Family ultimately owed her.
It takes the setter of a bell to untie it; in their eyes, only their son could personally win the young girl back.
But they never expected that Gao Chuan would go directly to Jiang An and get the divorce certificate, which is why he was steaming with anger.
After a long while, the man was able to leave the house. Outside, the city lights had just been lit, bright and clear.
He stood outside the door and smoked a cigarette before driving away. On the way, he got a phone call.
After the call connected, Song Li’s voice came through the Bluetooth headset.
On the call, the man sounded anxious, telling him excitedly that he had found out about Jiang An’s flight out of Jing City for tomorrow and urged him to take the opportunity to pursue Jiang An.
"Bro, this might be your last chance. Once little sister-in-law leaves, she might not be back for good. Hurry and keep her here!"
The man’s expression remained indifferent upon hearing this, casually acknowledging with a "Got it."
Such advice had been flooding Gao Chuan’s ears to the point of irritation these past few days.
Hearing Song Li still going on and on in the call, he simply hung up the phone.
Finally quiet in the car, the man lowered the window a bit and a gentle breeze Qing Feng brushed across his forehead, easing his irritation.
Everyone advised him to win Jiang An back, but they never considered that letting her go was also painful for him.
Just as Ji Wanwan had stated, Jiang An had already sacrificed so much for him; what right did he have to interfere with her life again? And so, powerless, he could only watch her leave.
Lost in thought, the man unexpectedly found himself outside Jiang An’s apartment block. He parked the car downstairs, and looking up at the building that was now pitch black, a chill settled in his eyes.
He only knew which floor Jiang An lived on but could not figure out which particular window was hers. In the end, he could only wait until all the lights in the building were out before driving away.
Returning home alone late at night, the man flipped on the lights in the entryway. The sudden bright light instantly illuminated the whole room, stabbing his eyes with pain.
The vast room was empty, without a single sound.
It wasn’t until this moment that he finally realized, after a year, this home was his alone once again.
Stepping into the living room, he casually tossed his coat onto the couch and turned around out of habit, only to see the usual figure that would wait for him on the sofa had vanished.
He couldn’t count how many starlit nights he’d come home exhausted to find Jiang An asleep on the sofa, having waited up for him. He’d silently pick her up in his arms, and before he could step into the bedroom, the girl would wake with a drowsy murmur of "Dr. Gao" before falling back asleep nestled in his embrace.
Recalling those past scenes, the man turned his gaze away forlornly, only then to realize that Jiang An’s presence lingered everywhere in the house, everywhere bore the traces she had left behind.
Memories rustled, silently stirring the heartstrings.
He remembered the first time they watched a movie in the dark like a couple, the girl sobbing into his chest from the heartbreaking scenes, him passing tissues in a fluster, and only after Jiang An settled her emotions did he lower his head to kiss her passionately.
He remembered how many radiant mornings when he first opened his eyes, he’d see the girl’s peaceful slumber. He’d secretly kiss her forehead, then leave the bed and head downstairs to buy Xiao Long Bao, Jiang An’s favorite.
He remembered the enchanting nights when they entwined in bed, the girl already exhausted and sweating from his torment, yet he persistently kissed her feverish skin, coaxing Jiang An to cry out his name repeatedly.
Unfortunately, such scenes would probably never occur again.
He had been too careless. He had lost her, and she was never coming back.
Walking into the bedroom Jiang An once stayed in, he found everything was packed away neatly, her meticulous tidiness restoring the room to its original state, leaving no room for sentiment.
Gao Chuan walked slowly by the bedside, bending down only when he noticed a coffee-colored teddy bear in the corner, picking it up in silence.
It must have been left behind by Jiang An, he guessed.
Looking at the worn teddy bear, he suddenly fantasized about Jiang An snuggling up to him in sleep. A flicker of emotion finally passed through his expression.
He didn’t know how long it took before he fell into a groggy sleep on the bed, with the toy bear placed back by the bedside.
Jiang An’s flight was at nine o’clock the next day, and both Wei Yan and Xia Zi rushed to the airport to see her off.
Knowing she might not return for some time, Xia Zi clung to her tightly, reluctant to let go, nagging her with a series of admonitions.
Wei Yan was much calmer, aware of Jiang An’s stubbornness and unwillingness to accept further assistance, his expression momentarily helpless.
"All right, it’s not like I’m not coming back. I’ll call you guys as soon as I get there," Jiang An reassured them as she saw their long faces.
The airport bustled with people waving farewell. Pulling her suitcase, Jiang An looked back at the two who still stood in place, gave them a quick wave, then walked on with a smile on her lips.
As the plane ascended, the figures below shrank to dots and then vanished.
The girl gazed out the window at the spreading mist, sunlight filtering through gaps and bathing her in warmth.
This time, she finally learned to say goodbye with a smile.
Determined to leave, Jiang An might never know that at this very moment, Gao Chuan was outside the airport, watching the sky, witnessing her departure.
With ties in his heart, this goodbye was ultimately a long journey yet to unfold.
