Chapter 199: Jiang An, No Divorce

The evening in late spring was gentle and warm, the bright moonlight enveloped the world as if it was a thin fog woven from silver yarn.

The driver responsible for the recent accident had been arrested by the police, and Jiang An had been busy dealing with the case these last two days. In the afternoon, she was called to the police station again.

The responsibility for the accident lay entirely with the offending driver, whose momentary lapse resulted in the loss of two lives, including that of the taxi driver and the child in Jiang An’s womb.

The situation of the taxi driver’s family was even more desperate, with elderly parents and young children at home, and a daughter in her senior year of high school to boot. With the loss of the family’s breadwinner, the household was robbed of its hope.

Jiang An forced herself not to think about these heartbreaking things anymore. Just as she took out her pajamas from the closet and was about to take a shower, she suddenly heard a "thump thump" knocking at the door.

Who could it be at this late hour? Jiang An walked to the door, wondering.

The moment she turned the lock, she saw Gao Chuan leaning against the door frame, his head lowered, wearing only a thin black shirt. He slowly looked up, noticing that the door had opened, and his towering shadow immediately enveloped Jiang An who stood inside.

"Dr. Gao?" Jiang An instinctively reacted upon seeing the man.

The next second, Gao Chuan smiled at her, took a step forward, and hugged her. The man was so tall that his entire body pressed down on her, leaving Jiang An frozen on the spot.

Suddenly, a hoarse voice whispered in her ear, tenderly calling her name.

"Jiang An..."

Smelling the strong alcohol on the man’s breath, Jiang An realized that Gao Chuan was probably drunk.

"Dr. Gao, you’re drunk," Jiang An felt the pressure of the man leaning on her and coldly stated the fact.

She didn’t expect Gao Chuan to come to her; she thought that the divorce agreement she had let go of would have ended everything.

At this moment, Dr. Gao leaned on her shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of jasmine from the girl, and his icy demeanor finally softened, as he murmured in retort, "I’m not drunk."

Drunkards always say they’re not drunk. Jiang An couldn’t bother to argue with him, feeling almost suffocated under the man’s weight, she patted his back directly and commanded, "Let go of me first."

The man kept his head buried in the crook of her shoulder, silently grasping Jiang An’s hand.

"Jiang An, I’ll never let you go." The man was already bleary-eyed and finally stepped back from Jiang An to stand up straight, his gaze falling on their clasped hands, his dark eyes suddenly brimming with tenderness.

The hallway light was dim; the man stood with his back to it, casting faint shadows across his eyes and brow.

Jiang An looked at the man before her, filled with deep affection, and her heart skipped a beat. If it weren’t for her past with Gao Chuan, she might have believed that the man had truly loved her for many years.

"Jiang An, that day I was performing a surgery at the hospital and couldn’t make it to the coffee shop," Gao Chuan began to explain, one sentence at a time.

"Song Xin has been a friend since childhood, she liked me, but I rejected her six years ago. I went to Switzerland for an experiment and didn’t have much interaction with her; we never slept together."

"I’ve only ever been with you," the man still habitually pinched her hand, and his magnetic voice finally settled.

He said, "Jiang An, let’s not divorce, okay?"

Jiang An felt the warmth from her palm and silently listened to the man’s speech, her eyes gradually reddening without her noticing.

Had these words been spoken half a month earlier, how happy would I have been back then? she thought.

But the Jiang An of now is no longer the one who used to take everything to heart—no longer the Jiang An who could easily be convinced to bow her head with just a few words.

The matter between her and Dr. Gao was no longer as simple as it used to be.

"Let go of me first." After a moment of silence, Jiang An tried to pull her hand away, but, as expected, the man gripped it tightly.

He had said he would never let go of her.

"You first promise me we won’t divorce." Gao Chuan gripped her hand tight, his expression already softened, truly resembling someone begging for the first time.

"Stop it, you’re drunk." Jiang An reached out with her other hand trying to wrestle her hand free from Gao Chuan’s grip.

"I’m not drunk, I don’t want a divorce." His hand clung to hers as if glued, refusing to let go.

"Jiang An, I won’t divorce." Gao Chuan repeated, stubbornly pulling her hand towards him, leaning in as he spoke.

When had the usually aloof man ever been so annoying and persistent? Unable to escape, Jiang An lifted her head helplessly and looked at the man in front of her, letting out a helpless sigh.

"Let’s talk about the divorce tomorrow when you’re sober..."

"I am sober right now!" The man interrupted her, loudly and insistently arguing.

Jiang An looked at the man in front of her, ridiculously drunk, and found it somehow amusing that he was holding on to her and not letting go.

Where had he been all this time?

If he truly cared for her, he wouldn’t have left her alone in China without a word after they argued, and if he really cared about their marriage, he wouldn’t have gone half a month without any explanation.

To cherish only after losing is an inherent human nature; he was just accustomed to a life with her. This kind of habit could happen with anyone.

"Go back first, and we can talk about this tomorrow." Jiang An only wanted to free herself from his restraints, and so she advised calmly.

Always holding her hand like this couldn’t be the solution.

"If you don’t divorce, I’ll let go of you." Gao Chuan today was undoubtedly embodying the word ’rogue’ to the fullest.

Jiang An looked at the man’s childish demeanor, her brows tightly knitted—if she didn’t agree, who knew how long he would keep troubling her.

"Let’s negotiate about the divorce later; let go of me for now." Jiang An compromised.

"Really? You won’t divorce me?" The man’s expression turned wistful, a glimmer of hope shining in his eyes upon hearing Jiang An’s words.

She really shouldn’t have opened the door for him, Jiang An regretted.

"Mm, let go of me first." To stop the man from further pestering her, she could only relent for the moment.

"Then come home with me." The man’s eyes brightened with joy upon hearing her, and he immediately started pulling Jiang An down the stairs.

Jiang An, staring at the man who had reversed his position, felt her eyes tremble violently; naturally, she couldn’t go home with him and struggled to say: "Go back first, we’ll talk tomorrow!"

The two were still entangled when Gao Chuan suddenly let go of her and turned to vomit, and seizing the opportunity, Jiang An quickly slipped through the door. She had intended to simply lock the man out, but turning to see him crouching and retching bitterly, she ultimately didn’t have the heart to leave him out there alone.

Jiang An stepped forward to help him into the house. The man repeated while huddled over the toilet, still muttering, "Don’t divorce, Jiang An."

"Don’t divorce."
