Chapter 192: A Thorough Loss
The car arrived at the hotel just after ten o’clock at night.
Gao Chuan was slightly drunk, but not to the point of inebriation, and he stepped out of the car into the night, his strong facial features softened by the gentle warmth.
Entering the elevator on his way to his room, fatigue overwhelmed him as he thought of the early flight he had to catch, his face showing signs of weariness.
Upon returning to his room, he habitually took off his shirt. Gao Chuan was about to turn around to grab his pajamas when he suddenly noticed a subtle movement on the bed. He stared for a few seconds before walking forward, and, indeed, there was a slight bulge in the blanket, as if someone were hiding beneath it.
A shadow passed over the man’s face as he stood by the bed and commanded harshly, "Come out!"
At that moment, Song Xin, shivering under the blanket, heard the man’s stern voice from outside, which disrupted her original plan and sent her into a panic.
Gao Chuan, noting no response from within, turned slightly, a headache coming on. His voice, devoid of emotion, rose again, "Come out now. Do not make me say it a third time."
As his words fell, a few seconds passed before a woman clad in a deep red lace nightgown suddenly flipped off the blanket and threw herself at Gao Chuan, standing by the bed, desperate to press her body against his.
Without a word, the woman tried to wrap her arms around the man’s neck and kiss him, her body heat intense, her cheeks flushed, revealing a generous view of her chest.
Gao Chuan, realizing the sudden movement, quickly pushed away the woman beside him. Song Xin, no match for his strength, was tossed onto the bed by the man and cried out in pain as she landed on the mattress.
Gao Chuan, looking down with condescension at the woman sprawled on the bed with disheveled hair, eyes aflame with anger, barked, "Song Xin, have you lost your mind!"
Song Xin lay weakly at the head of the man’s bed, realizing his aversion to her, and slowly sat up. Her beautiful face was full of resentment as she raised her head and shouted at him, "Yes, I’ve gone mad."
"I just wanted you to sleep with me," she said, a harsh glint in her eyes, her voice sinking.
Nobody knew how much courage she had gathered to make this decision. She was, of course, aware of how absurd her actions were, but she was willing to use any means to win over this man.
But now, it was obvious she had failed, utterly and completely.
"Gao Chuan, I’ve given you twenty years of adoration. Why won’t you even glance at me?" The woman sat cross-legged on the bed, her voice full of sorrow and tears swirling in the corners of her eyes.
What had she done wrong to deserve such cruelty?
All she did was unwaveringly like someone.
The lighting in the room wasn’t very bright. Gao Chuan stood still, watching the woman on the bed sobbing uncontrollably, his dark pupils still edged with coldness.
Rejecting Song Xin had been a matter of years past, and he hadn’t expected her to remain so obstinately delusional.
"Song Xin, I have made myself clear, even if I weren’t married, I would not marry you," the man’s voice was cold, seemingly not wanting to leave her even a shred of hope.
Whether it was the shame of being caught or the frustration of rejection, Song Xin froze on the bed, a layer of desolation welling up in her eyes upon hearing Gao Chuan’s ruthless words.
"You think I somehow don’t know about the little games you’ve been playing behind my back because I haven’t said anything. Since you joined the hospital with ulterior motives, go and resign yourself after you return; don’t make me take action," Gao Chuan turned his head aside, a sharp chill flashing through his eyes.
He had ignored her previous indiscretions out of respect for Song Li, but that didn’t mean he would tolerate them forever.
Moreover, she had tampered with Jiang An.
Knowing well who was behind Jiang An’s inexplicable quarrel with him, he thought this woman would restrain herself, but she had made yet another scene.
This time, Song Xin had crossed his bottom line.
The woman, hearing Gao Chuan’s threat, felt her pupils contract sharply.
So he had always known what she was up to.
She felt like she was absolutely a fool in front of him.
"Don’t show up in front of Jiang An ever again." The man commanded one last sentence before turning around to pick up his jacket that he had tossed aside, slipping into it with swift movements.
Just as he was about to step out of the room, he heard Song Xin crying and questioning him from behind: "You’ve fallen for her, haven’t you?"
The man’s steps faltered ever so slightly, then he left the room without answering her question.
But for Song Xin, everything had already become crystal clear.
In the room, the woman’s heart-wrenching sobs slowly echoed, as she lay flat on the bed, letting her scalding tears gradually soak through the bedsheets beneath her.
She had lost, utterly and completely.
-------------------------------------
Jiang An stayed in the hospital for over a week before she was discharged, during which time she missed Xia Zi’s wedding and was bombarded with calls from her friends.
Unable to withstand Xia Zi’s inquiries, Jiang An had no choice but to tell her that she missed the wedding because she was in the hospital.
Xia Zi took time to come to visit her, only to learn about all that had happened in that brief week.
After hearing about all that Jiang An had gone through, Xia Zi hugged her and cried with heartache.
Jiang An handed her tissues while asking her to let go, assuring her that she was okay now.
So many days had passed, she had thought about a lot - the baby, things about Dr. Gao, and she came to understand many things.
"So you’re going to divorce Gao Chuan, is that right?" Xia Zi asked her calmly about her future plans after calming down.
The girl nodded silently; for her now, divorce seemed inevitable.
It wasn’t just about the baby; there had been many issues between her and Dr. Gao, and perhaps the baby was merely the last straw.
Xia Zi had witnessed the entire process of Jiang An’s feelings developing from marriage to love towards Gao Chuan, and she knew how difficult this decision must be for her. But as a friend, all she wished for was Jiang An’s happiness.
If being with Gao Chuan wouldn’t bring happiness, then she supported Jiang An’s decision.
"What do you plan to do after the divorce?"
Jiang An shook her head, "I don’t know yet."
She had already submitted her resignation to City Hospital, and for now, she was thinking of sorting out the divorce with Gao Chuan after getting discharged, without having any clear plans for the future.
"It’s okay, we’ll think about the future slowly." Xia Zi looked at Jiang An, who appeared worried, and comforted her, slowly taking her hand.
"Jiang An, no matter what you plan on doing, I’m your best friend. If you run into any trouble, just come to me and don’t you dare keep things from me like this time, got it?" Xia Zi seldom got emotional in front of her, speaking with a firm tone this time.
Jiang An, a bit unaccustomed to this, laughed out with a "pfft."
"Got it!"
Xia Zi then smiled, satisfied.
Jiang An turned to look at the table piled with health supplements and fruit, feeling a surge of warmth in her heart.
During her time in the hospital, Ji Wanwan and Xia Zi would often visit her, and Wei Yan, out of worry, would often spend nights in the hospital; all of which she noted.
She suddenly felt that here, she wasn’t alone.
