Chapter 18: Chapter 17 Jiang An is Cute

Watching the girl’s embarrassed demeanor, Gao Chuan sighed, handed the umbrella to Jiang An, and moved the suitcase next to her to the trunk of the car. Jiang An held the umbrella over him all the way, fearful that raindrops would fall on Gao Chuan’s suit.

After two trips, Gao Chuan, seeing Jiang An still holding the umbrella for him, slightly curved his lips. The rain continued to pour heavily, his voice blending with the rainfall: "What are you standing there for? Get in the car!"

Finally having moved all the belongings, Gao Chuan led Jiang An to a bedroom door, opened it, and introduced, "This is your room; my bedroom is next door. Across here is the study you can use; it has an en-suite bathroom."

Jiang An glanced inside; the space was decorated in a gray, minimalist style, everything neat and well-organized, spotlessly clean. She stepped inside, and Gao Chuan, noticing Jiang An covered in raindrops, moved her suitcase inside and said, "Take a shower first; towel and pajamas are all ready in the closet." After saying this, he closed the door like a gentleman.

Left alone in the room, the girl first curiously looked around, then opened her suitcase to tidy up a bit. Opening the wardrobe, she indeed found a set of pink loungewear and some towels. She took off her clingy dress and entered the bathroom.

About half an hour later, Jiang An changed into the loungewear prepared by Gao Chuan and planned to continue tidying up when a knock, "Knock, knock," was heard. She went to open the door and saw Gao Chuan in dark gray loungewear, who coldly said, "Once you’re done, come out and have something to eat."

Jiang An’s gaze landed on the tall man in front of her, broad-shouldered and slim-waisted, his dark gray collar slightly open revealing half his muscular chest. His eyes briefly rested on the girl in pink, and noticing they were wearing the same style of pyjamas, almost like a couple’s set, her face flushed with color.

Following Gao Chuan to the living room, Jiang An recognized the faint mint scent on him, the same as the one he prepared in her room. Seeing the bowl of wontons still steaming on the table,

"Dr. Gao, aren’t you eating?" Jiang An noticed there was only one serving, turning to ask Gao Chuan standing behind her.

"I’ve already eaten. Oh, and I habitually work out in the evenings. If it gets noisy, let me know," his voice, magnetic yet slightly icy, floated to her.

Jiang An frantically shook her head indicating it didn’t bother her. The man watched her start eating then walked into another room. She turned to see him enter a room full of workout equipment, understanding Dr. Gao was going to exercise, and focused back on eating her wontons.

After finishing the bowl of clear broth wontons, she saw him still in the gym, dripping in sweat. She went into the kitchen to clean up, then returned to her room. Her bedroom, prepared by Gao Chuan, faced the sun with two warm-toned lamps by the bed, a delightful feature for someone like Jiang An who loved being in bed.

She took out her laptop, sat on the bed and started editing her thesis. Putting in one earphone, relaxing music played softly. She wore black round glasses and slowly tapped away at the keyboard.

Post-workout, Gao Chuan reached Jiang An’s room door and noticed it wasn’t locked. He knocked symbolically but without a response, pushed open the door. Seeing her sitting on the bed with her laptop, he walked in and placed a hot glass of milk on the bedside table. Jiang An, noticing him walking to her bed, hurriedly took off her headphones, hearing his command, "Drink the milk before bed."

The girl’s eyes fixed on the full cup of milk, suddenly feeling a sense of being meticulously cared for.

Gao Chuan saw the girl nodding like mashing garlic, glanced at her crowded computer screen, and Jiang An, noticing his gaze, quickly explained, "I’m working on a thesis."

The man nodded expressionlessly, a strong masculine scent emanating off him, probably due to the exercise, and unexpectedly, a wave of kindness hit him as he reminded, "There’s a lot of medical material in the study you can look at."

Jiang An absentmindedly nodded, her lively eyes meeting Gao Chuan’s high gaze. She noticed him still standing by the bed staring at her computer screen without leaving, "Dr. Gao, is there anything else?"

Gao Chuan was startled by the girl’s question, turned his head, and coughed lightly before finally remembering what he came to say: "Well, tomorrow, pack up and I’ll take you home with me." As he spoke, his face turned to the other side.

"Ah, going to meet your uncle and aunt?"

"Yes, to meet my family." Gao Chuan explained calmly. After meeting the old lady today, Shen Mei must already know about the two of them getting their marriage certificate. She had even called earlier to question him, so this was a good opportunity to take Jiang An back home.

"Mmm, okay, mission accepted." The girl seemed thoughtful about something, then suddenly became excited and raised her arms in a cheering posture.

Gao Chuan looked down and saw her sitting cutely on the bed. Silently, a slight curve formed at the corners of his mouth. He thought it seemed a little cruel that meeting his family was a "mission" that she had to complete.

"Go to sleep early..."

"Dr. Gao..."

Both spoke almost simultaneously, creating a subtly awkward atmosphere. Gao Chuan noticed the girl fell silent and looked puzzled: "What’s wrong?"

The tender yellow light enveloped the figure on the bed, casting faint shadows on the white wall beside her. Gao Chuan lowered his gaze to look at Jiang An’s flushed face. The girl slightly lifted her head, looking up at him with her thin lips curling into a crescent, and her eyes, both poignant and appealing, asked, "How did I do today? Did I pass?"

Her pleading eyes were like those of a child begging for a reward, her delicate and intricate features were like that of a dolled-up doll, staring right at him.

Out of Jiang An’s sight, Gao Chuan’s ears swiftly turned red. Dodging the girl’s longing gaze, his eyes landed on the wall next to him as he nonchalantly replied, "Not bad."

His ambiguous response reached Jiang An’s ears, sparking a glint in her eyes. For her, winning even a little acknowledgment from Gao Chuan was entirely satisfying.

"Let’s keep it up tomorrow!" The girl gestured a cheering motion towards Gao Chuan, as if they were teammates side by side.

Gao Chuan turned his face and simply said, "Go to sleep early," then hurriedly left Jiang An’s bedroom with disordered steps and went to his own room to lie down, but the image of the girl’s bright eyes and white teeth lingered before him.

The man turned over, closed his eyes, and forced himself to stop thinking, but his heart remained restless for a long time.

The night was dense like spilled ink, the crescent moon showing its sharp tip, emitting a faint light after the shadows dispersed.

It’s adorable, he thought.
