Chapter 158: How Gao Chuan Treats You
As Shen Mei spoke, her words reached the man’s ears, causing Gao Chuan’s eyes to suddenly become sharp, and a trace of bitterness surged at the bottom of his heart.
He had always thought that he had kept his distance over the years, never doing anything that could lead Song Xin to misunderstand that he had feelings for her. Yet somehow, since their sophomore year, rumors about the two started to circulate among their acquaintances.
Buried in his lab work, he had no time to pay attention to those rumors, dismissing them as idle gossip. However, he had not expected the situation to escalate until Shen Mei personally arranged for Song Xin to be delivered to his bed.
What else could he possibly do to announce to the world that he did not have feelings for Song Xin? Was it really necessary to bind them together for no reason, just because they went to school together?
"No, let’s turn the page on the past. Don’t bring it up again," Gao Chuan said irritably, and shortly after his voice fell, he heard Shen Mei sigh in relief next to him, "That’s good, that’s good. Anan is a nice girl; you must not do anything to wrong her."
The man on the sofa did not react, his gaze falling on the TV in the distance as his thoughts flew wildly.
Meanwhile, Jiang An and Gao Lin were having a heated standoff in the study. Initially, Jiang An had agreed to a game of chess with the old man simply out of boredom, but she hadn’t expected to play right into Gao Lin’s hands. After many rounds, she had never managed to win a single one.
Yet Gao Lin, particularly fond of challenging her, continued to play chess with her, his consistent opponent.
The game reached a stalemate; Jiang An bit her fingertips, pondering where to move next, while Gao Lin sat opposite the girl, observing her every move with a gentle gaze.
It was after a long contemplation that Jiang An finally realized it was a dead end—no matter how she played, it would be futile.
Admitting defeat, Jiang An pouted with a hint of disappointment in her eyes, "You win again."
Gao Lin then laughed heartily; sometimes, it was quite amusing to watch the young girl so frustrated, trying to figure out how to break through the game.
As usual, Gao Lin began to analyze her mistakes, showing her which move had led to the sequence of errors, while Jiang An moved the chess pieces, listening intently to him.
Chess was indeed an intricate art, and she was merely a novice at best.
"Anan, how has Gao Chuan been treating you lately?" Gao Lin asked as he looked at the girl still focused on the chessboard, sipping tea from the cup beside him.
Jiang An, distracted by the sudden question, pulled her thoughts back from the game, puzzled by Gao Lin’s abrupt query.
"Pretty... pretty well."
"That kid hasn’t bullied you, has he?" Gao Lin’s suspicion rose at Jiang An’s hesitant response, his brows furrowing instantly.
Seeing his reaction, Jiang An quickly waved her hands, clarifying, "No, no, we’re doing well."
Truthfully, aside from leaving her in tears after every kiss, Dr. Gao had always taken special care of her. He might not have said much, but she could feel his silent concern.
"Is that so? I know what he’s like. He’s never been good at showing care and always has that cold expression. You’ll have to bear with it," Gao Lin remarked with a sigh as he spoke about Dr. Gao.
For many years, the relationship between the father and son had been strained. Gao Chuan had always seemed utterly obedient to him, but Gao Lin knew better; it was all part of his strategy.
As a child, consistently top of his class and never stepping out of line, essentially to leave no grounds for reproach.
While other children were rebelling and opposing their parents, Gao Chuan was different; he studiously climbed the ranks in school.
And yet that calm exterior hid his ultimate rebellion; as if it were all preordained, Gao Chuan renounced the family business Gao Lin had prepared for him, rejected the opportunity to study abroad, and instead forged his own path in medicine.
It seemed that since high school, Gao Chuan had rarely stayed at home anymore, seldom returning during college and always visiting his grandmother first during the holidays. After college, he moved out to live on his own.
Despite the family’s wealth, the car and house he now owned were all purchased by himself without a single penny from the family. And thus, he detached himself from the Gao Family.
Later, he got married without a word, as if never considering his family’s feelings.
Gao Lin had no one to blame but himself for Gao Chuan choosing this path. In his youth, his temper flared over his career, and the home was a mess, even taking his anger out on Gao Chuan. Once the boy outgrew him, Gao Lin never cared much about him, until Gao Chuan graduated and started working, when as a father, Gao Lin wanted to get involved but found he had no say at all.
Shen Mei often said he didn’t care enough for their son, which is why Gao Chuan didn’t want to be close to him. But now, it seemed too late to say anything.
After all, they could never return to the way things were decades ago.
"In marriage, like in chess, sometimes you need to be willing to take a step back. Perhaps, after some careful thought, some conflicts may suddenly become clear," Gao Lin said slowly.
"As elders, we can’t intervene in the matters of you young people; we just want to see you happy, and that would make us content."
Jiang An nodded repeatedly, listening to the elder’s words.
As they spoke, Gao Lin’s expression turned wistful, his voice hoarse as he continued, "Gao Chuan has always been stubborn. Once he sets his mind to something, he never wavers, and he’s suffered for it. If he ever wrongs you, come tell us right away. Your mother and I will have your back."
Jiang An appreciated the good intentions of the Gao elders and was genuinely happy to have such wonderful in-laws who treated her as their own daughter. She felt a wave of gratitude.
As the two conversed, a knocking sound suddenly came from outside the door, followed by Gao Chuan pushing the door open, "Jiang An, let’s go."
Jiang An then realized how engrossed they had been in their chess game—it was already close to nine o’clock at night. She got up to leave, and as Gao Lin, still seated, suddenly addressed them, "The villa in the East Suburb is almost renovated. You two should go have a look."
Standing by the door, Gao Chuan looked at Gao Lin, sipping his tea, and refused as he had before, "No need."
Hearing his icy response, Gao Lin slammed his tea cup onto the table, perhaps with a hint of anger, "What do you mean ’no need’? It’s not for you; it’s a gift for Anan."
Caught between the disagreeing father and son, Jiang An awkwardly tried to mediate, "Dad, don’t be mad. We’ll go have a look when we have time."
