Chapter 146 Life’s Exception

The night was dark and rich, the man drove swiftly, neon lights outside the window kept changing and receding.

A red light flashed; Gao Chuan followed the car ahead in braking, the black body of his vehicle momentarily submerged in the ceaseless flow of the highway. The man’s clear eyes settled on the traffic before him, his mind absentmindedly pondering the words Song Li had said to him in the private room.

He said that his life plan did not include love.

He said that he would never fall in love.

Black eyes swirling, the man lowered the car window slightly, the chilly wind invading through the gap, finally dispersing the hint of restlessness in his heart.

What Song Li had bluntly stated was what was on his mind.

Indeed, for the first thirty years of his life, he had followed the trajectory planned out for his education and career, never deviating a single step.

As if fulfilling his family’s expectations was what he ought to do.

After turning thirty, his family began to press him for marriage. Already entangled with work, he had never considered marriage before, until last year when his grandmother fell seriously ill, and upon the changes at home, started regularly attending matchmaking sessions under Shen Mei’s urging.

Yet he never poured even a smidgen of personal emotion into each meeting, sometimes considering that he was merely scouting for a suitable marriage partner.

It was an obligation at his age, just like his previous schooling and career pursuits.

His requirements for this marriage were merely to please his grandmother. Looking at it this way, Song Li wasn’t entirely wrong—his marriage to Jiang An was initiated with that purpose in mind.

However, he never anticipated that for the first time in his life, there would be an exception.

Jiang An was that exception.

A marriage initially as routine as clockwork began to shift his initial mindset with the addition of the girl. For the first time in thirty years, he, who had always been solitary, felt the sensation of companionship. For the first time, he fostered the desire to spend the rest of his life with the person before him.

For the first time, he felt that marriage wasn’t a burden.

Therefore, Song Li was wrong.

Things were different now; he had fallen in love with someone. Jiang An had changed him, and he was trying to change for Jiang An in turn.

And he didn’t dislike this change.

The green light came on, the man silently pressed the accelerator and continued driving forward, the thoughts in his mind seemingly dissipating with the wind.

By the time he finally returned home, it was nearly eleven o’clock at night. The man adjusted his tie and went straight to his bedroom, opening the door to find the girl already fast asleep in bed, slightly curled up, hugging a pillow as though waiting for him, with two small lamps left on at the bedside.

The dim light wrapped around the soundly sleeping girl; for some reason, a sigh of relief escaped the man upon the sight of her.

Thankfully, her arrival was not a dream.

The man shed his fatigue, changed into pajamas, and lay down beside the girl. As usual, he pulled the girl into his embrace from behind, bringing with him the scent that lingered from moving through places of revelry.

It seemed that feeling the sudden presence behind her, Jiang An was roused by him and opened her eyes, realizing the man was holding her, still groggy, she mumbled, "You’re back?"

Upon hearing her, the man did not let go, simply replying with a "Hmm," and quietly buried his head into the nape of the girl’s neck in the darkness.

After that, not another word was said, and Jiang An seemed too tired, falling back asleep in the man’s embrace.

Even when Gao Chuan couldn’t help but kiss her later, she didn’t feel it; the man propped himself up with a hand in the darkness, gazing tenderly at the dreaming Jiang An, his eyes visibly softened.

—————

The next day, as the first light of dawn broke, Jiang An awoke to find Gao Chuan still lying beside her. It was rare to see Dr. Gao wake up later than herself on regular days. The girl tried to clear the drowsiness from her mind and quietly wriggled out of the man’s embrace to run into the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

Since there was more time available today, she decided to cook a pot of porridge, preferring Chinese-style breakfast over bread and milk.

While she was still busy in the kitchen, a figure suddenly leaned in from behind. Gao Chuan had woken up at some point and, after freshening up, came over to wrap his arms around her from behind.

"Are you awake?" Jiang An noticed the person who leaned in behind her and asked softly.

"Mm."

The man held the girl, still wearing an apron, from behind. The rare bright sunlight outside the window allowed him to lower his head slightly and smell her light fragrance, instantly lightening his mood.

It was probably known within their social circle what had happened at Song Xin’s birthday party yesterday. He was wholeheartedly hoping that this incident would make Song Xin completely let go of her affection for him and stop playing futile schemes.

Especially in the hospital.

"Let’s eat," Jiang An noticed the man was merely holding her from behind, lost in thought without moving, and reminded him in a soft voice as she turned off the microwave.

Before she could slip away, he pulled her back into his firm embrace, and as she looked up while still wearing her apron, Gao Chuan had already kissed her soft lips.

Quite sudden, early in the morning.

But Jiang An seemed to be getting used to it. After a moment of surprise, she began to slowly respond, and after so many days of practice, she felt she had improved a lot.

Gao Chuan slowly forced her back against the table behind her, bending over to wrap his arms around her waist.

Jiang An might not have realized it, but the girl, who used to gasp for breath during their kisses, was now thoroughly enjoying the man’s embrace, as if captivated by a spell.

As if to test her newfound skills, she gradually shifted from passive reciprocation to taking the initiative, silently enclosing the man’s lips and kissing him like he usually did.

Gao Chuan, realizing the woman’s actions in his embrace, was momentarily stunned, and while he was caught off-guard, Jiang An completely took control, moving aggressively onto his lips.

Gao Chuan responded with a muffled chuckle, bending down to grasp Jiang An’s restless hands, and the two seemed to deliberately engage in a battle of kisses.

When it finally ended, Jiang An still ended up at a disadvantage, panting on the man’s chest, seemingly defiant as she looked up with mischievous eyes.

The man who won the round seemed to be in high spirits, gently stroking the back of the girl’s head, listening to her heavy breathing, with a faint smile at the corner of his lips.

"Not bad, you’ve improved," he commented softly.

Jiang An, hearing the man’s praise unflinchingly, blushed and burned with embarrassment.

She suddenly recalled what Dr. Gao had once told her—he said, "Jiang An, I don’t have any experience in dating either, so let’s explore and make progress together."

So this was the so-called making progress together?
