Chapter 141: Chapter 140 She Can Never Hold On
Chapter 140 She Can Never Hold Onto Him
After being so thoroughly rejected by Jiang An, Ren Lin sat alone in the café for a while, gazing out the window and lost in thought.
He seemed to have anticipated such an outcome, but he still hadn’t expected Jiang An to refuse so decisively.
He had thought that a young girl, fresh from graduation like Jiang An, would be very eager for love. Although she had no feelings for him now, he thought he could at least express his feelings before pursuing her steadily.
Now his impulsiveness seemed to have backed him into a corner.
However, he wasn’t the type to pester relentlessly. After all, they would have to work together in the same department, so things couldn’t become too awkward.
Thus, his declaration of love ended without any drama. The man in the white coat sat in the corner, his eyes catching sight of a young couple passing by on an electric scooter, basking in the bright sunshine and smiling sweetly at each other.
Love seemed to be just like that—simple yet moving.
He didn’t leave the café until it was time to go back to work in the afternoon. He took fifteen minutes to process his emotions, then returned to his usual calm as if nothing had happened.
Entering the office without betraying the slightest change in his expression, he immediately saw Gao Chuan sitting in his chair, staring at his palm with a slight smile on his lips.
He... was smiling.
For a moment, Ren Lin wondered if he had entered the wrong office. Gao Chuan had been cold-faced all morning, making Ren Lin think that Gao Chuan was unhappy about being a mentor and therefore remained aloof towards him.
Hearing the noise, Gao Chuan looked up and met Ren Lin’s gaze, quickly straightening his face and focusing on the medical files in front of him.
"Dr. Gao, is there anything I can help with this afternoon?" Having been disappointed in love, Ren Lin decided to work even harder. He walked up to Gao Chuan and asked earnestly.
Gao Chuan looked up at Ren Lin, his eyes indecipherable for a moment.
He recalled the photo that Dr. Bai had sent at noon. Although he had bumped into them eating together a few times before, he hadn’t expected anything to happen, yet this young man had silently made his feelings known to Jiang An.
However, Gao Chuan was always professional and wouldn’t immaturely take out this affair on Ren Lin, especially since Ren Lin was his first intern, and Gao Chuan, who liked to do things perfectly, was certainly dedicated to teaching him wholeheartedly.
"This afternoon, there’s a surgery. Come and observe," the man commanded, writing in the medical files with a carbon pen, his slender fingers defined at the knuckles.
"Okay, I will prepare well," Ren Lin said joyfully and returned to his desk to focus on his preparations.
Things weren’t going so smoothly for Jiang An. She had always been mentored by Dr. Li, who let her observe and learn during consultations, but Song Xin hadn’t given her much to do, so Jiang An was tasked with copying medical records all afternoon, being told to start from the basics.
Jiang An had no choice but to comply, and her afternoon slipped away in this manner.
Near evening, Gao Chuan, followed by Ren Lin, emerged from the operating room. After a brief exchange with Ren Lin, he went back to the office to gather his things before heading downstairs, worried that Jiang An might have been waiting too long. He shot her a text message.
Her quick reply came.
Jiang An: Sure, I’ll wait for you at the usual place.
The man’s brows softened, and he quickened his pace. Upon reaching the underground car park, having just taken out his car keys to unlock his vehicle, he heard the horn of a black BMW parked next to him. Turning at the sound, he saw Song Xin poking her head out from the car window and, without a word, driving off from her spot to slowly stop beside him.
The woman sat in her car, her gaze falling on him, her eyebrows arching slightly: "This car of yours... quite low-key."
In fact, she had always felt that although both of them grew up in the same circle, Gao Chuan had always been an outsider. His friends, mostly from affluent families, either went abroad for further studies backed by their substantial family wealth or were preparing to take over the family business in a confused stupor, while Gao Chuan, having come from a public junior and senior high school, entered the elite Medical College with his outstanding grades.
Even in his daily life, while many playboys were gallivanting around, Gao Chuan had not even been in a single relationship.
It seemed that from a young age, this man was uninterestingly fulfilling his life’s plan, relying solely on himself rather than his family.
Perhaps... that’s why she still liked him to this day.
He differed from those friends, something she had noticed since she was very young, or she wouldn’t have defied her family’s objections to pursue the difficult field of medicine following him.
So, she could stand by his side, dazzling and radiant, no?
Gao Chuan knew what she was implying, "Yes?" the man asked with a dry throat.
Looking at the man in a suit and shoes, Song Xin remembered he always liked to wear suits at any time. She smiled and asked: "I heard grandma is sick?"
She spent most of her time abroad and didn’t contact home much, only to return and find out that Grandma Gao was seriously ill. Given the close relationship between the two families and how much Grandma Gao had cared for her when she was little, Song Xin couldn’t help but worry upon hearing of the old lady’s illness.
The man responded with a simple "Mm."
Song Xin looked worried, muttering to herself, "I’ve been too busy lately. I’ll find time to visit Grandma someday."
Gao Chuan stood still, not committing either way. Right now, the most important thing for Grandma Gao was to stay in good spirits. He planned to focus on his work and spend time accompanying the old lady during this period.
Their time together was running short.
"Do you want to have dinner together?" Song Xin, holding the steering wheel, noticed Gao Chuan’s dim expression when his grandmother was mentioned and suggested.
Grandma Gao had watched Gao Chuan grow up, so he must be feeling terrible right now.
"No, I have other plans." Gao Chuan bluntly declined, heading for his car, but then heard Song Xin call out from behind, "Then you should come with me when I visit grandma’s house."
Already seated in the driver’s seat, the man didn’t respond, simply inserting the keys and starting the car, driving past Song Xin without any further exchange and leaving the underground car park.
Song Xin watched the retreating figure of Gao Chuan, still seated at the steering wheel, deeply absorbed in thought. She had been away for too long and had no idea of the changes that had occurred in the Gao family these few years.
It seemed that six years of separation had made this man even more enigmatic to her.
But Gao Chuan had always been this unpredictable to her, like loose sand that she could never grasp hold of.
