Chapter 124: Longing for Her to Stay

As the Chinese New Year’s Eve was approaching, the plans to take Jiang An home with him on the first day of the New Year had to be shelved due to the accident. To keep his family from worrying, Gao Chuan had no choice but to lie that he was on a business trip out of town, when in fact he was lying alone in a hospital room, with Jiang An bustling about to bring him meals.

On New Year’s Eve, the whole city was immersed in the festive atmosphere of the celebrations, with pedestrians on the streets rushing home for the family reunion dinner. The Spring Festival Gala was already on, as scheduled, on the hospital’s television, and the relatives of a few patients in the department had brought dumplings to the nurses’ station, leaving Jiang An who was still on duty with a whole box of them.

"Dr. Jiang, we really appreciate your hard work, especially since you can’t go home for the holiday."

Unable to decline, Jiang An gratefully accepted and politely responded with a "that’s alright."

Speaking of not being able to go home for the New Year made Jiang An suddenly think of Gao Chuan, still lying in the hospital room. His examination report had come out yesterday, showing no internal injuries, but the doctors still recommended he stay in the hospital for a few more days.

She had then made rounds in a few other wards. Perhaps due to the New Year mood, everyone, up and down the department, was all smiles, and the patients greeted Jiang An with "Happy New Year" as well.

Seeing that there was nothing urgent in the department, Jiang An, carrying the dumplings, went to the nurses’ station and asked the young nurse, who was eating dumplings and watching the Spring Festival Gala, to keep an eye on things for her, then she headed downstairs to the inpatient department.

When Jiang An entered carrying the food container, Gao Chuan was working on his laptop, the otherwise quiet hospital room filled with the soft sounds of his typing. Dressed in his hospital gown, the man’s quiet demeanor as he pressed the keys, framed beneath a pair of wire-rimmed glasses, added charm to his striking facial features, making for a particularly pleasing sight.

Seeing Jiang An enter, the man shifted his gaze from the laptop screen to the girl, and simply said, "You’re here."

Jiang An nodded, speaking as she opened the food container in front of him: "A patient’s family brought some dumplings, you should try some."

Unlike the bustling outside, the hospital room was unusually quiet.

Upon seeing this, Gao Chuan closed his laptop, set it aside, and took the dumplings Jiang An handed him, finding them surprisingly tasty.

Over the years, the concept of celebrating the New Year had faded from his mind; although Shen Mei at home would try to organize, he rarely had the chance to return due to work commitments, and being able to join the reunion dinner was considered fortunate. Gao Lin had always been unsatisfied with his work commitment for this reason.

This year was more or less the same. The lab in Switzerland had encountered some issues, and he had been flying back and forth to deal with them, not expecting to suddenly get injured.

For him, it was both a happy and sad occurrence. Spending New Year’s Eve in a hospital room was a first for him.

Fortunately, he wasn’t alone, he thought, looking up at Jiang An who had already sat down beside his bed and was peeling an apple for him.

"What about mom? We can’t keep hiding this from her," Jiang An said while peeling the apple, a hint of worry in her eyes.

Shen Mei, already furious about Gao Chuan going on a business trip during the New Year, would have a fit if she found out about his injury by accident.

After finishing the dumplings in his mouth, Gao Chuan replied, "No worries, I’ll be discharged on the third day of the New Year and then I’ll go over."

Hearing that he would be discharged so soon, Jiang An couldn’t help worrying and blurted out, "Are you sure about being discharged that soon? Maybe you should stay a few more days."

"No worries, I’m confident." The man spoke with an airy ease, his words brimming with self-assuredness.

Jiang An knew she could never out-talk Dr. Gao and simply gave up. In just two minutes, she had finished peeling the apple in her hand. Seeing that the dumplings on Gao Chuan’s plate had already been half eaten, his appetite had rarely been this good these past few days. She curved her lips, placed the apple on the plate on the table, and instructed him to remember to eat it later. She then stood up from her chair, "I’m heading back now."

Just as she stepped forward, her hand was quietly seized by the person behind her. Jiang An turned around in a daze.

It seemed that fireworks were being set off outside; the "bang bang bang" noises pierced through the window and shattered the silence of the room. As the girl turned her head, her eyes reflected a colorful spectacle.

Gao Chuan was still holding a fork in one hand, and with the other, he held one of her hands. It appeared he hadn’t expected to make such a move himself. After a flash of astonishment crossed his eyes, he cleared his throat and said, "Stay a bit longer."

With a commanding tone, Jiang An looked at Gao Chuan who spoke from the hospital bed, her lips suddenly curving in a smile. It was rare to see Gao Chuan actively asking something from someone, still somewhat imperious.

Was he hoping she would stay and keep him company?

It came off as childlike, Jiang An thought and soon broke into a radiant smile. Her delicate face bloomed like a flower in early spring. She turned back and in a tone used to coax children, she said to Gao Chuan, "I probably can’t, I have a shift, maybe tomorrow..."

Before she could finish speaking, her arm was gently tugged by the man and she was swiftly pulled towards him. He had quickly set his meal tray to the side. In the next second, Jiang An stumbled unexpectedly into his embrace.

Jiang An was startled by his sudden movement, and her body was awkwardly enveloped by the arms of the man on the hospital bed. But considering his injuries, she restrained herself from moving.

Yet this compliance didn’t earn her any respite; his warm hands gently landed on her waist and suddenly pinched hard, sending a tingling sensation through Jiang An’s body.

"Just for a moment." Gao Chuan hugged her from behind, resting his heavy head on her shoulder, inhaling Jiang An’s faint fragrance mingled with the scent of disinfectant.

Jiang An typically wore her hair in a low ponytail while working. Gao Chuan stared at the nape of her neck, exposed behind her, his peach-blossom eyes slightly squinting.

He had never told Jiang An, but she looked very beautiful in her white coat.

Jiang An could feel the man’s hot breath on her skin, and sensing the particularly intimate pose between them, she blushed and whispered timidly, "Dr. Gao, let me go. I really have to leave."

There weren’t any urgent matters in the department that required her attention, but if she continued to be provoked by the man in this manner, she feared she might completely succumb right here.

Fortunately, Dr. Gao was true to his word; saying it would just be for a while, he merely held her. The two didn’t speak much until he eventually, reluctantly, let her go. Jiang An, feeling shy, straightened up and said, "I’ll come to see you after my shift," before scurrying out.

The room was suddenly left with only Gao Chuan. The man watched her flustered departure and a slight smile crept onto his lips.

His gaze fell onto the smoke-filled sky outside the window, where clusters of flames rose and vanished in an instant, reflecting a myriad of colors in his clear, watery pupils.

When had he started longing for Jiang An to stay by his side?

It felt like a very, very long time ago.
