Chapter 118: Do You Like Me?

Due to work at the hospital, Jiang An was discharged on the third day of her stay.

The first thing she did after leaving the hospital was to transfer the expenses for the past two days to Wei Yan. It wasn’t that she deliberately wanted to draw a clear line with Brother Wei Yan, but she just didn’t want to owe him the favor.

But when it came to Wei Yan, she already owed him too much, Jiang An thought.

Knowing that she had a quarrel with Gao Chuan, Wei Yan asked her if she wanted to stay with him for a while when she got into the car. His intention was clear, but Jiang An still turned him down without hesitation.

Telling Wei Yan that her marriage with Gao Chuan was a sham was just a passive move out of helplessness at the time. If it weren’t for this illness, she definitely wouldn’t have admitted this to Wei Yan.

After all, even without the marital relationship with Dr. Gao, she and Wei Yan could only be friends.

Seeing the girl’s decisive refusal, Wei Yan was not surprised. He was just about to start the car to take Jiang An home when his Bluetooth earpiece rang with the sound of an incoming call.

Since it connected to the car stereo, he pressed the answer button, and the voice of the caller, his assistant, was broadcasted, saying that there was a problem with some business at the company and he needed to come back to check it out immediately.

Wei Yan frowned upon hearing this, yet he still didn’t loosen his grip on the steering wheel and instructed direcly, "You take someone to stall that person in charge first, I’ll be there shortly."

The man didn’t plan to leave Jiang An there, but sitting in the driver’s seat, Jiang An heard the conversation and took the initiative to say, "Brother Wei Yan, you go ahead with your work, I can go back by myself."

After hanging up the call, Wei Yan heard the girl’s pleading voice from the passenger seat and his expression relaxed a bit, "It’s okay, it’s not urgent, I’ll take you home first."

Having just recovered from a serious illness, in this cold weather, he naturally couldn’t leave the girl alone.

But Jiang An insisted on not troubling him anymore, afraid to delay Wei Yan’s work at the company, and proactively opened the door and got out of the car. Wei Yan could only help the girl hail another taxi and, fearing she would catch cold again, he gave his own scarf to her before she got in.

"Wrap this around you when you get out, it’s cold today, and I don’t want to have to stay in the hospital with you for another two days," the man said, pretending to be flippant.

Jiang An could only accept it while feeling grateful for Wei Yan who had been taking meticulous care of her during her two days of illness and said, "Thank you."

Wei Yan’s lips curled into a smile. This was already the umpteenth ’thank you’ he had received from the girl over these days. He stretched out his hand and gently rubbed the top of the girl’s head, moving so lightly that he left no trace, and said with a smile, "Silly girl, no need to be so formal with me."

He watched the taxi drive away until it was out of sight before he got back into his car and headed towards his company.

Jiang An directed the driver to go straight to the cemetery. Due to the cemetery being in the suburbs, it took more than an hour to arrive.

It was the twelfth lunar month and the weather was cold, with the wind gradually picking up strength. As the car drove on the streets, Jiang An boredly watched the retreating scenery outside the window, where the branches were already hung with frost and passersby were all bundled up in their thick winter clothes.

Jiang An wrapped the dark grey scarf given to her by Wei Yan around her neck, and with the bulky cotton coat she wore, she looked like a round little bear.

Jiang An stayed in front of Fang Qing’s grave for a long time, repeatedly apologizing to him. She really shouldn’t have forgotten her father’s death anniversary.

She had also spoken to Fang Qing about her relationship with Dr. Gao.

It seemed that she had always been insatiably greedy, desperately trying to gain acceptance from the Gao Family, and despite knowing her marriage to Dr. Gao was a sham, she yearned for the love of a man.

But perhaps these were not things she should have been thinking about at all.

She often wondered, if she hadn’t married Dr. Gao back then, what would she be doing now?

Maybe she would have followed Professor Chen’s advice, and gone abroad to work while studying.

Maybe she still wouldn’t have been in a relationship.

Maybe life would be tough but happy.

Unnoticed, it was already past six. Perhaps it was the time she spent outside that caused it, her nose had turned red; the Didi she had ordered on the app took an entire half-hour to arrive.

By the time she got home, it was already past seven in the evening. Gao Chuan had come back from work, and upon hearing noises, realized Jiang An had returned. The man walked into the living room just as the girl was coming in.

Knowing she was sick and had been lying in the hospital not wishing to see him, Gao Chuan hadn’t bothered her. Yet, Jiang An took it as Gao Chuan’s indifference toward her.

The girl had her own hidden troubles, and on top of that, her illness had not completely healed. She coughed continuously as she entered the house, and Gao Chuan’s gaze turned somewhat colder at the sight of her still pale face.

For some reason, the words of Wei Yan from the day before came flooding back into his mind. Gao Chuan watched as the girl politely greeted him with "Dr. Gao", her expression cold as ice, not even lifting her head to look at him, and his face instantly darkened.

So she had no intention of explaining to him what had happened in these past days, not even willing to tell him about her illness?

Jiang An greeted the man and walked into her bedroom, not understanding why, though she had imagined many scenarios of meeting Gao Chuan over the past few days, when she really faced Dr. Gao again, her heart still couldn’t help but ache.

The girl took a bath first, then remembered the medicine she had taken from the hospital had not yet been taken. She picked up her water cup intending to go to the kitchen to pour some hot water when Gao Chuan, who was walking by the living room, grabbed her arm, forcing her to stop. The man’s hoarse voice came from above her head: "Jiang An, don’t you have anything to say to me?"

He wanted to hear her explanation, to clarify everything that had happened in the past few days, including why Brother Wei Yan was by her side.

Jiang An looked up steadfastly at the man with a hint of anger in his eyes, her gaze slightly startled, the defenses inside her heart instantly collapsed, and the grip on her quilt tightened abruptly.

What was she supposed to say? That she received an apology from her husband after their first night? That she spent the whole day in a fever lying alone in the old house? Or that she was an unfilial daughter who could even forget her father’s death anniversary?

She thought she could just laugh it off, but standing in front of this man, she realized her so-called strength and pretenses were incredibly frail.

Gao Chuan looked down at Jiang An, who was staring at him, and in a matter of seconds, he saw the girl’s eyes suddenly redden, shining with glimmers.

"Do you like me, Dr. Gao?" The girl looked up at the slightly softened expression of the man in front of her and asked calmly.

Despite the questioning tone, her expression was filled with defiance, like a child who was unwilling to admit defeat after losing a battle.
