Chapter 113 - 112: Why Have You Just Arrived?

Ever since Ren Lin made that offensive move last time, Jiang An had intentionally or unintentionally been avoiding any contact with him. Ren Lin seemed to have felt the girl’s deliberate distancing and didn’t know how to respond.

Seeing Jiang An go to the break room to get water, Ren Lin took the opportunity to follow her. Jiang An put her cup on the water dispenser, looked up, and saw Ren Lin standing beside her with an embarrassed smile. She lowered her head, wanting to continue filling her cup with water.

Just then, Gao Chuan, who had just finished a surgery, wanted to come in for a drink of water. He stopped abruptly at the doorway when he saw the two standing side by side by the water dispenser, his expression cooling a few degrees as he overheard the conversation coming from inside.

Ren Lin appeared to be inviting Jiang An to his birthday party that evening. His voice echoed in the ears of Dr. Gao at the door, causing the man to furrow his brows and silently turn away from the break room.

"There are only a few friends invited; Song Ya and the others have also agreed. I hope you can come too," Ren Lin said, standing in front of Jiang An, adding hastily as if afraid she would refuse, his voice betraying embarrassment as he scratched his head.

Jiang An picked up her now full cup, hearing the sincerity in Ren Lin’s words, but still made an excuse to decline.

She wasn’t fond of such awkward circumstances to begin with, and she wasn’t that familiar with Ren Lin either.

Ren Lin caught the refusal in Jiang An’s words and a flicker of disappointment flashed in his eyes, though his face still carried a smile, "It’s okay, no worries."

"Happy birthday," Jiang An smiled and wished him well. Ren Lin could only not persist any further, thanking her, as she had already moved to leave the break room.

Ren Lin had noticed the change in Jiang An’s attitude these past few days; she was off these past two days and he hadn’t found an opportunity to apologize. He had hoped to clear things up at the birthday party, which now seemed to be in vain.

Ren Lin watched the girl’s departing figure with a trace of melancholy.

Jiang An was still in low spirits from last night’s events. Coincidentally, Xia Zi was also off work today, so they had arranged to have dinner together. As they were about to leave work, Jiang An sent a message to Gao Chuan via WeChat saying she wouldn’t be coming home that evening because she had plans with a friend.

The two booked a hotpot restaurant. Since Xia Zi worked far from there, by the time they met up it was almost eight o’clock, and the sky was completely dark.

"I can’t be blamed for this, who’d have thought the big shot would have such stamina," Xia Zi replied, defending herself after ordering and hearing Jiang An’s complaint.

"But are you sure there’s no problem in that regard? Maybe he’s over thirty and unmarried because there’s disharmony!" Xia Zi curiously asked, her mouth agape in wonder.

Jiang An shook her head shyly, not willing to recall last night’s embarrassing incident, only to hear Xia Zi continue to tease, "Dr. Gao could be gay, right!"

"No wait, he kissed you before. Let me think..." Xia Zi propped her chin, pondering, as Jiang An had already taken the apron passed over by the restaurant waiter and tied it around herself.

After thinking for a bit, Xia Zi spoke, "The big shot might be planning to divorce you later, that’s why he doesn’t want to touch you!"

After saying this, Xia Zi realized her blunder when she saw Jiang An frowning, and quickly retracted her statement, "No, no, that can’t be it. The big shot is already with you!"

Jiang An’s eyes dimmed, and she picked up her chopsticks, stirring up the contents of the hot pot, her delicate, flawless face enshrouded in the rising steam. Noticing Jiang An’s slightly downcast expression, Xia Zi fell silent, cursing her own tactlessness.

Xia Zi quickly changed the topic, sharing some stories from the hospital with Jiang An. Midway through their meal, Jiang An’s phone in her coat pocket suddenly rang. She set down her chopsticks to check it and saw a call from Song Li, looking puzzled.

As soon as the call connected, she heard the man’s anxious voice on the other line, amidst what seemed like a noisy background, "Sister-in-law, my brother’s drunk and insists on finding you."

Jiang An stood up from her seat as soon as she heard, pressed by Song Li’s stammering, he couldn’t provide a clear explanation, so she directly asked him to send her the address.

Xia Zi, seeing her flustered, asked what had happened.

"Dr. Gao got drunk, I need to pick him up," Jiang An said, grabbing her coat while still in a hurry. Xia Zi, who was munching on tripes, promptly passed her bag to Jiang An, "Go ahead, you should hurry."

Jiang An took a taxi to the address Song Li mentioned. When she found the room and went in, she saw a roomful of people, several unfamiliar men sitting on the couch, two of whom were even embracing women. Jiang An scanned the room to finally spot Gao Chuan sitting in a corner, the man reclining against the back of the sofa with a drunken countenance.

Seeing Jiang An at the door, Song Li hurried over to greet her, looking as though he’d seen a savior, "Little sister-in-law, you’ve come at last. You have no idea, my brother got drunk and said he won’t leave without seeing you."

Everyone’s eyes turned to Jiang An standing at the door. Under the scrutinizing gaze of the crowd, the girl felt uneasy as Song Li pulled her towards Dr. Gao on the sofa. A stranger approached her directly, eyeing Jiang An curiously, "Ah, so this is the sister-in-law, we finally get to meet today."

Jiang An turned, smiling innocently, nodded in acknowledgment, as the man introduced himself, revealing his name as a good buddy of Gao Chuan.

Although they had been married for several months now, Gao Chuan had never taken her to meet his friends, except for the uninvited Song Li.

Jiang An looked around the room, figuring they were probably all from wealthy families. Before she could speak, two more people approached, introducing themselves and calling her "sister-in-law."

Jiang An managed an awkward greeting and then made her way to Gao Chuan sitting on the couch. The man’s cheeks were flushed from too much drink. Spotting Jiang An, his half-closed eyes reached for her hand and pressed it against his face like a petulant child, muttering, "Why did you just arrive? I’ve been waiting for you for a long time."

Seeing his sudden action, Jiang An blushed, as the onlookers gazed at the couple in astonishment.

What a spectacle; those who had known Gao Chuan for so long had never seen him behave so clingily before.

In front of everyone’s astonished gaze, Jiang An withdrew her hand, leaned over gently, and whispered to him softly, "You’re drunk, let’s go home."

Finally, amidst everyone’s astonished gazes, Song Li helped Jiang An take Dr. Gao out, the man still repeatedly muttering Jiang An’s name.

They had only heard rumors that Gao Chuan was married, yet it seemed the man had completely changed after the marriage.
