Chapter 105: Jiang An’s Breakdown
On Thursday, Jiang An stayed on duty at the hospital.
The girl in a white coat made her rounds in the general ward. One of her patients had been in poor condition since morning, and several attending physicians had already consulted on the case during the day, tentatively scheduling surgery for the following afternoon.
The location of the tumor in the elderly patient’s brain was particularly tricky, keeping a team of doctors extremely busy. Jiang An watched in the ward as the old lady, a mere shadow of her former self, was wracked with pain. Already frail with age, she now had to endure this illness, her face ashen as she lay in bed.
Jiang An heard a couple of young nurses discussing the old woman’s condition in the rest area. It made her think of the heated argument she had overheard in the office earlier, where Dr. Li and the others were red in the face, disputing over the surgery.
No choice—due to the tumor’s peculiar location, a hasty operation could likely cause severe consequences by stimulating the patient’s brain.
Faced with such a difficult case, it was natural for anyone to feel disheartened. As an assistant physician, all Jiang An could do was help Dr. Li to successfully perform the surgery.
The night outside had deepened, and a sudden snowfall had descended upon the world. The temperature plummeted during the night. After finishing her tasks, Jiang An returned to her office. Snowflakes clung to the window, forming crisp frost patterns. Warming her hands with a cup of hot water, her eyes gazed out the window.
Winters in Jing City were much colder than in the South. She still remembered her childhood in a city where spring seemed everlasting, where she had lived with her mother and where snow was never seen – until her father passed away, and she witnessed her first northern snowfall when her mother brought her to Jing City.
Just as she was about to doze off at her desk, a nurse burst in, shattering the silence, "Dr. Jiang, the patient is crashing!"
Jiang An was dozing moments before, but at the call, she immediately stood up from her chair and rushed to the resuscitation room alongside the nurse, instructing the younger nurse to notify Dr. Bai, who was on duty that night.
"The patient is currently comatose, with no pulse in the carotid and femoral arteries, and the heart has stopped abruptly."
Upon arrival, Jiang An immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the patient. Despite numerous attempts, the elderly patient’s vital signs did not return. She then began injecting epinephrine and ordered, "Prepare for intubation and use mechanical ventilation," instructing the nurse beside her.
Outside, the snowfall seemed to grow heavier.
Dr. Bai, having finished a surgery, raced to the scene. Upon entering the resuscitation room, he saw Jiang An persistently performing CPR on the person in the bed, while the head nurse, with tears in her eyes, was holding onto the agitated young woman, "Dr. Jiang, it’s no use, the patient has lost all vital signs."
The sound of the flatline from the heart monitor in the operating room was piercingly obnoxious.
He quickly moved forward. Noticing Dr. Bai, Jiang An stopped her actions and suddenly looked up, a tear sparkling on her cheek. To her, seeing him was like catching sight of a deity, "Dr. Bai, you’re here, please save her, you must save her."
Dr. Bai swiftly assessed the patient’s data and, after everything was concluded, turned with a helpless expression to the others, "Notify the family to prepare for the funeral."
Jiang An, standing aside, had her eyes wide with large tears rolling down her cheeks. The young woman was frozen in place, disbelief written all over her.
Until the very end, she watched helplessly as the patient was wheeled out of the operating room. Dr. Bai turned to see the devastated Jiang An behind him and patted her shoulder, consoling, "Jiang, everyone has their destiny, you did very well today."
The hospital sank into a prolonged silence late into the night. By the time Jiang An walked back to her office, her legs were weak, and everything she had just experienced felt like an ephemeral bubble. Shutting the door behind her, the girl suddenly collapsed to the floor.
She had lived through the deaths of her parents, yet she had never imagined that one day she would witness a patient slowly losing breath before her very eyes.
At the moment when the elderly completely lost his vital signs, she felt for the first time how agonizing a sense of helplessness could be.
She remembered what Professor Chen had told her during her studies: "Do what you can, don’t worry about the results."
But when a living being perished right before her eyes, Jiang An couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with sorrow.
Being a doctor means getting used to the presence of life and death; this was only the first time. Jiang An stared blankly at the floor, shivering all over, covering her face with her hands, her shoulders beginning to heave as she sobbed.
Tears trickled down one by one from the corners of her eyes, and the girl’s whimpers were continuous and unending.
The next day, when Gao Chuan drove to the hospital, he had already heard about last night’s incident. Thinking about how his colleagues discussed arranging surgery for the elderly just yesterday made him feel helplessly sentimental.
Upon entering the office, he bumped into Dr. Bai, who was preparing to hand over his shift, looking unusually drained. Even when he greeted him, it was half-hearted.
"Last night must have been tough," said Gao Chuan, struggling to speak, and in the end, he could only muster this simple phrase.
Dr. Bai pursed his lips and sighed before saying to him, "By the time I got there last night, the patient was already gone. It was tough on Jiang, though. I heard the poor girl broke down and cried for a while last night. I would have fallen apart mentally if it were me."
After all, Jiang is a new intern, still full of passion, and it hasn’t been long before encountering such an experience. Anyone would be affected.
When Gao Chuan heard him mention Jiang An, his heart instantly clenched. He had only been thinking about the elderly patient and had forgotten that Jiang An was on duty at the hospital last night.
"I’m going to go get some rest now. The patient in bed 4 just had surgery last night, keep an eye on them," Dr. Bai told Gao Chuan. Seeing his distracted look, Dr. Bai waved his hand in front of him to catch his attention, "What’s on your mind?"
Gao Chuan came back to his senses, nodded, and walked into the office.
A sense of fear inexplicably rose in his heart, as the image of Fang Qing’s death that night flashed in his mind—the girl hugging herself in the corridor, sobbing uncontrollably. He wondered if last night was also such a scene.
He knew that Jiang An was the type who appeared strong on the surface but was even more fragile on the inside. Confronting something like last night’s event, even the most experienced doctors would be distressed for a while, let alone the fledgling Jiang An.
Gao Chuan found himself inexplicably walking towards Jiang An’s office, and as he reached the door, he heard noises coming from inside and stopped in his tracks.
"Jiang An, this isn’t your fault, go home and rest. You have such dark circles; you almost look like a panda," Ren Lin’s voice came from the office, seeming to comfort Jiang An.
"Is Dr. Li here yet?" the girl asked, her voice already hoarse.
"He’s here, seems like he was called over by the department head," Ren Lin answered.
"Alright, hurry up and go, don’t wear yourself out," Ren Lin said, looking at the haggard-faced Jiang An with a tone full of sympathy.
"Mhmm, when Dr. Li arrives, please hand this report over to him."
The man standing outside the office turned gloomy, then silently turned and walked away.
