Chapter 103 Sleep Soundly
In the dark and silent room, a man’s hand is propped beside Jiang An, his sharp gaze from within the black pupils focused on Jiang An’s body, the heat below surging to his head.
He thought the self-control he had honed over thirty years was enough to keep his desires in check, but the oblivious young woman beneath him was repeatedly testing his limits.
Lying beneath him, Jiang An could sense the intense heat in the man’s eyes and couldn’t help but stiffen her body, her eyes shimmering in the darkness with ripples of light, her black hair spread out on the pillow. The flipped collar of her white lace nightgown wrapped her delicate figure, the straps sliding slightly down her shoulders to reveal a hint of spring.
She slightly lifted her head and felt the hot breath from the man above.
Her body jerked suddenly, her heart pounding as she bit her lip before the man in front of her, unknowingly tightening her grip on the bedsheets.
Jiang An has always been a conservative girl, but in front of Dr. Gao, she wasn’t opposed to matters of the bed, it’s just that she couldn’t help feeling scared without any experience.
She had not expected that her words would be like a bomb that had already exploded in the man’s chest. At this moment, Gao Chuan was like a highly predatory wolf, his burning gaze enveloping the anxious girl beneath him, his peach blossom eyes ablaze, leaving him nearly senseless.
"Do you know what you were saying just now?" The man’s voice was hoarse with dryness as he questioned.
When Jiang An slightly raised her eyes, she saw the man’s firm and clear jawline.
Their scents mingled in each breath, and Jiang An squinted her eyes, trembling all over due to excessive tension, watching the man lean down slowly and close her eyes uneasily.
Shadows flickered in the dim room, the man’s fingers tracing the contour of the girl’s face, his Adam’s apple moving slowly, silently swallowing.
A voice in his heart echoed silently, telling himself that she was his girl.
The proximity of heartbeats, almost overlapping, the touch on his hand firmly declared that his girl was within reach.
Gao Chuan watched the tensed expression on Jiang An below him, his lips curving into a smirk. He slowly leaned over to plant a soft kiss on the girl’s forehead, as light as a dragonfly skimming water, silent and unnoticed.
A cool breeze brushed her cheek, a heat blooming on her forehead, Jiang An slightly opened her eyes to find that the man had already laid back down beside her. Recalling the bashful way she thought Dr. Gao was about to do something, a hot rush of blood made her shyly want to ascend to heaven then and there.
Suddenly falling into silence, Gao Chuan slightly turned his head to see only the girl’s back, a deep sense of helplessness clouding his heart.
Jiang An curled up, not even closing her eyes before she was pulled back into the embrace of the man behind her, his long arm wrapping around her side.
Startled for a moment, Jiang An slightly moved her body only to feel Gao Chuan’s hold tightening, his magnetic voice then whispering in her ear: "Sleep soundly."
The tone was more like a threat.
Jiang An suddenly felt nailed to the bed, not daring to move, afraid that she might inadvertently provoke the man’s heartstrings and truly pay the price.
After the storm, calmness was finally restored, and Jiang An was at last able to close her eyes, sinking into a deep sleep in the man’s warm embrace.
The deeply asleep Jiang An would perhaps never know, Dr. Gao held her all night without a wink of sleep.
The next day at dawn, the sky was fully lit.
When Jiang An opened her eyes, it was already nine o’clock. She panicked and almost jumped out of bed as she checked the time on her phone. She looked around and noticed Gao Chuan was not by her side, then rushed to the bathroom, nearly slamming into the washbasin, and in her haste, grabbed facial cleanser instead of toothpaste.
Just as she was on the verge of tears, Gao Chuan, wearing slippers, somehow appeared at the bathroom door. He stood there with his arms crossed, leaning against the doorframe, watching her near breakdown for quite some time before reminding her that today was the weekend.
Gao Chuan thought to himself that if he hadn’t timely reminded her, she might already be getting ready to head out.
Standing next to the washstand, Jiang An took a deep breath and looked up. In the mirror, she saw herself, disheveled, and the man in a loose, dark gray loungewear leaned against the doorframe, staring at her, a faraway look in his eyes.
Jiang An remembered the awkward moment in Dr. Gao’s room the night before, her face instantly flushing red like a bud of pomegranate ready to bloom.
After breakfast, Jiang An continued to hole up in the study, reorganizing a pile of documents on her hands. She was in a complete fluster over the latest surgery data when she suddenly discovered several notes added to a few pages on the desk which she hadn’t yet reviewed, and some experimental data from her paper had also been marked.
Jiang An’s eyes fell on the conspicuous pencil writing on the photocopy paper, and a sudden warmth surged to her heart.
———
Night fell.
Gao Chuan attended a meeting at Song Li’s company as invited. The man was in the middle of arranging a deal for the company’s latest batch of medical equipment. As it was a joint venture with Gao Chuan’s studio, he was also invited to help with the transaction.
After finally closing the contract deal, Song Li was dead drunk at the end of the drink fest. Gao Chuan dragged him to his car, intending to drive him home, with Song Li sitting in the passenger seat, stars swirling in his eyes.
Gao Chuan buckled him up and then took the driver’s seat and started the car. Song Li happily showed off his contract, "Look, I made it, didn’t I?"
As a partner, Gao Chuan naturally knew that Song Li had invested heavily in this batch of equipment, and it was precisely because of his determination that Gao Chuan decided to help him.
"You probably don’t know yet, but Song Xin is coming back after the New Year, and my peaceful days are coming to an end!" Song Li said with a red face, staring at the car roof, and heaved a helpless sigh.
Thinking about how his sister would probably give him a hard time when the time came, Song Li turned his head to see the still-calm Gao Chuan listening to him talk about Song Xin’s return, "I haven’t told her about your marriage yet. She’ll probably be upset for a while once she finds out."
"I always thought you could become my brother-in-law!" Song Li spoke hazily, with each word carrying a heavy scent of alcohol.
Gao Chuan, driving beside him, heard a hint of dejection in the man’s voice, tightened his grip on the steering wheel involuntarily, and said, expressionless, "You’re drunk, Song Xin and I— it’s not possible."
He regarded Song Li’s words as nothing but drunken babble.
After all, he and Song Xin were just ordinary friends, and for many years, it has been their families and friends who were eager to match them up, which he had always refused.
Most importantly, he was already married.
Such assumptions could no longer be allowed to exist.
"How is it not possible? When you two are together, everyone says you’re a match made in heaven. Have you forgotten? Back in school, my sister’s photo was even stuck next to yours! How come you suddenly got married? In what way is my sister not as good as Jiang An?" Song Li, looking dazed, blurted out his true thoughts.
His face flushed, he suddenly felt the car abruptly halt to a stop by the man next to him, his body lurching forward and his head spinning with dizziness.
